Trump isn't President yet, but that hasn't stopped him from starting to act like he is

WASHINGTON — Foreign leaders have lined up to speak with him. He has rattled Mexico and Canada with threats of steep tariffs and warned there would be “hell to pay” for militants in Gaza unless they release the hostages by the time he’s sworn in.

That won't happen for another 45 days, but Donald Trump, the president-in-waiting, isn't shying away from acting like the president-in-reality.

Trump can't sign a bill or issue an executive order yet, but he is crowding out Joe Biden as the sitting president winds down his term and steadily recedes from public view. In two foreign trips since the election, Biden has answered all of two questions from reporters.

He has been left to kibitz about Trump’s pronouncements — “I hope he rethinks it,” he said of Trump’s plan to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico — rather than drive an agenda of his own.

As for Trump, “his view is that he’s not going to follow rules that he thinks are stupid rules,” said a former senior White House official in Trump’s first term. “His view is these are hostages and if he can help bring them home, then why would he follow protocol if it’s going to impact peoples’ lives?”

At this point, Trump is “already basically running things, and he’s not even president yet,” the person added.

Trump’s penchant for plunging into current affairs is testing the one-at-a-time dictum that presidents are supposed to honor but, for reasons of political expediency or practical necessity, usually don’t.

“He would probably argue, ‘I’m more than a private citizen at this point; I’m president-elect, and I’m going to have all the powers of the presidency in a couple of months.’ But that doesn’t mean you get to start before you’re inaugurated,” said Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif.

This weekend, Trump will join French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris for the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral five years after it was devastated by fire. Biden was invited but opted not to attend, a White House official said.

Trump’s return to the world stage after a four-year hiatus, coupled with news about his hires, has overshadowed Biden’s trip to sub-Saharan Africa this week, in which he faced fallout from the sweeping pardon he gave his son Hunter.

“Given the weakness of the current president and the speed at which things develop in the modern world, Trump is, in effect, a presumptive president,” said Newt Gingrich, a Republican former House speaker and a Trump ally. “Certainly, foreign governments are treating him that way.”

If Biden is unhappy about being upstaged, he hasn’t offered any hints. In fact, Trump’s interventions may prove helpful to the degree they complement Biden’s larger goals.

A senior Biden administration official cited Trump’s social media post warning of “hell to pay” unless the hostages are freed from Gaza by Inauguration Day. That message doesn’t hurt the Biden administration’s efforts to secure the hostages’ release in exchange for a ceasefire, the official said.

The minute I saw that Trump would be attending the ceremony, I thought the same thing as the headline of this article.

Trump is acting like he's President already, and world leaders are treating him like it.

Biden is completely impotent at this point.

He may as well resign already, and let Kamala be President for the next month.

Good point, R15. Never before has a former President drowned out an incumbent President's term the way Trump did to Biden. And it gets very little discussion in the press. There is no doubt Biden made mistakes, but he could never compete with the amount of media attention going to his predecessor.
For a Billionaire, Trump Flies a Crappy Plane The truth about his vintage Boeing 757.

If Donald Trump gets reelected in November, he’ll win a bonanza of benefits, including freedom from prison, the ability to jail Joe Biden, a $400,000 salary, and kinglike powers. He’ll also get a massive upgrade in the quality of his air travel, from his ’90s vintage 757 dubbed Trump Force One to the real Air Force One, a pair of heavily modified 747s worth billions.

To hear Trump tell it, that’s not much of an upgrade at all. He once told Rolling Stone that Air Force One is “a step down” from his 757 “in every way.”

But that’s pure delusion. Sure, Trump’s plane is big, and it has a shiny new paint job, but from a true private-jet aficionado’s point of view, those are about its only virtues. “It’s like if you wanted to brag about having a massive yacht, so you bought the Staten Island Ferry and converted it,” says a private-jet broker who prefers not to be identified. “That’s not something that people who really know yachts would find impressive.”

Trump Force One, you might say, is a poor man’s idea of a rich man’s plane — a big shiny bauble that behind the scenes is “a plane past its prime with decaying mechanics and exorbitant storage fees,” as CNN put it. Which raises the question: Why is a guy supposedly as rich as Trump is flying around in such a jalopy? According to Bloomberg, he’s worth $6.5 billion. People with this kind of wealth generally fly planes like the Gulfstream G650 or the Dassault Falcon 8X, the Porsches and Lamborghinis of the air. By comparison, Trump is flying a secondhand school bus.

It’s not really that complicated, though. To understand the crappiness of Trump’s plane, it helps to know a bit more about planes and Trump.

The former and maybe next president’s predilection for slapping his name on superannuated aircraft goes way back. In 1988, he paid $365 million for Eastern Air Shuttle, a division of Eastern Airlines that ran short hops between New York, Boston, and Washington, D.C., on a fleet of 17 obsolescent Boeing 727s. Renaming the operation Trump Shuttle, he tried to turn the bargain carrier into a luxury brand, with maple-veneer interiors and free in-flight telephone calls, but the venture defaulted on its debts in 1992 and was repossessed by the banks.

