Cops Close in on Grinning Suspect in UnitedHealthcare CEO’s Murder as They Search Hostel
Police appeared to be closing on the identity of the assassin who gunned down the UnitedHealthcare CEO in midtown Manhattan Thursday as they released a photo of the grinning suspect and searched a hostel where he was believed to have stayed.
The photos, shared by the NYPD on X, show the “person of interest,” who is wearing the same outfit as in earlier photos of the shooter, with his face mask down.
Police on Wednesday searched the HI NYC Hostel on 103rd and Amsterdam Avenue, where the suspected killer is believed to have stayed in a room with two other men, according to CNN.
Matheus Taranto, who was staying at the hostel while visiting from Brazil, told the Daily Beast that police swept through the building around 5 or 6 p.m. and seemed particularly interested in room 407, which remained locked Thursday.
“I was going to the bathroom, and [a police officer] was like, No, you can’t pass here,” Taranto said.
Although sources told CNN that the suspect largely wore a mask while he was at the Upper West Side hostel, police were able to obtain one image of the man from his stay in which his face is visible.
The NYPD declined to comment on the hostel search.
The latest developments in the race to apprehend the killer, who stalked Thompson outside his hotel before firing several shots at close range, comes as law enforcement is closing in on the suspect’s identity, police sources told ABC News.
Investigators have several possible suspect names, but they were inconclusive when compared to the surveillance image released Thursday, a law enforcement official told the New York Times.
Thompson was in the city for an investor conference for his company, one of the largest healthcare providers in America.
After using a silenced weapon to gun the executive down in what city police commissioner Jessica Tisch called a “premeditated, pre-planned, targeted attack,” the killer fled on an electric bike, kicking off a sprawling manhunt.
While the killer’s motive remains unknown, the investigation has so far turned up a number of clues.
The police found bullet casings at the scene with the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” engraved on them, ABC News reported Wednesday night.

I believe the NYPD already have an ID on him. Now, they’re processing more evidence smoke him out.
We will soon know who is the man is, and we might also get a background on the motive.
It’s interesting that Anthem Blue Cross have now retracted the announcement of not paying out for anesthesia. If this if this was a societal statement execution, it’s very possible that they too, have received threatening letters from the same executioner. I predict they’ll move forward with the morally corrupt anesthesia scheme soon after the dust settles.

This movie ("L&O"?) will be awesome! A moral conundrum: call it "The Victim." But WHO is the real victim?
Scenes of illness, denial of coverage, despair, death, legal challenges, more despair. A troubled marriage of a schlemiel insurance executive. Anger, sorrow, indifference, threats, fear, death. The solicitation of a hitman. Who really answers that Dark Web "Want Ad"? Or is there no hired killer, but a grieving son who watched his mother die and now, at last, can smile? The escape to the electric bike and through Central Park, eluding New York's Finest? Maybe a flight headed for Rio? Are there two different hoodie-wearing young men?
Starring.....Timothee Chalamet and Paul Giamatti.

DNA test results could be mere days away in evidence connected to the shooter who gunned down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, The Post has learned.
The DNA samples being processed were taken from a water bottle believed to have been dropped by the masked gunman as he fled from shooting Thompson outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown, as well as bullets from the scene, sources said.
A Starbucks coffee cup that the shooter potentially used is also being processed for DNA evidence, according to sources.

by Anonymous | reply 143 | December 6, 2024 6:50 PM |
He shoulda disguised himself for the event. A wig, a fake nose, something. He could have also faked being lame at the Hostel. Use a cane or something.
I hope he left the country. And honestly, if they know his trip originated in Atlanta then they will probably know his name soon if they don't already. IMO you'd see an older guy with a cane and a limp getting on a bus in ATL, arriving in NYC and going to a hostel. He ditches the cane, shoots the guy, then runs for it. He gets rid of his disguise in Central Park, and changes his shoes and jacket and puts on a baseball cap, and strolls away. Hails a cab goes to the airport international terminal, and he is outa here.

