Bill Maher says he may quit HBO’s ‘Real Time’ because he doesn't want to do more Donald Trump coverage
New rule: if Donald Trump is getting back his old job, then it might not be worth staying at your current job. That’s the premise that Bill Maher floated on his “Club Random” podcast speaking with Jane Fonda in an episode released Sunday. While interviewing the actor and activist, Maher expressed exhaustion at the prospect of covering Trump’s administration for the next four years.
“I mean I may quit,” Maher told Fonda. “I don’t want to do another… I did Trump. I did all the Trump stuff before anybody. I called him a con man before anybody. I did, ‘He’s a mafia boss.’ I was the one who said he wasn’t going to concede the election. I’ve done it. I’ve seen this fucking—”
“Well then how come he’s so hostile to Jimmy Kimmel and not to you?” Fonda interrupted.
“He’s very hostile to me. He tweets about me every week. Every week he accidentally watches my show and goes, ‘Low ratings loser!’ I’m bored with it,” Maher answered. “The show is the politics. There is no other thing. And he’s going to dominate the news like he always does.”
President-elect Trump last made headlines for attacking Maher back in September, when he wrote in a post on his platform Truth Social, “I seldom watch Low Rated Bill Maher but, when I do, I marvel at the fake laughter on the Show. It sounds like a bad ‘Laugh Machine,’ it’s so obnoxious and disgusting, just like him, always laughing no matter what is said.”
Whether or not Maher is seriously weighing an exit from “Real Time” due to Trump’s coming presidency, the host is supposedly on the books through 2026. Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO renewed “Real Time” for two more seasons back in March.
“Two more years in the dream job of a lifetime, on the network so many dream of being on — I think that’s what we call a no-brainer,” Maher said in a statement at the time. Maher has led “Real Time” on HBO since 2003 and has done 12 comedy specials for the network. “Real Time” was last renewed in 2021 with a two-season guarantor.

The show has been renewed through 2026. No way is he walking away before then.

Maher starts a new season after the Trump inauguration, so he's off the air for a while (and he said he won't be touring as much over the next few months). The guy needs to stay in the spotlight somehow if he wants his audience and new viewers tuning in - viewers are fickle, and may switch to another show in the meantime. So he knows how to draw attention to himself, and feign 'I'm thinking of quitting'.

I stopped watching his show around 2021 when he said at the start of one of his shows that he no longer has any naysayers in his audience because it detracts from his performance. So he only wants ditto-heads as his audience so he gets applause and cheers on his show. I switched the channel and never watched him again. He is living in his own bubble .

"viewers are fickle,"
Stopped watching him when he was incessantly whining about how awful California is a couple of years back. Have no intention of returning because he's a pompous blowhard.

Sounds like he's just tooting his own horn and won't really quit.
I liked the part where Bill tried to make it look like Trump is out to get him and Jane is like, "How come he's always hostile toward Jimmy Kimmel and not to you?" haha
A legend in his own mind.

Maher right. Trump is always tweeting about someone’s low ratings, yet accidentally watches the shit. Dumb cunt.

He’s right about Trump dominating the news. I wish we could all collectively ignore him which would drive him crazy.

Poor Bill has Trump Fatigue. Like the rest of the nation, I'm so tired of this guy getting high on the smell of his own farts

Bill, Jane and Jimmy will all be in the camps soon enough. Trump never forgives, never forgets, until his dementia permanetly liquifies his pea brain.

I suspect he won't quit at all, but if he is honestly bored with the show there is an easy way to shake it up. Have actual leftists on. Don't restrict yourself to hand-wringing liberals who are more interested in agreeing with Maher on "woke" college kids than actually arguing with him. That is what makes him, and the entire show, so boring over the last year.
Every time you bring on a wingnut to say wingnut shit, pause and think can I get an equally opinionated leftist, even if they commit the sin of disagreeing with me about wokeness.

R16 You obviously don’t watch Maher because he has plenty of guests who disagree with him.

Good. I'm tired of Donald Trump. I wish the rest of MSM would just cancel any news about him over the next 4 years.

They disagree with him on a few things they're allowed to disagree with him on. r17. Nobody is allowed to disagree with him on the fundamental question of whether all woke politics are terrible and the Democratic Party must renounce them.
Also, the show could deal with a few actual pro-Palestinians and Muslim activists. Again, he always plays it safe there. Some demurrals about whether Israel is being a little rough, but no actual confrontation of the underlying issues.
And finally, the people who most disagree with him are Trump Cult members like Megyn Kelly. He's fine with that. He needs to also extend that to the leftists that disagree with him from the left.

"Bill Maher says he may quit HBO’s ‘Real Time’ because he doesn't want to do more Donald Trump coverage"
"Bill Maher says he may quit HBO’s ‘Real Time’ because he is pissing his pants in fright because he is terrified of Trump."
There, fixed.

Bill Maher isn't going anywhere. He loves the spotlight.
That "quitting" line was a throwaway, not serious.

I disengaged with him around 2004 at the same time I gave up on Dennis Miller and Jon Stewart.
He’s someone who doesn’t care the spirit of an argument; he simply picks the most provocative, attention-seeking one.

No, r24, it was for declaring that the hijackers weren't in fact cowards. The truth is, suicide bombers aren't technically cowards, and in fact lobbing missiles in a war is more innately cowardly. But America wasn't about to hear that after 9/11. There was a mandatory script, and understandably emotions were so raw that I can see why there was a script, but for the crime of violating the script Bill Maher was cancelled. Looking back, it was unjust, but at that time "just" simply didn't matter to our country.
Honestly, I wish Maher would show a little courage now and stop carefully screening guests for only the most pre-digested opinions that he can deal with. As I indicated above, if he's bored it's entirely his own damn fault for weeding out people that actually challenge him.

And I should clarify that it was Maher saying that lobbing missiles is cowardly compared to purposely driving an airplane into a building knowing that you are going to die along with everybody else. Lobbing missiles is just part of how we do war now, and isn't either cowardly or heroic.
Weirdest part: he was agreeing with wingnut Dinesh D'Souza, who was the one initially saying that he disagreed with Bush's statement that the hijackers were all cowards.
