Mike Johnson says he’s aiming to ax 75 percent of all federal agencies

House Speaker Mike Johnson intends to cut 75 percent of all federal agencies with the help of Elon Musk’s outside commission known as the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.

“We certainly hope” to slash the number of federal agencies from 428 to 99, as Musk has vowed, Johnson said in response to a question from Fox News host Martha McCallum in an interview Wednesday night. “We want to be willing partners in that,” he added.

He noted he aims to cut all funding for PBS and Planned Parenthood. “I would like to, that’s for sure,” said Johnson.

As for dismantling agencies, “We have the opportunity to go in and really take back control from the administrative state,” he said.

“For a long time they’ve been acting as judge, jury and executioner on the rules that they make on industries and small business owners and the rest,” he added. “We have the ingredients, we have the conditions right now to actually be ablemake really dramatic change.”

Johnson said dismantling the goverment will be part of “the playbook to unleash and unroll in January.”

Johnson added on X on Wednesday night: “Under President Trump, we will take a blowtorch to the administrative state and reduce the size and scope of government,”

He conceded in the Fox interview: “We got to build consensus to have the votes to do that. Where Congress is involved, that’s where it takes the hard work of legislating and getting everybody on the same page.”

But he emphasized that some of the work can be accomplished by executive order. President-elect Donald Trump “has a broad authority to do a lot of that,” he noted

Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, the entrepreneur and former GOP presidential candidate who will head up DOGE (the name of Musk’s bitcoin), are meeting with legislators on Capitol Hill on Thursday.

The two billionaires have been tasked with firing federal workers and cutting government programs and federal regulations. Republican Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is set to chair a new House Oversight subcommittee to oversee DOGE.

Attempts to slash the federal government have been resisted in the past as Americans grapple with cuts to programs they know and trust. Millions of Americans depend on these programs for jobs, health care, security, and other needs.

Trump has appointed people to his administration hellbent on slashing the size of the federal government, such as Russ Vought, the former and next head of the Office of Management and Budget.

In a Wall Street Journal op-ed published on November 20, Ramaswamy and Musk cited a key Supreme Court case mentioned by Johnson on Fox News that they view as authorization for the draconian cuts.

“In West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency (2022), the justices held that agencies can’t impose regulations dealing with major economic or policy questions unless Congress specifically authorizes them to do so,” they wrote.

“In Loper Bright v. Raimondo (2024), the court overturned the Chevron doctrine and held that federal courts should no longer defer to federal agencies’ interpretations of the law or their own rulemaking authority. Together, these cases suggest that a plethora of current federal regulations exceed the authority Congress has granted under the law,” the duo added.

[quote]House Speaker Mike Johnson intends to cut 75 percent of all federal agencies with the help of Elon Musk’s outside commission known as the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.

OP, there is zero chance of this happening. Republicans pull this same shit each time they win an election – and no, Trump's no different in this regard – with batshit ideas about closing major agencies. Remember Rick Perry's "oops" moment? That came at a Republican primary debate after he couldn't remember the third federal agency he'd announced he'd be "cutting."

If you insist on obsessing over unlikely possibilities, that's your call, but anyone who *actually* knows how government works knows that this isn't within the realm of the possible. (And yes, Mike Johnson sure as fuck knows that. He's just pandering to the MAGA crowd.)

by Anonymousreply 4December 6, 2024 5:40 PM

Start with the agencies that impact his district the most.

by Anonymousreply 5December 6, 2024 5:41 PM

PBS is a drop in the bucket. No talk of curbing the out of control military spending (except cutting off Ukraine aid because his boss Putin has ordered it).

by Anonymousreply 6December 6, 2024 5:41 PM

We can’t have the government protecting people! Billionaires have more billions to make. Your sickness or poverty is collateral damage. MAGA!

When is this guy's "adopted son" gonna come forward and dish the dirt?

[quote] OP, there is zero chance of this happening

Poor, R4.

Still living in the past, thinking that everything is going to be the same as it always was.

YOU are the one who is going to be in for a rude awakening.

Do you think that Donald Trump brought on Musk and Ramyswamy just for show?

