Do you suppose Barbra and her clone dogs have retreated to her secret bunker far underneath her mall?

I do believe it's time, once again for a little dose of Neil Simon: “When its 100 degrees in New York, it's 72 in Los Angeles. When its 30 degrees in New York, in Los Angeles it's still 72. However, there are 6 million interesting people in New York, and only 72 in Los Angeles.”

LA folks FREAK out in winter weather. They're the type who bring snow boots to Philadelphia in November "just in case". A snow flurry is spotted in a December trip to NYC? They run outside like Chattanooga hillbillies, sticking their tongues out to catch snowflakes instead of rimmable asses.

Between the fires and the hurricanes, the droughts and the earthquakes (always the clock is ticking for the Big One to happen), I don't know how anyone in Los Angeles sleeps at night. Especially those with children. I have one girlfriend who I asked this question to and she says most of the time she compartmentalizes her fears, but occasionally she will drop her children off at school and have a moment of sheer panic with the thought of "What if today is The Day for the Big One, and that was the last time I ever see my children?"

Yeah, R40, there was a HUGE tropical storm in LA last year, with flooding. I know because one of my best friend lives in LA and I was worried for her and her kids.
I'm far from dull, R41, and I have spend a lot of time in LA for two decades, as well as traveling all over the world both on tour and as an adventurer. If you must know, my hesitation about living in LA is a biproduct of aging rather than small-mindedness. I simply feel more skittish in my 50s about living in places with the potential for devastation and destruction. Such as the Northridge earthquake which destroyed my ex-husband's home in '94. Such as these massive fucking yearly fires. To wit, eight years ago I almost bought a home in Malibu, and the Woolsey Fire and this fire make me feel relieved that I made a different choice. I"m too old for this game of roulette.
I also grew up in Missouri where tornado watches, warnings and actual visible SIGHTINGS were a part of my childhood, every spring. When the TV show gets interrupted and the horrible loud emergency broadcast service beep shocks your nervous system. I'd be home alone after school (Gen X latch key) and it was always so terrifying. I once ran outside and saw a tornado in the distance, heading in the direction of me and my childhood country farmhouse. Very Wizard of Oz, surreal, panic-inducing. Then as I watched and prayed, the tornado change direction and disappeared into the distance. The sky turns this freaky mustard color, birds stop singing, it's really terrifying. So I made a choice as an adult to try to only live in places where tornadoes are rare.

R44. "Tropical Storm" Hilary was a joke. As a native of So Cal, the media once again hyped it up. It poured for 20 mins. The wind blew also. That was about it.

R44 a tropical storm is not a hurricane, and I was here for it and it was much less serious than had been forecasted. It was barely even windy.

At first glance I thought it said Maui was on fire again and I was so sad. I don't understand what's left to burn in Malibu. The little plants that grew again after the last fire ravaged? The landscape around Pepperdine still looked terribly burnt a couple years ago when I drove through.

It's a trade-off.
I absolutely am, to the depths of my soul, deeply bonded with Winter. It could care less about me, but I gladly endure its unrequited love.
I totally get it why most want not a thing to do with Winter.
It's dangerous. It's hard work. Your car can slide into an oncoming semi and you're dead from the sheer laws of physics.
But damn, for me that's all worth it for the pure serenity of seeing trees quietly shouting their stark, raw beauty because their every limb and branch are encased in white snow against a canvas of slate gray sky.
I'm sure Californians experience that same pure awe gazing at mountains or the Pacific Ocean's horizon.

Has Bobo Van Dyke been located? 😟
by Anonymous | reply 97 | December 12, 2024 3:12 AM |
Me, too, R92. I worry for our local mountain lion population in the Santa Monica Mountains, which is already under tremendous pressure. At least two mountain lions in the Santa Monica Mountains lion-study died as a direct result of the 2018 Woolsey Fire. P-74's tracking-collar failed the day after the fire broke out & moved into the canyons of his last known location (they never picked him up again on any of their trail cams, etc.). Another lion, female P-64, was found deceased & starved a couple weeks after the fire with burns on her paws. Her tracking collar indicated that she'd moved into the edge of developed neighborhood/area to avoid the active fire....but then went back into the smoldering "burn-scar" (to get the fuck away from human-development). 😢
ALL of the lions in the western Santa Monica Mountains (west of the 405) were affected by it in some way. A huge swath in the central portion was suddenly denuded, pushing the remaining lions on either side of the burn area further east & west in search of their preferred prey, deer. (And into conflict with other male lions & cars)
Anyway....I like to think of this big guy (now long-gone), just chillin' on a Malibu hillside on a beautiful (Super Bowl) Sunday afternoon.

R97/KittyDyke: My grandparents couldn't find their beloved cat when they had to evacuate their home during 1961 Bel Air Fire (he was indoor-outdoor as most cats were back then). When they left, they feared the house & sweet Sam were probably goners....but the fire stopped its southward march about 50 yards to the north of their house. And happily, Sam waiting for them by the front door when they returned! (and lived another10-12 years)
Also: remember the story of "Binks" -- that family cat that survived the Surfside condo collapse?? He kept hanging around the collapse-site during the first week of recovery until someone realized: "Ohhhhh...."
Cats will hang around! Hopefully, DVD's property wasn't totally engulfed flames & Bobo is around the there somewhere.
