BEARKING : UnitedHealthcare CEO fatally shot in New York City

The CEO of UnitedHealthcare, one of the largest insurance providers in the nation, was fatally shot in the chest Wednesday morning outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan, multiple news outlets reported, citing police sources.

Brian Thompson, 50, was shot just before 7 a.m. near a hotel on 54th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, the New York Post, Bloomberg and WPIX reported. The news station said video showed police tape on the Midtown street as police arrived at the scene.

UnitedHealth did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

A spokesperson for the New York Police City Department who declined to be identified by name told USA TODAY a 50-year-old man was shot in front of the Hilton hotel in Midtown at approximately 6:46 a.m. When police arrived, the man was unconscious and unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the leg and chest.

Medical responders rushed the man to Mount Sinai West, where he was pronounced dead. The spokesperson did not release the name of the man, saying the department is waiting until his family is notified.

No one has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting, according to the NYPD.

UnitedHealth Group is among the nation's largest health insurance companies, providing coverage for more than 27 million U.S. residents as of Dec. 31, 2023. The company covers another 7.8 million people globally with medical and dental benefits, mostly in Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Peru.

Shooter was either disgruntled employee, or was a insurance subscriber unhappy with his high deductible or insurance premiums. I'm calling it now.

by Anonymousreply 2December 4, 2024 3:04 PM

rich fatcat CEOs can all be shot

by Anonymousreply 3December 4, 2024 3:07 PM

My $ is on a person who had a family members claims denied which resulted in needless pain and suffering for the insured but resulted in a really, really great quarter (shareholder $ value!) for the Insurance corporation.

What r3 said. A good start.

Or someone who got fed up with their incessant Medicare Advantage commercials.

It sounds like a hit more than anything...

Not so “bearking”. Third thread on this topic, mein Fuhrer.

“Wednesday morning” is not a date. Is that last Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving? Shitty journalism.

by Anonymousreply 10December 4, 2024 4:26 PM

I don’t want to blame the victim, and we don’t know the motive, but these health insurance companies are the worst, and they rile lots and lots of policyholders.

I’ve entertained murderous thoughts about my provider (not UH).

He stole my lunch everyday from the fridg, I told him I know it's you and he laughed and said prove it as he snacked on my tapioca pudding cup.

United Healthcare provides a lot of Medicare wrap-around coverage for seniors. However, when Seniors are too senior they can be denied life-saving care because of their age and infirmity (i.e no kidney transplant list).

by Anonymousreply 13December 4, 2024 4:47 PM

It was an enraged television viewer sick to death of watching all their Medicare Advantage ads they've been inundating the air waves with since Medicare Open Enrollment began. December 7th can't come soon enough.

One can only take so much.

by Anonymousreply 14December 4, 2024 5:12 PM

So I am not day-drinking, but I do have my tin hat on. United is the top company for Medicare Advantage plans, and Project 2025's healthcare initiatives are promoting or mandating a switch to Medicare Advantage for a lot of people. This has been called a 'multibillion dollar handout' to the insurance companies.

If the deceased were planning to speak at a meeting of investors today, who would want to prevent his addressing any anticipated taxpayer-funded windfall?

by Anonymousreply 15December 4, 2024 5:25 PM

Interesting that the killer was waiting there at 6:45 in the morning. The investors event started at 8am. So the victim was coming from a different hotel, and this person knew his schedule... I wonder if he ambushed him at the Hilton to make it clear that this was job related.

"Wednesday morning" is a time. If it were last Wednesday, they would have either reported 'last Wednesday morning' or 'November 27 2024'. Shitty reading comprehension skills for R10.

a dramatic reminder to CEOs everywhere that they make decisions (good and bad) effecting real peoples lives. And, when you make corporate decisions based solely upon the balance sheet, ignoring any associated costs in human suffering, you gamble knowing there can be a price to be paid.

??? R32, you sound like a villain in a 'Batman' movie.

by Anonymousreply 41December 5, 2024 3:00 AM

The assassin’s trail went cold in Central Park because of the lack of video surveillance. That’s probably where changed his clothes, ditched the backpack, and left the park undetected. Inspired by RFK Jr.’s bear episode, maybe?

by Anonymousreply 50December 5, 2024 7:35 AM

It reminds me quite a bit of the 2019 assassination in Berlin of Zelimkhan Khangoshvili, who was shot by a Russian operative in the same fashion: use of a silencer, a double tap, escape on a bicycle, change of clothes, etc. It was kind of a repeating pattern with this particular assassin, Vadim Krasikov, of whom it might be pointed out is currently free.

Right? They offer a measly reward of 10 grand for a 10 million dollar asset and expect people are going to flood the phone lines with tips. 🤣🙄

Since the position is now open, hopefully a svelte replacement can be found. Being a fat CEO of a major health insurer group is too cliché, perhaps a weight ceiling should be enforced to attain one's golden parachute.