Do you think that Musk and Ramyswamy just want their faces on camera, but they're not really going to do anything with DOGE?

Those two were specifically tasked with dismantling the Federal Government.

And they are the right ones (for Trump) to do it, because they relish in cutting "waste and spending.

Just look at what Musk has done to his own companies.

Between Trump, Musk, and Ramyswamy, this is going to happen.

Whether or not Mike Johnson is on board.

You wait and see.

Come back to this thread in about a year, R4.

So I can point at you and say I TOLD YOU SO, you fucking moron!

by Anonymousreply 9December 6, 2024 5:50 PM

Can we come back and call you names when the cuts aren’t as draconian as expected? Most government spending is for the military. Social security and Medicare. Commence the cutbacks of staff.

by Anonymousreply 10December 6, 2024 5:54 PM

The Republicans will eat themselves alive trying to protect their own pork. This will fall apart spectacularly.

by Anonymousreply 11December 6, 2024 5:55 PM

The only hope I have is Trump, Musk and Vivek have the three biggest egos on the planet and are doomed to crash into each other.

by Anonymousreply 12December 6, 2024 5:56 PM

Here's what you people are not getting.

Johnson and Republicans are POLITICIANS.

Trump, Musk, and Ramyswamy are CORPORATISTS.

As President, Trump will get his way. Not the career politicians.

Trump is DEAD SET on gutting the Federal Government. So is Musk. So is Ramyswamy.

They really don't give a shit what the career politicians want.

And these career politicians will soon find out that the businessmen will get their way.

by Anonymousreply 13December 6, 2024 5:59 PM

These men are sick greedheads. They worship Mammon, and I wouldn't bet against also Moloch.

by Anonymousreply 14December 6, 2024 6:00 PM

R11 - Yes, absolutely correct.

by Anonymousreply 15December 6, 2024 6:03 PM

Musk is one of those kinds of people that can run his mouth at 100mph, and when he's done, has said absolutely nothing. There is an interesting quote from some computer guy that said when he first heard him, he thought he was the most intelligent guy on the planet. And then some months later, with Musk talking abut a subject the computer guy was an expert on himself, the computer guy thought to himself, 'this guy is a complete fucking idiot'. So it's mostly bluster. Lots of executives make an entire career out of bluster, they have to, because it's all they have.

by Anonymousreply 16December 6, 2024 6:08 PM

This is going to be a "battle of wills."

But in the end Johnson, Thune, the House, and the Senate will all do as they are told by Trump.

Just like they have always done.

They pretend that they will stand up to Donald Trump, but in the end, NOT ONE Republican ever has.

Even the ones who have talked tough and even DENOUNCED Trump in the past.

They all did a 180 and started singing his praises, and jumped on board the Trump train.

Because they have no choice.

Wait and see. They will all fall in line behind Trump.

And the Federal Government will be slashed. You all don't believe it, but it's going to happen this time.

Republicans have NO BALLS when it comes to standing up to Trump.

by Anonymousreply 17December 6, 2024 6:09 PM

This will blow up in their faces.

by Anonymousreply 20December 6, 2024 6:29 PM

Trump is careful not to piss off his base. Cutting Medicare. Social Security and Veterans Affairs staff will piss them off if it affects services. He can cut PBS and other frills but that’s a tiny piece of the federal budget.

by Anonymousreply 21December 6, 2024 6:29 PM

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Lawmakers said they are "very impressed" with President-elect Trump's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) framework amid meetings on Capitol Hill with agency appointees Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy.

In November, Trump tapped Tesla CEO Musk and former presidential candidate Ramaswamy to co-lead DOGE under his administration — a new federal department that will aim to reduce government waste and slash costs.

Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa., chair of the Senate's DOGE Caucus, led a meeting with senators Thursday to unveil a 60-page cost-cutting proposal. Ramawasy was present at the meeting, while Musk simultaneously sat down with incoming Senate Majority Leader Sen. John Thune of South Dakota.

"I'm very impressed with what Elon and Vivek want to accomplish," Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., told Fox News Digital after leaving the DOGE Caucus meeting. "I can't talk about what they are going to be proposing, but I've known them for a long time, and I think they're going to do a great job."