Why would the wife want him killed? To end her gravy train? Collect the life insurance? 'Cause no cop has ever figured that one out.
I can see the possibilities of it being an aggrieved coworker or someone the chubby CEO rhetorically fucked, but premeditated murder like this usually requires significant motivation, so the list of people of interest in this regard is short (well, shorter than the list of people who'd been impacted by insurance coverage denial).
Here's an idea: maybe the killer wasn't the surviving spouse, sibling or parent lost to UHC's greed, but was [italic]hired[/italic] by the spouse, sibling or parent of the dead insured, and wanted to make sure that the message came through loud and clear hence the engraved bullet casings. Moreover, isn't engraving bullet casings something that requires specialized machinery and skill? I know if I tried to engrave a bullet, it'd end up going off in my face. And if I took the bullets to my local engraver...

I keep seeing a minor bit of misinformation in this thread. The bus trip did originate in Atlanta but at this time the police don’t know when or where the shooter boarded the bus. He may or may not have boarded in Atlanta, and if he didn’t then he could have gotten on at any stop between there and NYC.
It would seem that as all pervasive as all that video surveillance is, there weren’t enough cameras to see where his trip originated.

by Anonymous | reply 179 | December 6, 2024 11:39 PM |
New York police officers on Friday found a backpack in Central Park that they believe was carried by the man who fatally shot the UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson, according to two law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation.
Crime scene technicians photographed and collected evidence in the undergrowth late Friday afternoon as they searched for the distinctive bag the gunman had worn early Wednesday morning. They were also searching for the weapon he used: a pistol that appeared to be fitted with a silencer.
One official said that the contents of the backpack for now remain unknown, and it would be taken directly to a crime lab.
The technicians entered a wooded area in the southern end of the park to photograph and collect evidence, including what appeared to be clothing and a heavy object, placing them into bags as street lamps and Christmas lights flickered on throughout the park.
It was unclear if the items were connected to the gunman, but the location was along what might have been a potential escape route as he cycled through Central Park after the shooting early Wednesday morning.
The site was near the 65th Street transverse bridge, a pedestrian and biker walkway on Center Drive. As the sun set and temperatures dipped below freezing late Friday afternoon, nearly two dozen officers gathered around the Chess & Checkers House Visitor Center, sipping coffee while guarding an area of undergrowth off the walking path.
Tourists and park visitors passed by as officers searched trash cans, grates, storm drains and leaf piles near the beach volleyball courts and visitor center. The officers worked with park employees to inspect locked storage containers.
by Anonymous | reply 180 | December 6, 2024 11:48 PM |
SO you hide an empty duffle bag in the park. Army green. Maybe a camo pattern. You transfer contents from backpack to duffle, then set the backpack on fire or you pour Clorox bleach all over the interior of the backpack. Destroying any trace evidence. You are now wearing different clothes, carrying a duffle bag and look nothing like the shooter.
Joseph Kenny, the chief detective, said that investigators are looking into the possibility that the gunman used what’s known as a veterinary gun, a larger firearm used on farms and ranches. “If an animal has to get put down, the animal can be shot without” the weapon causing a large noise, Kenny said.

Russian military intelligence is carrying out a range of activities to destabilise Ukrainian ally countries. Yesterday there was an explosion at an apartment building near The Hague. There have been explosions of DHL packages in Germany and the UK in recent weeks. Assassinations of Putin's opponents are common in Russia, and there were the two attempts on Trump. This hit may have been essentially firing a warning shot at other senior executives. It may have little to do with healthcare and nothing to do with some insurance greviance.

Possible cause here. A United Health subsidiary was victim of a major ransom ware attack in March. Was the hit payback for a refusal to pay ransom?
the suspected ransomware attack on Change Healthcare, a unit of insurance giant UnitedHealth Group's Optum division, "the most significant and consequential incident of its kind against the U.S. health care system in history." While doctors' practices, hospital systems, and pharmacies struggle to find workarounds, the attack is exposing the health system's broad vulnerability to hackers, as well as shortcomings in the Biden administration's response.
Health care leaders including state Medicaid directors have called on the Biden administration to treat the Change attack similarly to the pandemic — a threat to the health system so severe that it demands extraordinary flexibility on the part of government insurance programs and regulators.
Beyond the money matters — critical as they are — providers and others say they lack basic information about the attack. UnitedHealth Group and the American Hospital Association have held calls and published releases about the incident; nevertheless, many still feel they're in the dark.

