Do you agree?

No.

All great films - the greatest, not exactly. I don't think any of them have a true female lead.

IMDb is mostly ruled by straight douchebros with dubious taste in movies. I mean: The Dark Knight at #3? Inception at #15? Forrest Gump at #11?! (Richard Widmark put it best when he called that schmaltzy piece of crap "a hymn to stupidity".)

by Anonymousreply 3December 9, 2024 1:37 AM

No, the blockbusters on that list have made a lot of money. But are they the greatest movies in history? Hardly.

by Anonymousreply 4December 9, 2024 1:39 AM

No. Stick to AFI's list, you'll be better for it.

The movies on the list vary from good to great.

I think the question is how are they defining "top" - we here at DL are experts on tops.

Should Seven be on the list over something like The Sixth Sense?

The Matrix was truly innovative, but the plot and story are a bit meh. Should it be on the list over Avatar for film making innovation or Blair Witch Project?

Each of the Lord of the Rings movies was good, but like the books, it was really one movie in three parts. Should each part really be on the list? Neither The Two Towers nor The Return of the King make sense or stand alone without the preceding movies.

What makes the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly better than The Magnificient Seven, or for that matter, the Seven Samurai?

Fight Club is the movie The Catcher in the Rye - the movie that young men all idolize even into adulthood. Is the twist really superior to Shutter Island or The Usual Suspects?

Dune is awful.

Where the fuck is Mannequin 2: On the Move?

by Anonymousreply 8December 9, 2024 1:49 AM

I did not enjoy Heath Ledger in his role as The Joker.

by Anonymousreply 9December 9, 2024 1:50 AM

No. Not at all.

by Anonymousreply 10December 9, 2024 1:53 AM

I'd swap Forrest Gump for The Departed.

by Anonymousreply 11December 9, 2024 2:05 AM

No. Bad list.

by Anonymousreply 12December 9, 2024 2:10 AM

The top 10 sucks. There are a few good ones in 10-20.

by Anonymousreply 13December 9, 2024 2:13 AM

I am also very surprised The Dark Knight is at #3. As much as I love that film, it has no business even being in the top 50 of all time.

by Anonymousreply 14December 9, 2024 2:25 AM

I saw 71 on the AFI list, and 12 on the original list.

And neither list contained my favorite movie of all time.

The AFI list is actually a very good representation of the all time best films made by those in the film industry. The IMDB is basically a popularity vote from the general public. Big difference.
