Is "selling out" a real thing amongst artists (writers, filmmakers, actors, musicians, etc.)?

I'd say yes, but there's nuances. "Selling out" exists on a scale, imo.

These days, a lot of people have a "get that bag!" reaction when they see artists doing paycheck gigs. I'm somewhere in the middle.

If you make good product, you will attract attention and people will compete for you using money.

Artistic output ebbs and flows, but there is a demand for the old stuff. Perhaps, you have new material - they don’t want that; they want what they know. Give it to them and take the money.