Americans think dark eyebrows = swarthy = ethic = college roomate's hairy Armenian-American sister.
He looks very American to me. The only thing that gives any pause is his clothing which could pass unnoticed on a street in Europe. The Tommy HIlfiger brand jacket found in the dumped backpack is an interesting choice in that it's a downscale brand in the US but enjoys more brand respect in Europe. But grey is much more an American taste than black or color in Europe.
But his clothing choices were possibly chosen for his mission, to look presentable enough not to look suspiciously out of place, yet anonymous enough not to attract attention. The grey hooded jacket, the (possibly) 2016-2019 model Peak Design grey backpack and the grey clothing all were good conscious choices to fiut in without drawing attention. Knowing he would be caught on camera, he must have been smart enough to consider his clothes, picking similar but not identical things )similar grey jackets but with different numebrs of pockets and small details) to cast doubt that the person in one phot matched that in another, the ability to ditch a jacket that may have have powder residue from the shooting, etc... Even in picking throwaway clothes, you can see some aesthetic choices, conscious or not.

It seems pretty clear now that while our hot suspect is impressively cold-blooded, he's not a 'professional' in the sense that this is his living. Somebody in all the churn said the wife is part Columbian? Those gals are hardcore. It appears she's okay financially but if he dies now she gets everything and is free to remarry without losing alimony. Flirty assassin could be a relative or boyfriend. The bullet inscriptions were a decoy. The first thing out of the wife's mouth was he was getting threats, 'something about coverage'. Another diversion? I wonder what he intended to do with the Monopoly money. He didn’t appear to be rattled after Thompson was on the ground. He trotted across the street at a pace no different than anybody would who was out and about on a chilly morning. It’d have been so poetic to have sprinkled it around the body — but that could alienate a jury that would prefer to see a broken heart as his motive, rather than viewing him as a killer making a morbid joke or accusation.
If leaving it in the bag and letting people come to their own conclusions was the whole point — okay, but I’d like him to tell me about it as I drive him to my family’s cabin where he can rest up while letting the heat die down.
Do people not realize a wife gets alimony only when she's divorced?
Not alimony as such, but it would be crazy to assume (unless her salary were in the same neighborhood of $10.6M/year) that she wasn't receiving regular support money from the estranged husband. Nor can she collect alimont from a dead man, but he did die married to her still which comes with considerable and difficult to challenge financial benefits, inlcuding what is likely to be a hefty life insurance settlement.
She lived in the house that they had previously occupied together, so it's likely that that was still joint property, and it seems likely that she received regular payments as an estranged (not divorced) wife.
Her situation was effectively at the whim of her husband as the house would not likely be only in her name, nor any support she received the subject of legal contracts that would remain in effect upon his death. Unless her salary were somewhere approaching a similar level as his, her fortune was somewhat at his whim without a divorce settlement to establish the terms.

R370 Maybe it's me, maybe it's the effects of the separation, maybe it's that her emotion doesn't come through in a news report quoting her, but nothing I've read (that the wife supposedly said) made me think she's THAT upset about things.
Whether or not she thought he had it coming (mistress, fights over money, etc.) she was not wailing and rending her garments. The quotes were more like, "Yeah, I think he was getting some threats" and she just didn't sound like those threats bothered her (or him) that much.
And the wife said she didn't know anything about his death until a relative (sister?) e-mailed her the story. She didn't bother to call?
I'm not saying she's guilty, but publicly, anyway, she seems less interested in his death than most of America.

by Anonymous | reply 405 | December 8, 2024 7:28 PM |
Welp. So far the cops do not have the gun. The weapon used in the shooting. They do not have the bike and there is doubt that it was in fact an electric bike even though CNN keeps saying it was. They believe the bus he was on came from Atlanta, but do not know whether his personal trip originated in Atlanta. They have some photos they claim are of the shooter but everything from his bone structure (nose) to his eyes and brow is being disputed. Height too. They were not able to get the DNA they hoped for from the "evidence" he left behind and the single partial fingerprint on the bottle is smudged. They're hoping the public will claim him and name him because of the reward. My opinion? He is not an American. He was hired. The inscriptions on the bullet casings now seem to me to be a feint. I'm beginning to consider the wife even though at first I didn't. If not the wife someone who really wanted him dead. So if I'm working this case, I ask the question, "Cui bono?" Who benefits. That is my starting point. And I'd be going over his life with a microscope. Because the biggest piece of evidence is him, the d ead CEO.