Five years later, Trump repurchased one of the 727s for his own personal use and had the interior redecorated in mahogany and silk. It was aboard this plane that his future wife Melania Knauss was photographed lounging in the nude for GQ. Trump kept the plane until 2010, when the earnings he received from The Apprentice allowed him to acquire a much larger plane, a Boeing 757.

While a video on Trump’s website called the plane a “luxurious new 757,” it was already decades old when Trump bought it, having first flown in 1991, the year “Marky” Mark Wahlberg released “Good Vibrations.” Already out of production for years by the time Trump bought his, the 757 is an aircraft of a different era. Unlike modern planes, which use computers to control flight surfaces on the wings and tail, the 757 used cables and pushrods.

During the first part of its life, N757AF (as it’s known by its tail number) was a workhorse flying for a couple of small discount airlines — Sterling Airlines in Denmark and TAESA Airlines in Mexico — that have since gone out of business. The plane was eventually bought by Microsoft billionaire Paul Allen, who turned around and sold it to Trump.

If he really did pay $100 million for the plane, as has been widely reported, he overpaid for it even more than he did for the Plaza Hotel. When it was new, Trump’s plane would have cost around $50 million, or $115 million in today’s dollars. But like most vehicles, a plane steadily decreases in value. Based on current used-aircraft listings, a 757-200 of Trump Force One vintage is today worth about $5 to $8 million.

Fox News host Jesse Watters discusses how Democrats are coping with their post-election loss as moans echo through Washington.

[italic]JESSE WATTERS: Biden left all his dance moves in Africa. He was back in D.C. to light the Christmas tree after his little safari. And let's just say he wasn't having a great hair day. Someone left his mousse on Air Force One. And while Trump was getting awards, Biden got named the worst president in modern history. This is a poll from the Daily Mail. Biden went from being on Mount Rushmore to being worse than Jimmy Carter. There's a lot that ails the big guy, but right now he's come down with a wicked case of senioritis. Trump's going to Notre Dame tomorrow. He's going to do the coin toss at the Army-Navy game next week and he's meeting with prime ministers. If Biden is unhappy about being upstaged, he hasn't offered any hints, is what people close to Biden are saying. The consensus in D.C. is that Trump is already basically running things. Trump even called Biden last week to wish him a happy Thanksgiving.

Hunter was getting a pardon the whole time. The only thing Biden wrestled with was how he was going to get it done once Kamala lost. They had a little deal that if Kamala won, she'd pardon Hunter so that Joe didn't have to. That would look more graceful and compassionate coming from her. And Biden wouldn't have that to go back on his word. But Trump won and made Biden pardon his son… Democrats are moaning all over Washington that Biden set us back tremendously. Mark Halperin told us last night, at this point, Biden will probably get a bookmobile instead of an actual library.[/italic]

You can't compare the two. The color blue is a normal standard color for a men's suit. And Trump's blue suit (nearly always paired with a red tie) is his signature outfit.

The American Flag RED WHITE AND BLUE actually have meaning dumbass, it's not a fashion statement.

Red: The color red represents hardiness and valor, as well as courage and readiness to sacrifice. It is also sometimes said to represent the blood shed by those who have fought to protect our freedom and our country.

Blue: The color blue signifies justice for all, as well as vigilance and perseverance. A reminder that we must remain watchful and strong.

White: The color white stands for purity and innocence. Pure, because we are independent from other countries and hold true to our ideals.

O.M.G., I LOOOOOVVVE FLOTUS Biden's shoes @R48!

by Anonymousreply 82December 9, 2024 2:26 PM
My jaw dropped open like it was on a hinge when he said that R78. Because it was just so brazen. So unbelievable.

The last time my jaw dropped over something Trump did was the "Grab 'em by the Pussy" Access Hollywood tape. After that, none of his actions surprise me.
And they're fairly young in comparison to the others. So...he's essentially shitted his fat-ass legacy into the soil of this country long after he croaks.

That's part of the reason why I thought it was important to vote blue. Enabling a power-hungry lunatic to nominate more extremist conservatives to the SCOTUS who will defend and do Trump's bidding is equally as bad as having him in office.

by Anonymousreply 83December 9, 2024 8:48 PM

The idiots who just voted for Trump just reminded me of the 70's when most of Americas was just and Broish, selfish and homophobic. That's what it was like, I thought maybe after 50 years America has moved slightly forward but I was wrong. This is America and will be for decades to come with the new SCOTUS to keep everyone in line.

I know their relationship is dead but it’s shocking Melania didn’t go to Norte Dame with him. Such a glamorous event and all she had to do was look good. We’ll probably see her inauguration week and then never again.

