Do you prefer white or colored Christmas tree lights?

I’ve always had colored lights, ever since I was a child. My snottiest friends say that colored lights are tacky and they should be white.

by Anonymousreply 92December 16, 2024 4:21 AM

Coloured.

by Anonymousreply 1December 5, 2024 3:02 AM

Also, the colored we’re not allowed to be in my neighborhood until 1973.

by Anonymousreply 2December 5, 2024 3:04 AM

Wow, your friends really sound like they have the true Christmas spirit.

by Anonymousreply 3December 5, 2024 3:07 AM

I detest monochromatic Christmas tree lights, regardless of the color.

by Anonymousreply 4December 5, 2024 3:07 AM

Multicolor lights are ok but the a nice warm golden glow is pretty.

by Anonymousreply 5December 5, 2024 3:08 AM

R3 i’m thinking of one guy in particular. He’s so uptight that he won’t even burp in front of his husband. He goes to another room to burp.

by Anonymousreply 7December 5, 2024 3:10 AM

I like white but honestly Christmas is a pretty tacky holiday. Nothing wrong with happy colored lights twinkling away on the tree on or the house.

by Anonymousreply 8December 5, 2024 3:12 AM

Your friends sound like assholes, OP. You can do better.

Do you like colored lights? Then you put up colored lights.

If your alleged friends have an issue, instruct them to take down the lights, purchase white ones, reimburse you for the colored ones and install the new ones to your exact specifications.

by Anonymousreply 9December 5, 2024 3:12 AM

I despise the current LED lights, they are so tacky and not at all magical.

by Anonymousreply 10December 5, 2024 3:15 AM

“It’s very ’80s ‘Dynasty,’ ” Mr. Doonan wrote in an e-mail, referring to the evening soap opera. “People who are pathological about white lights are usually the same people who stuff their TV into an armoire and try to pretend they don’t have one.”

Colored lights, by contrast, Mr. Doonan said, are “beautiful and magical” and carnival-like.

“When I pass a suburban house festooned with twinkly colored fairy lights,” Mr. Doonan wrote, “I always scream ‘Bravo’ out of the window of my car.”

Multi-colored lights are the best!! No boring clear lights!!

WOW!! That French bottle of wine was really good!! I go to open another one,

Thanks OP!!

by Anonymousreply 12December 5, 2024 3:17 AM

Girls, you're both the prettiest

by Anonymousreply 13December 5, 2024 3:18 AM

Colored-American, OP.

by Anonymousreply 14December 5, 2024 3:19 AM

The most headache-inducing of all are the blue and cold white Hannukah displays

by Anonymousreply 15December 5, 2024 3:20 AM

I have some sets from the 80s and 90s that I still use. Am I going to have a house fire?

by Anonymousreply 16December 5, 2024 3:21 AM

All red, of course.

by Anonymousreply 17December 5, 2024 3:22 AM

I like multi-colored on the tree and then single color - red, white, blue or green - for outside.

I confess that I can't quite explain this preference.

I love the big, clunky old-fashioned multi-colored lights on houses, but they are getting increasingly rare.

by Anonymousreply 18December 5, 2024 3:36 AM

Christmas just isn't what it used to be...

by Anonymousreply 19December 5, 2024 3:39 AM

OP, the term is “multi-colored,” not “colored” — unless you’re referring to black lights.

by Anonymousreply 20December 5, 2024 3:57 AM

R20 Oh no, the correct term for black light is “lights of color.” “Colored lights” is extremely offensive but for some reason in the 2020s “lights of color” is okay.

by Anonymousreply 21December 5, 2024 3:59 AM

Multi colored lights, always.

by Anonymousreply 22December 5, 2024 4:04 AM

Warm light, same colour. None of that multi-coloured crap for kids.

by Anonymousreply 23December 5, 2024 4:06 AM

My mother always used warm white lights so I grew up used to that. I don’t mind color lights, though, and prefer them if big bulbs are used.

by Anonymousreply 24December 5, 2024 4:07 AM

I like blue.

by Anonymousreply 25December 5, 2024 4:10 AM

Jungle Red!

by Anonymousreply 26December 6, 2024 1:06 AM

crisp white, no blinking on a natural tree.

I am not opposed to bright blue lights on a silver fake tree. still no blinking though.

by Anonymousreply 27December 6, 2024 2:07 AM

I like the multi-colored lights that have the screw-in bulbs

by Anonymousreply 28December 6, 2024 2:10 AM

I like the light that is black on red Tree.

by Anonymousreply 29December 6, 2024 2:14 AM

A silver aluminum tree with a rotating color wheel under it looks spectacular compared to a green tree with boring, white string lights on it.

I think they are equal.

Just be sure to keep them separated.

by Anonymousreply 32December 6, 2024 4:20 AM

Colored, definitely.

by Anonymousreply 33December 6, 2024 4:37 AM

Tell your snotty friend for me, it’s warm, multicolored lights or nothing.

by Anonymousreply 34December 6, 2024 4:48 AM

We saved our sanity by buying an artificial tree that has both options. Actually, it has a blinking option as well-switching from white to multicolor, like it’s bipolar. We ignore that choice. He likes non-blinking white, I like non-blinking multicolor. We switch nights, with usually no discord.

And we lived happily ever after, or at least through 2024.

by Anonymousreply 35December 6, 2024 5:01 AM

Discovered Philips ‘’Concave’’? 100 lt. string. Tiny lights w/ 9 motion effects including glisten AND twinkle They’re really great in white and color-indoor/outdoor.

