Princess Anne: Cheap, timeless, or does she just want to show off her youthful figure?
She's known for recycling outfits from years past, but this time she's really outdone herself by wearing a nearly 40 year old gown to the State Banquet for the Emir of Qatar. She probably only had to have it taken out a bit on the sides, if at all.
What surprises me is that it's a totally suitable look for a 75 year old. Was it considered frumpy back in 1985?
It's not the gown in the preview window which looks very girlish for Anne.

Cheap, cheap, cheap, but I respect that.

I love this photo. I think the TV and possibly the dog bed are the youngest things in that room.

I think it's great. More people in the public eye should do this to emphasize one needn't be constantly having to buy new clothes just because they've been worn to an event already (and possibly have been photographed wearing it).
Also, every "normal" person has favorite wardrobe items, and we wear and re-wear them often. Why should she be any different? I like the outfit (not the one at OP, the real one within the article) and thinks she looks really good in it.

An online wag (one of The Fug Girls back when they used to cover BRF fashion) said that nearly every time she sees a photo of Princess Anne it looks like Anne is a private detective spotting clues in a juicy murder investigation (OP's photo is a good example). I would watch the *shit* out of Princess Anne: Private Dick, secretly solving murders at summer garden parties and state banquets.

That's Anne for you. She can rewear over the decades because a) she has retained her figure, b) despite her sometimes dire fashion sense her clothes are of the highest quality and have been well maintained and c) she doesn't seem to care what other peoples' opinions of her style are anyway.
As far as being "on the public tit", R2 - she is not on the Sovereign Grant but like the few other working royals she is reimbursed for expenses by the monarchwhen representing the monarch, which she does more than any of the family, otherwise apart from a grace and favour flat in St James's Palace for when she has to stay overnight in London, she's entirely self-supporting, no doubt helped by trust funds from the private fortunes of her mother and grandmother. Gatcombe Park belongs to her - a wedding gift from her parents - but it's a working farm. It must be self sufficient otherwise it goes. I imagine that she runs a pretty tight ship in that regard.
So criticise her hairstyle and fashion all of you like but I doubt she'd lose any sleep over it.

The 1980s were flashy but there were many instances of frump. Even Lady Di experienced frump during the 80s.

You forgot the real answer among your options: SMART.
She's well aware of the anti-royal sentiments. She's aware that people will criticize royal spending.
I'm betting she's been strategically pulling out these clothes to enhance the reputation for being "thrifty" and create the impression that not all the royals are idiots like the Harkles.

Prince Phillip was also known to be frugal, in particular, with his clothing. I think Anne is just that way. I don't think she's trying to make a statement.

Good for her.
I saw a clip of her doing some royal duty (it looked like a knighting, but I could be mistaken) and she was quite impressive.
Knew exactly what she was doing, where her “assistants” were and when. No wasted motion, no fumbling and no mistakes. You could tell the assistants helping her were right in synch.
(I don’t know what those guys are called - I’m sure there’s a proper term like footmen or something. One held the sword and the other held the “award” ).

They are called equerries, R18. Very handy to have around - Anne's current husband Admiral Tim Lawrence was an equerry to Queen Elizabeth II.

It's an appropriate gown for her and the occasion. I don't think she is way up mid-east royalty asscracks like her brother the King is. So it shows the limited gravitas she's willing to lend.

Dear, innocent r17z
They are both trying to make a statement.
Notice how Prince Phil carefully let us all know he had his 50-year-old trousers tailored? Both to advertise of his frugality and his trim waistline.
Anne is no different.

Anne is definitely one of the 'better' royals. Yes, she's lived a privileged life, but it's not as though she could influence the circumstances of her birth, so I can't hold that against her.
As others have pointed out, she's the hardest working royal; doing the most engagements each year. Pretty much anyone who's been at those engagements says she's always interested in what's going on and has a good chat with all the people there. I think if she was difficult or demanding at said engagements, we'd have heard a few stories by now.
No one could say she lives 'frugally' (after all, she has a large mansion), but many sources say that she doesn't like much fuss and generally only uses a handful of rooms regularly - with old furniture, etc. I understand she doesn't like replacing things unless they're broken, hence has a an old TV, etc. She certainly doesn't seem like a spendthrift anyway. I'm not suggesting we should heap praise on her for this, but - let's face it - she could spend more than she seems to.

A horse in a forty year old gown. The jokes write themselves. I don't admire her for rewearing. I bet that dress cost a cool thousand forty years ago. Give a lump of sugar and get on with it.

Thanks, r19. I will try to remember that.
Those equerries seemed to be relaxed around her. Like they knew she knew what she was doing so they didn’t have to anticipate her gaffes.
Just that little bit I watched made me respect her. She takes being a Royal and her duties very seriously.

Do royals get designer swag like celebs do? Outfitting Princess Anne would be a pretty good return on investment over decades of rewearing clothes.
But it should be considered normal. I'm wearing a sweater I've had at least 20 years. I only get to wear it about three months out of the year and I usually wear it at least once a week. I love it.

[quote]When asked why she chooses to recycle outfits the Princess told Vanity Fair in 2020: "Because I'm quite mean."
There you have it.
[quote]She added: "I still try to buy materials and have them made up because I just think that's more fun. It also helps to support those who still manufacture in this country. We mustn't forget we've got those skills, and there are still places that do a fantastic job."
This is also admirable.

No, R36 the Royals have a policy of not taking free swag. They pay for things. They support brands, they don't leech. Also, in this way, they cannot be bribed. This is one of the things that Megan Markle was tantruming about. She was asking for freebies from everyone in London, and she was not allowed to keep any of it. It made her livid. In Hollywood, thems are the coveted perks. Royals, not so much.

I've been waiting for someone to notice this. Even in this recent state dinner video you can see she's not missing anything, even though at times she looks like she wants to plant her face in the soup she's so bored.

She's even said she wants to preserve handmaking clothing throughout the region so it's not forgotten. And that she uses tailors, etc. She wants to preserve local talent.
I can't fault her for that all. I admire that.
