Why do daytime soaps tend to have so many gay male actors (most closeted unfortunately). And also ironically many right wing/republican actors??
Why do daytime soaps tend to have so many gay male actors

Hallmark movies also have ironically a lot of gay male leads. Given how conservative they are it is weird.

Because so many (good looking) Hollywood actors are gay?

Because, OP, so many actors, especially those living on the two Coasts, are gay.

r3 primetime and movies don't have as many gay male actors though-- closeted or out. Why are gay men more prevalent in daytime??
by Anonymous | reply 4 | December 8, 2024 7:10 PM |
r4 Because no one cares. The big movies and big prime-time stuff won't allow it as much.

I don't know that there are a whole lot of closeted actors now on the soaps....most of the gay ones are out on some level. With the disappearance of soap mags they can hide in plain sight.
In the old days there were more, for sure.

Move along. Nothing to see here

Even though soaps are far grittier and darker than they used to be in the 70s, 80s and 90s, they are still often more implied in terms of sex and romance versus being as explicit as prime time TV and movies can be.
So a gay male actor can convincingly be the well-dressed villain or "rake" and be taken seriously.

Pretty talentless himbos who are over compensating closeted MAGATS. Basically gay porn "stars" with more wardrobe & dialogue.

Straight men have better things to do than play dress up and pretend.

I want the demos of who is watching these shows.

Hmm, I'd contend that soaps were more willing to deal with dark and sensitive subject matter in the '70s. They became all glossy and shiny in the '80s, and rarely looked back.

r12 I agree. The soaps back in the 70s dealt with more social issues and just looked gritty. Everything looked gritty in the 70s. LOL. I finally watched scenes of the luke and laura romance-- and I finally get it. I now know why they were a super couple. Ignoring the rape-- it was just gritty and well written.

R12 Let me rephrase...
You're not wrong in that soaps in the 70s and early 80s dealt with gritty social issues.
But when I talk about today, from the 90s on, I think soaps lost the balance of family ties and romance. Most of them, especially GH and DAYS, have mobsters or villains winning all the time, murders all the time, in a way that wasn't quite as dark before.

Scratch the surface of an actor you'll find an actress.

R10 is Elonia and all her insecurity. They are pretending to be a Marlboro man with a bitt plug underneath their clothes.