Winners getting ready to rule and the losers making plans to flee, kill them selves, or spend the next 4 years making silly posts making fun of the winners,

The life of those who no longer matter

by Anonymousreply 86December 10, 2024 10:45 AM

He is ridiculous

by Anonymousreply 87December 10, 2024 12:33 PM

Why are they sucking up to him so much??

by Anonymousreply 88December 10, 2024 12:54 PM

Could it be thay Biden and Trump have a deal for Trump to go about the business of president on the global stage while Biden stays vlose to home to deal with deomstic stuff? Afterall it is all for the benefit of US?

by Anonymousreply 89December 10, 2024 12:56 PM

R33 Macron invited Trump because he knows the large buffoon loves this type of adoration .

by Anonymousreply 90December 10, 2024 12:57 PM

the USA is still the big fish to be listened to and followed. Joe now sits in a corner eating pudding. Jill is now the wife of an old guy sitting in a corner eating pudding.

And no one on either side anywhere gives a shit about Harris

Smart people, those outside of DL , understand that you deal with strength and power not the pudding eating long past their prime old folks who are grieving their uncle eaten by natives during ww2..

by Anonymousreply 91December 10, 2024 1:05 PM

Butterscotch pudding?

by Anonymousreply 92December 10, 2024 5:59 PM

Pudding!

Love him or hate him, the fact that Trump got through impeachment, court case after court case, investigations, felony charges, two assassination attempts...and is now President again, means something to other world leaders, many of whom (like Macron) are hanging on by a thread.

by Anonymousreply 94December 10, 2024 7:14 PM

I just hope he dies before me because I want to watch.

by Anonymousreply 95December 10, 2024 7:41 PM

Ditto

by Anonymousreply 96December 10, 2024 7:42 PM

I think all his siblings are dead-he should be next. Martha too!

by Anonymousreply 97December 10, 2024 7:44 PM

The people spoke. They elected a convicted felon, a convicted rapist, a grifter, a lying crooked criminal. A sexist, homophobic, antisemitic pile of steaming horse shit. A Russian operative, a traitor who has already sold American Military Secrets.....this is who we are now. My opinion of him will never change and I will try my very best to survive his crushing destructive hateful tenure, although I'm not sure what will be left, nor that he will actually accept the peaceful transfer of power. This is the future we have chosen, we created him - hopefully at least we are contributing to more understanding and a future where America is for everyone and our taxes are used to make all of our lives better. Since the founding of our country there has been a civil war, in congress and spilling out in to the battlefield a few times.....maybe this is what we finally need to move on. I'm glad I'm close to the end of my life for sure, I just feel bad for the young people - I hope they get it together - but they have a tough fight ahead as their education is lacking.

by Anonymousreply 98December 10, 2024 11:23 PM

Trump's supporters won't be happy if he goes along with Musk's ideas to save money. Do away with food stamps and Medicaid.

by Anonymousreply 99December 10, 2024 11:26 PM

R98 I’m like you but young people are not. Todays youth are harsh and digital driven and most think like Trump and friends-even young gays. They are all one big harsh obtuse money-making collective.

r14, I watched the French TV coverage, and it pissed me off how much they were toadying up to him. But when he was in the cathedral sitting in the pews, no one wanted to sit next to him and were giving him the side eyes. At least my eyes were soothed by seeing Zelensky (who really didn't need to be there, but I understand he needs to curry favor).

by Anonymousreply 101December 11, 2024 2:39 AM

Great seeing Zelensky at Notre Dame but felt for him as he had to be photographed with dump-disgusting. If Macrons going to be mediator you can bet he’s going to demand Zelensky make all the concessions. ( D.Trump has wet dreams of fucking Macron- but then most of us do too)

by Anonymousreply 102December 11, 2024 3:06 AM

Bloomberg December 5, 2024 : "A majority of French people want Emmanuel Macron to resign and advance the presidential election scheduled for 2027 to next year..."

Macron's days are numbered.

NYTimes:

"France’s Marine Le Pen Takes Aim at the Top"

"After helping to oust the prime minister last week, the far-right leader has made clear her next target is President Emmanuel Macron."
"France’s Marine Le Pen Takes Aim at the Top"

This is exactly why I didn't want Trump to win.

It encourages right-wing psychopaths all over the world (and their followers).

by Anonymousreply 104December 11, 2024 5:56 AM

So the New York Times is now normalizing extreme right-wingers in other countries with articles playing them up. What's their endgame?

Hopefully the French are smarter than us politically and will not surrender their country and democracy to the whims of the far-right. Not to mention the added tragedy of losing that handsome piece of ass Macron for the homely and butch Marine Le Pen.

by Anonymousreply 105December 11, 2024 8:55 AM

Europe’s “far-right” is all about keeping the Muslims out.

by Anonymousreply 106December 11, 2024 11:59 AM

The international right wing shift will go on for years. Decades maybe.. Then it will in time shift back. Right now serious people are trying to figure out who to work with who is important Trump or anyone else in the dem party including the president.

And of course there is no one. Dems are about as important as the Greens today.

U of Michigan has a fight sing that explains this.
