In case you missed it, on Tuesday night, Matty became embroiled in a brutal X fight with Azealia Banks, which culminated with him threatening to “slap” her “so hard” that he will get a Guinness World Record after she insulted his fiancée Gabbriette.
For reference, the tweets came from the now-deactivated X account, which appeared to be Matty’s personal account as it went by his alias Truman Black.
And it all started when Azealia tweeted an old clip of Charli and insulted her appearance, with Matty quote-tweeting her and writing: “Azealia you seem to have a blind spot when it comes to your ‘reads’. All the women you attack seem to be culturally relevant, attractive, and NICE people. I think this makes you jealous cos you’re so talented but everything else about you is a failure. Just rap bro.”
He then referenced Gabbriette, who he got engaged to earlier this year, writing: “And on that point if I see one little shit bag twitter barista say ONE thing about my Gabi, EVER, I will use my mental illness to full affect and I will dox and fuck you up I’m so over pretending to have different standards online cos it’s ’not real’. Well, a fuckin slap is.”
But when Azealia retaliated by saying: "The bitch look like Frankenstein to me. You both look like you share needles," Matty tweeted: “I know you think your life is some episode of the library is open but I am not the one. Talk to me like that I’m not gonna side eye you at an awards do I’ll fucking slap you so hard I’ll get a Guinness world record for the highest a rat some bitch calls a wig has ever flown.”
Almost immediately afterward, the singer started to backtrack. He tweeted: “Nah I can’t be saying I’m gonna hit a girl that’s insane I’m sorry. You just can’t keep being so mean about my mates and my mrs it’s really hurtful gets me well defensive.”
“I was just trying to match your vibe im scared now im sorry bro, i was just sticking up for my mates. Im not tough lol.”
The whole thing left social media users totally stunned, and one of Matty’s fans reposted his first tweet defending Charli as they called him out for always taking things too far.
They wrote: “this is literally what I was talking about when I said how annoying it is that matty Healy is often correct about things. Like he really gets on my nerves as a person but every so often he comes out and says something that I just… completely agree with. and it PISSES ME OFF.”
Matty then surprised this follower by asking them for some constructive criticism. He replied: “I see this a lot and I’m genuinely curious if you would mind expanding on what you mean. Like obvs yes I made a tasteless porn joke on my mates podcast and I have done some things I would take back, like we all have. I’m just trying to keep learning. Could you give example?”
“Please just be yourself. I get that it was all for performance art but it went too far that it was genuinely confusing for alot of us & pissed off alot of us black 1975 fans that have been here since the beginning we love you & just wanna see u win.”
“Yeah I understand that,” Matty replied. “I was really inspired by the essay ‘Dirtbag’ at the time and found NY very interesting. I’m not gonna say Adam and Nick aren’t my friends tho cos they are and I love them a lot. No excuses. I can’t just stop taking my meds when I choose. I’ve learned that.”
And as Azealia tweeted that she plans to sue Matty for his violent threat against her, Matty opted to deactivate his X account, writing: “Guys I don’t have the right kind of intelligence / emotional maturity etc for social media I literally just end up saying stuff that immediately regret etc. I’m actually just gonna stick to music cos I’m good at that. Having manic episodes on twitter at 35 is kinda pathetic.”
He then reflected on the entire situation in a post to his fans on the official Reddit forum for his band, The 1975. A message from Matty's verified account reads: “What a bad day, I really let myself down. I have worked so hard to move past these impulsive self destructive and honestly quite volatile outbursts I have."