#Christmassowhite

by Anonymousreply 37December 9, 2024 6:52 PM

The colored ones are so big and powerful. They last longer too.

by Anonymousreply 38December 9, 2024 6:55 PM

Both, but I do keep mine segregated.

- Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower

by Anonymousreply 39December 9, 2024 7:08 PM

Colored. All white reminds me of 2001.

by Anonymousreply 40December 9, 2024 7:39 PM

My trees are racist, I guess.

All white because, well, that's what we have.

by Anonymousreply 41December 9, 2024 7:45 PM

Team white.

Warm white. Or, green.

by Anonymousreply 42December 9, 2024 7:53 PM

A tasteful medley of pastels.

by Anonymousreply 43December 9, 2024 7:57 PM

Colored ones, unless it's just all blue. I hate when people do that.

by Anonymousreply 44December 9, 2024 8:55 PM

I usually put white lights close to the trunk because they’re brighter and color lights on the branches.

by Anonymousreply 45December 9, 2024 9:20 PM

White, non-twinkling only on my tree.

by Anonymousreply 46December 9, 2024 9:25 PM

Colored. Plain white lights are for people who are tying to be fancy and most likely grew up poor. Think the yuppie couple in National Lampoon Christmas Vacation.

by Anonymousreply 47December 9, 2024 10:26 PM

[quote] Team white

(Predominantly) white team.

by Anonymousreply 52December 10, 2024 2:26 AM

If they’re hanging then definitely colored.

by Anonymousreply 53December 10, 2024 2:42 AM

Either colored or all white lights can be arranged & co-decorated tastefully.

I do miss the all multicolored lights of my youth, however. And the anticipation of the presents under the tree.

I had/have questionable to decent parents, but they both made sure we had a beautiful Christmas. 🎄

by Anonymousreply 54December 10, 2024 3:15 AM

We do a beautiful tree; Full base of classic white twinkle lights. Overlay of colored balls. Gorgeous. Try it.

by Anonymousreply 55December 10, 2024 3:17 AM

We did all white lights with red & white ornaments this year, R55.

It’s nice. Wish it had been a bit taller & wider.

Oh well. It’s perfectly fine as is.

by Anonymousreply 56December 10, 2024 3:29 AM

But why are they Italian Christmas lights?

by Anonymousreply 57December 10, 2024 3:30 AM

Only white

by Anonymousreply 58December 10, 2024 3:49 AM

Colorred, big 1950-era lights.

by Anonymousreply 59December 10, 2024 3:50 AM

It depends - SOME multi-color lights look good, but many are just tacky. It depends on the decorations.

Single color white is classic - but it needs a contrast.

Single color blue, red, green - fucking awful usually. However, I've seen it done well - but it's rare.

As a general rule for me - the average person doesn't care as long as it's festive. But I've seen a lot of cheap and tacky Christmas displays - we all have. More is not more.

by Anonymousreply 60December 10, 2024 4:47 AM

I prefer them Cuban.

by Anonymousreply 61December 10, 2024 4:51 AM

White vs. colored... hmmm....

by Anonymousreply 62December 10, 2024 4:53 AM

Depends on desired effect. White, calm meditative or bright, festive, happy.

by Anonymousreply 63December 10, 2024 10:03 AM

LED lights are of the devil

by Anonymousreply 64December 10, 2024 10:07 AM

I find my tree looks best with strings of white lights and strings of multicolored lights. (The tree itself is pre-lit with white lights, and I add the others manually.)

by Anonymousreply 65December 10, 2024 10:12 AM

Do any of you bitches still use tinsel?

by Anonymousreply 66December 10, 2024 10:15 AM

The idea that white lights are "classy" is so trite and so middlebrow, I can't believe that people are still clinging to that notion.

by Anonymousreply 67December 10, 2024 10:17 AM

I think it also depends on the hues of the multicolored lights, which can vary dramatically. Some look better to me than others.

by Anonymousreply 68December 10, 2024 10:25 AM

I really miss the mid-century C7 and C9 lights with the enamel. It's total nostalgia. The new LED C7 and C9's have this rought texture that's transparent and I really can't latch onto it, and I think that's what many of you are referring to. I did see some enamel LED version sets, on Amazon, but they were sold out.

I like any kind of lights - the only thing thats horrendous are those stupid inflatables.

by Anonymousreply 70December 10, 2024 12:03 PM

My entire neighbourhood is colored

by Anonymousreply 71December 10, 2024 12:25 PM

I was surprised to learn the other day that most Americans—around 85 percent—who have Christmas trees have fake ones.

C9 ceramic type colored lights are magnificent. T

by Anonymousreply 74December 11, 2024 3:16 PM

“Colored lights” sounds like Stanley Kowalski talking about his sex life.

by Anonymousreply 79December 11, 2024 9:06 PM

R78 real vintage or reproduction?

I love the old sets, but I'm afraid of fires. I've thought about getting Tru-tones, but they would cost a bomb in shipping to my country.

by Anonymousreply 80December 11, 2024 11:01 PM

I still have my grandmother’s 1940’s, I think, bubble lights. That’s what we called them, anyway. Green base, gold liquid, red rising bubbles. Way smaller but like little proto lava lamps you string on the tree. I would be nervous leaving the room when they were lit. You can’t trust the wiring when it’s 75 years old. And you don’t want to unplug the tree every time you get up.

by Anonymousreply 81December 11, 2024 11:35 PM

They don't have to be white, but I do like it when they're all one color.

by Anonymousreply 82December 12, 2024 12:28 AM

My grandmother used to have those multi-color big ole screw-in Christmas lights on her tree. One year, she got a new artificial tree and the damn bulbs got so hot they melted the branches. That's the year she switched to the miniature lights.
