What was this 1999-2000 hairstyle called?

Around 1999-2000 it I noticed a lot of young actresses getting some version of this shaggy do. Believe it was a short-lived fad. I even had a hairdresser recommend it to me because I had thin, fine hair about that length. I said no.

Brittany Murphy had it when she first went blonde.

Looks like a modified (shorter) Rachel. I think Christina Aguilera had her hair cut like that, for a while.

by Anonymousreply 4December 4, 2024 4:54 AM

I’ve no idea but this was the era I grew up in. I think they started with the “Rachel” in the mid 90s and ended up here.

I think it died with Kate Gosselin.

by Anonymousreply 5December 4, 2024 4:56 AM

Is it related to the Klute shag?

by Anonymousreply 6December 4, 2024 4:59 AM

The only thing I can think of is “flipped out bob”

It looks like a grown-out Meg Ryan iconic 90s cut, The Meg.

is the fact that OP's hair color looks natural and not dyed pink or purple or peroxided important?

by Anonymousreply 9December 4, 2024 6:43 AM

It's called the SVU bob OP

by Anonymousreply 10December 4, 2024 7:01 AM

Feathered pixie cut?

by Anonymousreply 11December 4, 2024 7:20 AM

Not a pixie, R11

by Anonymousreply 12December 4, 2024 7:31 AM

Lisa Rinna perfected it by cutting an inch off and adding bangs.

by Anonymousreply 13December 4, 2024 7:35 AM

Fuck, Willow always had the WORST hairstyles.

by Anonymousreply 14December 4, 2024 7:38 AM

It says “Roller Boogie” to me. IIRC, boys on skateboards had this cut in the 1970s.

Proto-Karen

Yes. The colorful dyes are a marker for Y2K era.

by Anonymousreply 23December 4, 2024 4:03 PM

I'll welcome that hairstyle over today's hideous long MAGA extensions any time.

by Anonymousreply 24December 4, 2024 4:22 PM

As a frau, this is simply a “ short shag.” At one point I had the Linda Evan’s dynasty cut - all one length to the shoulder and modified long wing pieces feathered back, along with longish bangs .

That wasn’t the most scarey.

A long shag often bordered on the Christmas tree head — shortish layers on top , long hair feathered back and bangs —- it really was borderline mullet as well

by Anonymousreply 25December 4, 2024 4:22 PM

I was thinking it was the Meg Ryan You've Got Mail which was 1998 but looking at pics from the film her style is shorter.

Allison Mack had the same hairstyle first season of Smallville, no?

by Anonymousreply 29December 4, 2024 11:46 PM

I was a stylist through that time. People called it a flippy bob, or just wanted flippy hair. I never knew it to have any particular name.

by Anonymousreply 30December 4, 2024 11:52 PM

Calling it a style is very generous.

by Anonymousreply 31December 4, 2024 11:58 PM

It's the Koji-Karu cut.

by Anonymousreply 32December 5, 2024 12:06 AM

Singer Sarah McLachlan had it for a while...

In retrospect, I think this was a style influenced by Meg Ryan, as another poster said. People forget, but somehow this hairstyle was a big thing, at the time.

All these styles were sally herschbergers fault. At the time they read as 70s rocker babe.

by Anonymousreply 43December 5, 2024 2:11 AM

My mom always called it a weed whacker cut.

by Anonymousreply 44December 5, 2024 2:35 AM

The “Flo”?? It reminds me of the ‘do that Florence Henderson grew out around that time, after she reprised her early ‘70s “Brady Bunch” shag hairstyle for about 14 seconds around 1999.

I think it’s cute. Not every woman needs long tresses.

by Anonymousreply 51December 5, 2024 4:18 PM

The girl who used to cut my hair around that time called it "Rachel" or "Shabob".

by Anonymousreply 52December 5, 2024 4:22 PM

I remember some girls would adorn their flippy bobs with those little, sparkly, butterfly hair claws.

One. of my favorite haircuts ever. I brought in my son's Final Fantasy game and said 'give me that haircut'. Every once in a while I throw some layers in my long bob and flip my ends. I use spray wax to get the ends a bit spiky.
