For a while, MAD TV was better than SNL or any of its copycats. They said it was cancelled because of low ratings (couldn't prove it by me) and the fact it was an expensive show to produce. Too bad. They really had some brilliant characters and memorable moments. Post your faves here.

The Abercrombie guys.
And I agree with your assessment, OP: Mad TV was superior to Saturday Night Live in every way.

How did Debra Wilson not become a superstar? Her Whitney was the gold standard.

The early years were the best, period. It really lost the plot after a while.
This was so close to the real thing....flawless

I watched this with a guy friend and got so hard during this skit.....
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 6, 2024 2:58 AM |
The entire cast, esp. Debra Wilson, was memorable, real talents. It had a 14-year run (1995-2009), which isn't bad.

Fuuuuck MadTV demolished SNL on every level. The parodies were far superior (SNL’s strength), and the original content and characters were far superior. MadTV shits on SNL. Now, In Living Color also shit on SNL. SNL was never as biting as either of them. It saddens me that SNL, the only remaining one, can’t come close to even their own heyday much less MadTV or In Living Color. Not one sketch from current SNL comes close to any of these posted.

I’d have to find it but when the high school girl quotes dictators during her valedictory speech: “in the words of Benito Mussolini…”
And so forth.

Damn. I forgot how Madonna started latching on to all the teen pop stars to stay relevant.

It got stale in the later seasons but there were some gems, like Michael McDonald dressed Fu Manchu style.

I don't know how to post it, but there was one they did called Cassio Guy, or maybe I just called it that. Will Sasso was playing his Cassio along to 2 guys fighting. I remember cracking up at that. I haven't seen it in years.

There's no way most of the stuff they did could get on the air today. Meet Bambi

I loved Will Sasso. I wish he had a bigger career. He was hysterical on Mad TV.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | December 6, 2024 6:14 AM |
This made my jaw drop in the late 90s when I first saw it. Hilarious but shocking. Watching now with all we know about Britney it's really fascinating. Mad TV always through right through everything and could nail the reality
by Anonymous | reply 39 | December 6, 2024 6:26 AM |
What happened to humor, improv, standup? Now it's just Under-45s trying to be cool. They're not funny.

Mad TV was way funnier than SNL. Dirtier, less PC, etc. And the writing was generally better.
The Abercrombie skits are classic.
Miss Swan... classic. Would see huge backlash on social media today, but she had so many good ones, including a trip to a Monkey in the Bush bar. And then, not only did they give her a multi-part secret agent plot at one point, but Susan Sarandon played Swan!
Vancombe Lady... always funny. Would also see backlash today despite the fact that she's clearly not someone we are supposed to like. You can't even portray racist cunts as racist cunts these days. Oh well.

R56 OMG I love that skit. And especially when Ms. Swan appears.
Was watching it in a mixed bar (straight theater people and theater MARY!s) and the ROAR when Swan's segment came on still kinda gives me goosebumps.

Bryan Callen was a hot little furry stud.
I also was hot for Michael McDonald.....when he was dressed normally (which almost never happened on the show LOL)
by Anonymous | reply 71 | December 7, 2024 3:26 PM |
MADtv definitely had the hotter cast.
My personal favorite was Andrew Bowen, who only did one season in the late '90s.
I remember he specialized in doing Keanu Reeves and Brad Pitt.

Deborah Wilson was extremely talented. She’d win a Emmy if this were on today since they nominate far lessers from SNL. The show suffered when she left, and in the last years. I’m sure a lot of the best writers left. I forgot why she left, and as someone said, she should have had a bigger career.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | December 7, 2024 9:55 PM |

[quote] I forgot why she left
It had to do with pay. Towards the later seasons when she was on, Fox was planning to do major pay cuts to many of the veteran members of the show, and they lowballed her.
Thankfully, she has found great success doing voiceover work.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | December 7, 2024 11:22 PM |
It was worse than that, r81. She found out that new cast members were coming in and making a lot more than her so she asked for a raise - not even equal to what the new cast members were making but just an increase. They refused. Good for her for leaving but what a stupid decision by management.

I would love a good behind the scenes book about Mad TV. It sounds like the producers and network were horrible to work with so it's amazing they managed to put out such a funny show for so long.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | December 8, 2024 12:03 AM |
Watching the clips on here, what I’m reminded of is the level of acting (and writing) the show had. Just brilliant across the board. Current SNL isn’t even in the ballpark.

R6 He and Lorraine Swanson were absolutely hysterical. There was a brief period when Madtv was legit funnier than SNL. But sometimes they would go too overboard with their sketches and drag them out too long.