A man is being held for questioning in connection with the killing of a health insurance executive last week, according to three law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation.
The man was identified based on a tip from someone who spotted him in a McDonald’s restaurant, one of the officials said, and is being held in Altoona, Pa. One of the law enforcement officials said that the man had a gun, a silencer and false identification cards similar to those they believe the killer used in New York.
New York police investigators were on their way to Altoona, about 280 miles from the city, according to one of the other law enforcement officials.

Not everyone was convinced, but I don't think many of us thought he was an upper-middle class, US-born Ivy grad. That would be the last demo I'd put him in.

No one had elite expensive private prep school coupled with Ivy League as a first choice for hit man.
Although the Jackal s CV might come somewhat close if we had any idea who the jackal was..

Mayor Roberts said a McDonalds employee (not sure from what store) ratted him out!
That employee is outta there the moment they get their 50,000.
And that’s IF they get it. Rewards are reneged upon regularly.

I'd like to learn more about his back injury. Someone on one of these threads posted that a friend said Magione really changed after his surgery. It must have been one hell of an injury -- he has three or four pins in the base of his spine at only 26.
Chronic pain can really mess with people. Who knows what combo of meds he's on that might also affect his psychological functioning. All to be brought up by the defense should this go to trial.
Kenny said that police did not have his name prior to Monday and that Mangione had no known prior arrests in the country.
The NYPD got lucky or maybe not? He lingered in the northeast. He had the money and means to leave the U.S. and find his way to a country without an extradition treaty, instead he hung out in a McDonald's carrying incriminating evidence and a manifesto. Come on, he wanted to be caught.

Luigi told the court that he had no drug or mental health problems.
He had $8,000 in US cash, $2,000 in foreign cash, his visa and a Faraday bag with him when he was arrested -- but told the court he didn't know where that money came from and said it may have been planted.

NY doesn't have the death penalty though PA does. But the fact that he crossed state lines (or some such) does that make it a "federal" crime - and the federal gov't DOES have the death penalty, though I don't know if they really use it anymore.

R567, crossing state lines with intent to commit a crime doesn’t automatically elevate something to the status of a federal crime. Every criminal would fight to be tried in federal court if possible, because the judges and prisons are so much better.

The contrast between this smarty pants and the dullard sitting at the top of United Healthcare - and we all know he was selected from an undistinguished record owing to his moral flexibility - Wall Street demans psychopaths and narcissists in the C suite, as a rule - is quite jarring. Meritocracy my ass. Idiocracy is the building block of the New Feudalism.

To answer my question at r560, his back pain is related to a pinched nerve per linked article and he's been in chronic pain for two years. Isn't 24-26 too young for chronic back problems? Also, more about his Hawaii friends.

Except you seem to be the last one to know that he posted his post-spinal surgery X-ray on Twitter showing three or four pins in his lower back.
Or that he's had two years of chronic pain from the pinched nerve. This was reported yesterday, yet here you are with irrelevant twaty opinions. Thanks for your effort 👌!
BTW, yes, he's guilty of homicide or manslaughter. How weird is it that two concepts can coexist?

He had metal pins in his back. So most likely his rage against the CEO is what everyone expected, denial of coverage like so many other Americans.
by Anonymous | reply 599 | December 10, 2024 7:54 AM |
He's from a very wealthy background, r599. If he has pins in his back then he obviously received health care. He seems to have led an active life and was very mobile and agile when committing murder. There is no justification for his "rage against the CEO", if he even had any. He's a cold-blooded murderer.
