Village People's Victor Willis says Y.M.C.A. is NOT a gay anthem
You homos need to get your minds out of the gutter!
[quote]This assumption is also based on the fact that the YMCA was apparently being used as some sort of gay hangout and since one of the writers was gay and some of the Village People are gay, the song must be a message to gay people. To that I say once again, get your minds out of the gutter. It is not.
[quote]I therefore wrote Y.M.C.A. about the things I knew about the Y in the urban areas of San Francisco such as swimming, basketball, track, and cheap food and cheap rooms. And when I say, “hang out with all the boys” that is simply 1970s black slang for black guys hanging-out together for sports, gambling or whatever. There’s nothing gay about that.
MARY!

What an asshole. He realizes Trump is a racist, etc., right? I guess he and Jenner, who was in the village people movie, can sit and share non-gay stories together.

Even if it were a gay anthem (and it's been used as one), how is that in the "gutter"?

Willis is a mess. He was married to Phylicia Rashad, Cosby's TV wife, and he wasn't down with the whole gay thing. After she left him and he left the group, he lived in my SF neighborhood and was on crack or speed or both with some mental issues. he started unraveling and he'd be selling crap at street sales in front of his building, like old computer parts and small appliances.

Guess he's squeezed all the gay dollars he can out of it without a nary a peep of protest, but now that its rejected by the gay community, well now he's willing to surrender it to maga.

When did the gays reject YMCA?
Granted, it’s verging on half a century old, but Inhavent heard of it being rejected.

[quote] When did the gays reject YMCA?
Not soon enough.
It’s now the domain of cheap, suburban wedding receptions, bar mitzvahs to keep the grandparents engaged and game days at Buffalo Wild Wings.
It’s practically radioactive to the homos at this point.
Never speak of it again.

Sure enough that was a gay tune. Jacques Morali wrote it with that intent, along with all his other songs. He liked Willis' voice and told him he could take the tune all the way to number one so Willis signed on, the only straight member of the group. Porn star and soap detective Dennis Parker/Wade Nichols was a kept boy and fisting bottom for Morali, which seemed kinda odd since Morali wasn't exactly a butchy boy and Parker kinda was. But that's what Dennis liked and he died in 1985 with Morali following him in '91.
