They’re 20% of the US population but I hardly see them on TV or in movies. What’s the deal?
Why are Hispanics so underrepresented?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | December 9, 2024 10:27 AM |
They vote for Trump and want to be white so, I guess any white person on tv could be them.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | December 9, 2024 1:18 AM |
They have their own entertainment networks like Univision and they prefer watching things in Spanish and not English. It's a cultural thing.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | December 9, 2024 4:26 AM |
I see them in a lot of stuff OP. I guess you should broaden what you watch. What do you watch?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | December 9, 2024 4:30 AM |
It's intersting that nearly all the Latinos you see on Spanish-language tv shows like telenovelas on the Spanish-language networks like Univision are all white Latinos of European ancestry. Many of them are so white they could pass for Anglo. You don't really see Mestizo/Black Latinos much.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 9, 2024 4:35 AM |
R4 Also because Latino is not a race sometimes white Latino actors will. just play a generic white character and Afro-Latinos will just play an AA. If it’s a genre film or a thriller the race of the character isn’t important. But I do see a lot of Latinos in film and television.

It's that fucking Spanglish accent.

Hi Teacake.
You’re using the “I Hate Gen X Troll” cadence tonight.
Make a couple adjustments to make this one unique.
Take care.

JFC r10 you don't run this board. FUCK OFF.
Back to the topic - How many Latinos go into show business? Like Asians, there's not a huge amount.
A friend of mine is a theater professor at a college that's well-known for its acting program and he's told me that it's white kids by a huge majority who audition for the program.

R2 is right - there are a lot of Spanish-speaking media - Univision, Telemundo and hundreds of radio stations and cable-based Spanish TV.
There's also the immigrant mentality - same with recent Asians - where becoming an actor or anything in the arts is deemed risky and not a stable choice.
The harsh reality is that many prominent TV and film actors are from upper middle class to upper class families. Look it up - it's amazing when you start looking into it.
There aren't a lot of successful actors who come from humble backgrounds anymore. Add in all the nepo kids and chances get even slimmer.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 9, 2024 6:10 AM |
Teacunt always stirring the race pot.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | December 9, 2024 6:14 AM |
Funny how so many classic Hollywood stars came from abject poverty - Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo, Clark Gable, Joan Crawford, the list goes on and on. That doesn't happen anymore. Like r14 said, if they're not nepo babies they're from very comfortable backgrounds.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 9, 2024 6:15 AM |
It's not about Latinos having their own TV and radio stations.
It's about being neglected when it comes to casting.
Just look at the commercials on TV. Why is 13 percent of the population so ridiculously overrepresented?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 9, 2024 6:16 AM |
R11, you really are not looking. They are very much into the arts. It's blacks who complain aboit everything and get over represented or someone will cry racist. When West Side Story came out, there were blacks complaining that HISPANIC movie had no black Americans. When blacks get a movie, they don't include others and find something to complain about anyway. They get loud and complain so that people feel guilty about nothing but bs.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | December 9, 2024 6:17 AM |
R16 - well the upper and middle class were much smaller then - most people were poor. The middle class only really took off in the 1950s-1980s - now we're seeing it revert back again.
I would even say some of the stars from the 80s and mid 90s had a chance and weren't from money. But cost of living and other factors have changed things.

Not anywhere near the level of whites. Go to any acting program at any university or The Actors Studio etc. and it's overwhelmingly white. Minorities just aren't as intersted in the acting profession as whites are.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 9, 2024 6:33 AM |
R20, 65% is why.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | December 9, 2024 6:35 AM |
R19 For one thing stars faded back then. Now minimally talented celebs can extend their shelf life and continue to generate money and clout making it possible for their children to get in the business.

I bet r11 is the OP and his whole intent was to stir up this wedge issue. Divide and conquer. Apologies if you aren’t r11 OP.

I meant r18 not r11.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 9, 2024 6:47 AM |
I gather OP isn't watching anything on the American broadcast television networks called Univsion, Telemundo, UniMás, Estrella ....
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 9, 2024 6:59 AM |
It’s not that they’re underrepresented. They often just don’t watch network television. If they’re not more than a couple generations in, it’s not as relatable. Especially in larger cities, you can watch more than one Spanish-language channel and even have news. I recall also seeing networks like Mun2 (Mundos) and they pushed Latin American artists over broadcast TV but I think that’s gone now.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 9, 2024 7:01 AM |
I see Hispanic representation often.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 9, 2024 7:10 AM |
I'd love to see a Latino twink network. Language is not important. I'd pay a pretty penny to stream it.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | December 9, 2024 7:17 AM |
R27 Me too. And I Have Amazon, Netflix, and peacock. Outside of telemundo I see them quite often. All the police procedurals on NBC. I see my fellow Latinos a lot.