While senators who attended the meeting would not reveal specifically where DOGE intends to cut costs, they all agreed that the conversation was productive.

"It showed a lot of us are on the same page," Sen. Ted Budd, R-N.C., said of Thursday's chat. "We need to make government serve people again."

Budd added that he believes Musk and Ramaswamy are "the right people for the moment" to cut government costs.

Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., said that DOGE is rolling out "hundreds of ideas" aimed towards achieving a "balanced budget."

"It was just a great conversation," Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., said after leaving the meeting.

Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., said, "We talked about a lot of things. This is the very beginning of a process that, if we do it right, will be ongoing. So right now, we are just talking about the art of the possible."

Tillis added that he believes Democrats will come on board with DOGE.

Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan of Alaska said his top priority in addressing costs is fixing "the regulatory burden and litigation abuse to do anything in America."

Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine also told reporters that it was a "good meeting."

During Thursday's DOGE caucus meeting, Ernst proposed the federal government relocate Washington’s workforce across the country, and for Congress to set a goal for all federal government agencies to achieve a 60% daily occupancy at their headquarters.

Ernst's report found that only 6% of workers currently report in-person on a full-time basis, with nearly one-third working remotely.

To anyone who is used to reorgs in corporations, you know changing and merging departments doesn’t necessarily mean any reduction in functions. The could be cases where there are functions split between 3 or 4 federal agencies that could be consolidated into one agency. Although restructuring will still be killing sacred cows to some masters of the fiefdoms, it will be easier than reducing government functions.

by Anonymousreply 23December 6, 2024 6:55 PM

[quote] He can cut PBS and other frills but that’s a tiny piece of the federal budget.

The tiny things are a test. If tiny things are impossible to cut, then certainly large things are even more out of reach. Cost cutters and people who want to reduce the size of government must first prove they can accomplish some small cuts.

I’m in Virginia. Northern VA will suffer the most. Can’t wait to see how the republican governor responds, and what will happen since he backed Hailey. Meanwhile, all the people who rely on social services in the rest of the state will get screwed as well. Terrific. I can only hope infighting between these clowns begins.

by Anonymousreply 28December 6, 2024 7:10 PM

He can "aiming to" all he wants. That's a far cry from accomplishing, which he won't.

by Anonymousreply 29December 6, 2024 7:12 PM

Keep in mind that the reich wing has been going after PBS for decades. Does anyone remember so-called moderate Mittens Romney in the 2012 debate saying he liked Big Bird but wanted to get rid of subsidies for PBS? Their game is nothing new.

As for the troll here saying Trump is all powerful, just we wait and see--life has ended. This sounds like the same troll that was certain that Trump was being paid to be a stalking horse for Nikki Haley. The comments have that same sense of superiority. What I'd say to this troll is: NONE OF US KNOWS WHAT TRUMP WILL DO UNTIL IT ACTUALLY HAPPENS, AND THAT INCLUDES YOU.

The deeply closeted fag Mike Johnson will do whatever his beloved Donald Trump tells him to do, otherwise Donnie won't let him lick his shit encrusted asshole.

They're only doing this because they want to eliminate any and all agencies that would prevent them from further looting the US Treasury. If they have unimpeded access, they can thoroughly loot the coffers and make off with the booty like the two-bit thieves they really are.

by Anonymousreply 32December 6, 2024 7:20 PM

They really want to eliminate Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid.

by Anonymousreply 33December 6, 2024 7:23 PM

Did Mike Johnson ever get a bank account?

by Anonymousreply 34December 6, 2024 7:24 PM

W was intent on privatizing Social Security. Didn’t even get a vote in Congress.

by Anonymousreply 35December 6, 2024 7:27 PM

Funny thing this dolt never thinks of if he gets rid of 75%of the Federal Government: there will be no one left in OPM to print out and sign his paychecks. There will be no one left in Human Resources that administer Insurance plans to make sure they get their insurance coverage for FREE. There will be no "little people" left in the Government- you know janitors and mantinance workers to clean their literal shit from bathrooms, to cleaning their offices, and fixing up dilapidated historic buildings. Where will the HVAC people be to make sure that Congress always is toasty warm and pleasantly cool. Who will be left to reimburse their outrageous expenditures refurbishing their offices with $10,000 dining suites.

