Casino (1995)
Does anyone else appreciate the film Casino? It gets unfairly compared to Goodfellas, despite being more of a tragic opera than a gangster film.
Written by Nicholas Pileggi (based on his book, "Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas), and directed by Martin Scorsese, the film follows Sam "Ace" Rothstein as he balances a casino empire, mafia bosses, and the slow breakdown of his relationships.
With Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone, Joe Pesci, James Woods, Alan King, Kevin Pollak, Dick Smothers, L.Q. Jones, Melissa Prophet, Frank Vincent, John Bloom, and Don RICKLES

I enjoy watching Casino, OP. Very well done and entertaining. What I appreciate most about the film is how well it captures the era of the 1970s, in great detail.

Loved James Woods in this. He was such a total slimeball and yet Ginger loved him.

I'm not much into gangster shows, even the sainted ones, but I really like Casino, partly because it is a portrait of a guy who is really, really good at his job (running the casino, not Mob duties). You don't often see that portrayed on film. And then he's brought down by his tragic flaw, in the shape of Sharon Stone.
I thought it was far more interesting than the demise of Michael Corleone, who never convinced me (or the Don) he wasn't a born thug. As for Goodfellas, I've tried twice but I can't make it to the hour-mark.
