I know this is a very niche thread.
Which LA Neighborhood Would you want to live in?
by Anonymous | reply 75 | December 17, 2024 8:01 AM |
Los Feliz or Hancock Park.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | December 10, 2024 2:16 AM |
When I see Hancock Park in movies it looks good but not obscenely ostentatious. Is Echo Park like that?

Hancock Park is lovely, but I couldn't afford it.

Is Hancock Park where the bird streets are?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 10, 2024 2:24 AM |
R5 No. Those are in the Hollywood Hills.
Hancock Park is the neighborhood that has the Baby Jane house.

I miss WeHo, but wouldn’t go back. Much too noisy at my age now.

A rare treat in LA

No, those are above the Sunset Strip.

I think Echo Park is far funkier - HP is gorgeous, old-money mansions. Far less frou frou than Beverly Hills. Gracious.

Hancock Park has become rather Orthodox Jewish over the past few decades.
[quote]Hancock Park contains a community of Orthodox Jews. According to Teresa Watanabe of the Los Angeles Times, there are no clear figures, but in the early 21st century, The Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles estimated that Orthodox Jews made up 20% of the neighborhood's total population.[14] Hancock Park is home to nearly all subsections of Orthodox Judaism; of particular note is the large population of Chasidic Jews. The Chasidic Jewish population is growing at an above-average rate due to high birth rates within the community.[26] Orthodox Jews are required to be within walking distance to their synagogues, and Hancock Park is within walking distance to the La Brea Avenue–area synagogues. Teresa Watanabe stated some Orthodox families cited the large size of houses as a reason for moving there, others cited a better housing value compared to Beverly Hills, and other cited a proximity to the Yavneh Hebrew Academy. As of 2007, there were six Jews on the 16-member board of directors of the Hancock Park Homeowners Association.[14] As of 2007, the number of Orthodox Jews in Hancock Park is increasing. As of that year, there had been disputes between Orthodox Jews and their neighbors.[27] - Wikipedia

Hancock Park is beautiful. I’d prefer Los Feliz, if I had a choice.
I also love Eagle Rock, but prefer old money Glendale above Verdugo on Chevy Chase Drive, La Cańada, and even La Crescenta. Same goes with Pasadena. All beautiful areas/cities with homes that aren’t built anymore.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 10, 2024 2:51 AM |
Eagle Rock is very lesbian-friendly.

Beachwood Canyon or Hancock Park
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 10, 2024 3:12 AM |
I lived on Beachwood, R17. Many years ago, for around six months, before I got my own apartment. It was nice!

Santa Monica is not a "neighborhood." It's a completely separate city. (West Hollywood is, too, but it's smaller and surrounded by LA and Beverly Hills.)

Studio City

Santa Monica is not a neighborhood but there of what you listed.

Actually I take that back. Westwood.

What a stupid thread. How much money do we have? Can we live in Los Feliz north of Los Feliz Blvd or can we only afford to live south of it? Do we live north or south of Montana in Santa Monica?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | December 10, 2024 1:06 PM |
Some of your selections are not "neighborhoods" OP. They are independent cities.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | December 10, 2024 1:14 PM |
My neighborhood isn’t listed, though I do live adjacent to one that is.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | December 10, 2024 1:31 PM |
Y’all, don’t be so bitchy (haha) - just use your imagination and pick a neighborhood (or a city) and go from there.

Beverly Hills, PO

BHPO is not a great choice. Few of the benefits of BH, but many of the minuses of LA (shit police response, mansion tax)
by Anonymous | reply 39 | December 10, 2024 2:33 PM |
I lived in Eagle Rock for years. Now if I were to move back, I'd think Altadena would be high on the list. But I was always a fan of life on the east side, Pasadena, SGV, etc.

The heat and lower air quality are included at no additional charge! ^
by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 10, 2024 2:38 PM |
R40 - that makes me think of the drive straight up Lake Ave in Altadena . The view of the San Gabriel mountains is breathtaking.

Is Doheny the dividing line between WeHo and Beverly Hills PO?
by Anonymous | reply 44 | December 10, 2024 4:38 PM |
No. BHPO has nothing to do with Weho. It’s a part of the City of LA above Sunset and below Mulholland
by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 10, 2024 4:46 PM |
BHPO is on the other (western) side of Trousdale Estates.

r21, how does South Pasadena compare with Pasadena?
by Anonymous | reply 50 | December 11, 2024 3:02 AM |
It’s to the south, smaller and more homogeneous.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | December 11, 2024 3:04 AM |
No one said Downtown. Have we moved past the funky, exposed brick loft era?
by Anonymous | reply 52 | December 11, 2024 3:21 AM |
Laurel, Benedict or Topanga Canyons.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | December 11, 2024 3:27 AM |
What are we, chopped liver?
Coldwater, Franklin and Runyon.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | December 11, 2024 3:32 AM |
R52 Downtown is a fucking hellscape.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | December 11, 2024 3:45 AM |
I do like Runyon, R54.

I'm not mad at what's going on in Culver City. Hell, it even has an Erewhon.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | December 11, 2024 3:51 AM |
Crenshaw is pretty nice these days.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | December 11, 2024 3:55 AM |
Like R19 said, Santa Monica and West Hollywood are their own cities, not neighborhoods of LA. Same for Culver City and (though not listed in your poll) Beverly Hills.
Bel Air, Holmby Hills, and Pacific Palisades are LA neighborhoods, though. So are Watts and Crenshaw.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | December 11, 2024 4:07 AM |
Does it matter that they're independent cities and not neighborhoods? People feel like they're neighborhoods, and it's not hurting anybody. Why be so persnickety about something so trivial?
by Anonymous | reply 60 | December 11, 2024 4:14 AM |
Why don't you have Compton listed in the choices, OP?
by Anonymous | reply 61 | December 11, 2024 4:14 AM |
R60 because, as cities, they have their own neighborhoods. Neighborhoods are a distinct concept from cities. Pretty easy to understand.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | December 11, 2024 4:21 AM |
To add: no, people in LA don’t consider or view—much less “feel”—such cities as neighborhoods.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | December 11, 2024 4:23 AM |
I’m fine with any of them as long as it’s not that damn California!

by Anonymous | reply 65 | December 11, 2024 4:27 AM |
R60 It makes a difference because they are much bigger than most of the neighborhoods listed. It’s stupid to compare. Santa Monica is fairly big. Would you call Long Beach a neighborhood in LA. NO. It’s is own city in Los Angeles county.

West Hollywood is smaller than most of the areas listed R66, I think. I’d consider it a neighbourhood in LA, even if it is its own city. In the way I’d also consider Hollywood, or East Hollywood, neighbourhoods of LA.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | December 17, 2024 6:01 AM |
I live in Echo Park. Love it, except when the Dodgers are playing home games. Next stop: Atwater Village or Eagle Rock!
by Anonymous | reply 71 | December 17, 2024 6:21 AM |
R70 you’re typing like an idiot. Clearly you don’t know the city, the county, the state or anything else.

Does North of Montana count?
Or Spaulding Square?
Downtown is great - museums, bookstores, restaurants, amazing Art Deco/Baroque Revival/Modernism and the Bradbury Building - one of my favorite buildings in the world - but I wouldn't want to live there.