Honestly these people have no practical administrative experience at all, and live in magical thinking where all their needs are fulfilled at the government's expense without the need of financial expenditure. They are about to find out.

by Anonymousreply 36December 6, 2024 7:35 PM

They want to get rid of most of the governmental agencies because they believe that will enable them to run wild with their crooked schemes and there will be no one to put a stop to them. Republicans hate oversight agencies.

by Anonymousreply 37December 6, 2024 7:48 PM

Listen, these cunts could end social security , Medicare, the VA and PBS but the brain dead cult will NEVER EVER EVER blame the thugs they voted for OR their orange messiah.

They NEVER will. It doesn’t matter what they see with their own eyes. They’re a brainwashed, brain dead cult and there is simply no reason, no logic and no reality outside of what their orange god tells them is true.

I wish I knew how to deprogram or break through to people like this, but I have no idea. I just know when THEY start to lose THEIR benefits, they will blame everyone BUT the people they voted for and continue to support.

That’s what a cult IS. A denial of facts and reality.

I am not r4 but you seem to have a lot of faith on this trio of clowns to effect change. It is one thing to convince a venture capitalist to give you money for a promising idea. They are doomed to fail.

by Anonymousreply 46December 6, 2024 8:25 PM

by Anonymousreply 50December 6, 2024 8:58 PM

We will have to disagree, r42.

I would love to believe you, but cults don’t function with logic or rational thought. Especially when they consume non stop propaganda telling them the thugs they voted for are “victims” and “forced” to make these cuts for “reasons”.

If logic and reason could reach these people, they wouldn’t be in this cult. We need to stop thinking these are rational people. They are not. They’re brainwashed cult members.

by Anonymousreply 71December 7, 2024 2:09 AM

Not well r70, but part of that was a rather clever strategy on the right of allowing abortion referenda to go forward. That in turn allowed white women, who generally vote Republican, to still vote Republican while carving out some abortion rights for themselves and their daughters. That did work, electorally.

In reality, it may not work out long term as Republican legislators scramble to find ways to ban abortion in reality even if they allow it in theory. And the fundamental fact remains: unless white women are personally affected in real world ways, they will continue to vote for people who want to ban abortion everywhere and for every reason, until it becomes absolutely obvious what that means in practice.

by Anonymousreply 88December 7, 2024 5:08 AM

A one seat majority until April. Someone strokes out and somebody else gets hit by a car in the next month. Then the Dems can pick the Speaker.

by Anonymousreply 89December 7, 2024 5:14 AM

Now would be a good time for some attention-seeking media whore to switch from Republican to Independent.

by Anonymousreply 90December 7, 2024 5:50 AM

I'm still available, r89!

by Anonymousreply 91December 7, 2024 7:58 AM

God I hadn't realized they'd only have a one seat majority till April. Interesting.

But the election gave them a five-seat majority so I'm a bit confused. The people Trump has picked who are Reps?

by Anonymousreply 92December 7, 2024 8:24 AM

Bible thumping-serial killer looking POS

by Anonymousreply 93December 7, 2024 9:08 AM

Last time, Trump tried to gut the Federal Government by not staffing positions.

The US Postal Service suffered greatly from this.

I think he also refused to fill a lot of judicial positions.

This time, he's going to do it more overtly.

By actually slashing positions.

by Anonymousreply 94December 7, 2024 11:40 AM

he is the wooooorst

by Anonymousreply 95December 7, 2024 12:11 PM

[quote] I think he also refused to fill a lot of judicial positions

Are you headless?

by Anonymousreply 96December 7, 2024 12:13 PM

Well at least we'll still have Fetterwoman.

by Anonymousreply 97December 7, 2024 1:28 PM

I mean, the MAGA House did nothing in the last two year session and they had like a 7 seat majority. They’re not going to do anything and then Johnson will lose the gavel in the mid-terms.

Thune in the Senate isn’t exactly going to roll over for Trump and reveal his pre-lubed butthole so, progress will be slow going.

And Trump doesn’t like to do any work, he just likes to make demands. He’s obviously already gotten what he wanted which was to stay out of jail. He’ll go along with what Heritage wants but he’s not going to roll up his sleeves to make it happen. Once he realises he can’t get vengeance via the DOJ (which just shows how stupid he is to think that the law actually works that way) or deport all the brown people, he’ll lose interest pretty quickly. I doubt we’ll even see him that much or they he’ll do much international travel.

by Anonymousreply 98December 7, 2024 1:45 PM

My mistake. Final count 220 R and 215 D. But 3 Rs are quitting. Will be replaced in April. So Repubs have 2 vote majority. However if there is a tie vote in the House, the measure fails. So one Republican can kill everything.

by Anonymousreply 99December 7, 2024 2:31 PM

[quote] I doubt we’ll even see him that much or they he’ll do much international travel.

Oh we'll see him, and hear him, a lot. He can't live without constant attention. You're right he doesn't want to do any real work, ever, but bellowing bullshit to roaring crowds isn't work to him. It's play.

Also I do believe that we will see mass deportations, at least the first year. They won't succeed in their grand vision of throwing every single migrant out, but they'll try and definitely start the process. I'm curious what happens then, as people see that, well shit, they really were doing jobs that people don't want to do, at least at the wage employers want to pay. What then? Not sure.

by Anonymousreply 100December 7, 2024 3:00 PM

From another thread, isn't like 70% of federal spending mandated? And to cut that it has to be approved by Congress, which it won't.

More bullshit from these assholes.

by Anonymousreply 101December 7, 2024 3:03 PM

[quote]But 3 Rs are quitting. Will be replaced in April.

Why in April? And why didn't these jokers just not run again in the first place?

by Anonymousreply 102December 7, 2024 3:26 PM

Gaetz quit and Trump took two.

by Anonymousreply 103December 7, 2024 4:12 PM

You mean you can't eliminate federal agencies by tweet?

Shut. Up.

by Anonymousreply 104December 7, 2024 7:16 PM

I see unemployment skyrocketing..

by Anonymousreply 105December 7, 2024 7:27 PM

R105 but then the line will be that "it's just leftist government drones" and magats will believe it.

by Anonymousreply 106December 7, 2024 7:35 PM

[quote]And Mike Johnson is a spectacular idiot.

And second in line for the presidency.

by Anonymousreply 107December 7, 2024 7:56 PM

[quote] So one Republican can kill everything.

Which will NEVER happen.

Republicans are in lock step. They never fall out of line.

Democrats are never in lock step, and they're always fucking each other over.

by Anonymousreply 108December 7, 2024 8:41 PM

Didn't we have Lisa Murkowski and ... Susan Collins? along with McCain to thwart the Rs' attempt to kill Obamacare?

by Anonymousreply 109December 7, 2024 8:45 PM

They're not 100% in lockstep always r108. One thing they have always wrestled with his getting the Freedom Caucus to do anything sensible on budgeting and debt ceilings, etc. Usually, they count on Democrats rescuing them and giving enough Republicans an out, to vote down any reasonable budgetary provisions. I really hope the Democrats don't do that this time around. Even if it means being irresponsible. Do NOT bail out Republicans on their bullshit. Do NOT work with Mike Johnson to make things go smoothly. Let Republicans figure it all out, and own it.

The one power Democrats currently have is the power to not go along, to not play the responsible role, to let Republicans drown in their bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 110December 7, 2024 9:46 PM

r110 but then they'll get blamed for the bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 111December 7, 2024 9:53 PM

I don't think so r111. In the case of government shutdowns and things like that, the party in the White House usually gets the most blame. And even more when they are clearly in charge of the entire government.

by Anonymousreply 112December 7, 2024 10:10 PM

Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too, will get old, and Mike Johnson is perennially hot.

by Anonymousreply 113December 7, 2024 10:14 PM

r112 That's the general logic, but does it still apply? With the vast right wing media apparatus constantly shitting out lies and endless obfuscation? People already think this was some kind of historic landslide win. They're uniquely primed now to believe that Democrats are obstructing the true will of the people as carried out by elected Republicans, and blame and punish them for it. 2026 will be the true tell of salvageability.

by Anonymousreply 114December 7, 2024 10:32 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think either PBS or Planned Parenthood are federal agencies?

by Anonymousreply 115December 7, 2024 11:56 PM

Mike Johnson looks like a middle-aged lesbian.

I hope he is experiencing the shakes wondering if some crazed MAGA voter (or House member) is gonna pull a UnitedHealthcare on him!

by Anonymousreply 116December 8, 2024 12:36 AM

All this because the dems just HAD to support trannies. Hope you’re all happy.

by Anonymousreply 117December 8, 2024 12:38 AM

As expected, the first action MAGA Mike will take is a tax cut for the rich

by Anonymousreply 118December 8, 2024 12:43 AM

[Quote] All this because the dems just HAD to support trannies. Hope you’re all happy.

Like Dems supported gays during the GWB election

by Anonymousreply 119December 8, 2024 12:44 AM

R119 They didn’t. That’s why this is all so infuriating. Dems wouldn’t support gay marriage back then but now they’re all on board with mentally ill wackos who want to mutilate themselves.

by Anonymousreply 120December 8, 2024 12:52 AM

[quote] Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think either PBS or Planned Parenthood are federal agencies?

No, but they are federally funded.

And if they lose that funding, they will essentially have to live off of donations.

Planned Parenthood might be able to do it, but there's no way PBS can survive.

by Anonymousreply 121December 8, 2024 2:27 AM

Maybe PBS could be saved if an agreement is made to have equal time between conservative POVs and liberal POVs.

by Anonymousreply 122December 8, 2024 2:30 AM

PBS is NOT a liberal mouthpiece.

If anything, PBS is more fair and impartial than any other news and media source out there today.

It's mind boggling why Republicans would hate PBS so much.

They don't bother anyone.

It's like picking on the quiet nerd who never talks to anyone.

by Anonymousreply 123December 8, 2024 2:36 AM

PBS has plenty of conservatives on the show R122.

PBS just seems like it's left leaning because you're used to watching Fox News where they just make up their news or only report parts of a story with no sourcing or basis in fact.

by Anonymousreply 124December 8, 2024 2:55 AM

Did you forget about the part where Americans voted for this and want it?

by Anonymousreply 125December 8, 2024 2:59 AM

Want what exactly R125?

by Anonymousreply 126December 8, 2024 3:05 AM

[quote] Want what exactly R125?

THEIR TWO FRONT TEETH, ROSE!

by Anonymousreply 127December 8, 2024 3:09 AM

[quote] Want what exactly [R125]?

Republicans and Trump henchman in power of all branches of government.

Did you sleep through the November elections?

by Anonymousreply 128December 8, 2024 3:15 AM

conservatives assume that anybody who isn't whoring for Trump 24/7 is the enemy. That's the extent of their interest in "fairness" in the media, and anywhere else really.

by Anonymousreply 129December 8, 2024 4:07 AM

[quote]If anything, PBS is more fair and impartial than any other news and media source out there today. It's mind boggling why Republicans would hate PBS so much.

Because it’s not completely beholden to lies and disinformation in support of Trump and MAGA. Therefore, it must go.

by Anonymousreply 130December 8, 2024 4:09 AM

[Quote] [R119] They didn’t. That’s why this is all so infuriating. Dems wouldn’t support gay marriage back then but now they’re all on board with mentally ill wackos who want to mutilate themselves.

try again . Dems hardly mentioned trans in the last election.

by Anonymousreply 131December 8, 2024 4:28 AM

Does this mean we can send 75% less to the federal government?

by Anonymousreply 132December 8, 2024 4:40 AM

[quote] Does this mean we can send 75% less to the federal government?

Yes, that's how you reduce debt. You pay less.

by Anonymousreply 133December 8, 2024 4:50 AM

You reduce debt by immediately seizing 100 billion dollars from Elmo. That's just math.

by Anonymousreply 134December 8, 2024 4:55 AM

Someone needs to report on this in a year, and let the American people know if Republicans were lying the whole time about this.
