I never saw her sing or dance so I can't comment on her abilities in that regard, but she wasn't an actor. Her looks got her some roles in less than great films, and as she aged, she was no longer in demand. Really I never understood her appeal, but my brother who is straight, thought she was hot.

She just wasn't very talented. (Even though she is acceptable in "The Last of Sheila," one of my favorite movies ever.

I have some book about mean reviews on my shelves. Raquel had a whole chapter devoted to her. The one that sticks out in my mind is something to the effect of "She plays an Indian in the movie. Apparently from the Cigar Store tribe."

I thoroughly enjoyed her in "Woman of the Year" in 1982. The audience gave her thunderous ovations.

For a sex bomb she carried herself and presented herself well, with poise.

She wasn't a talent in anything really. Celebrityhood and being beautiful. Yes in addition to being sexy she was actually beautiful, too. She managed to bring it all together in stage performances. I guess that's the control she had over her entire presentation, lacking some great talent to rely upon.

Welch was always poised in public appearances and she wasn't a very modern woman or I should say, contemporary. Also took herself seriously and no layers. I got the impression she might have been a bitch or diva when the cameras were off, and not a funny one. Comparisons: Joan Collins in her prime and after often has fun and had layers. She's amusing and in on the joke and do high camp. Sharon Stone is kooky and loopy. Gina Gershon reminded me of Welch but her career never took off at all.

Faye Dunaway worked with Raquel in the Three/Four Musketeers movies. I wonder how they got along. Faye is another one who could have benefitted if she only had a sense of humor about herself.

Her gorgeous daughter, Tahnee, also kind of sank after making a splash in "Cocoon." I expected both Tahnee and Tyrone Power Jr. to go places. They were both striking.

OP, she was a huge star, just not in movies.

Raquel needed speech lessons. I always thought she wanted to sound “pretty” when she spoke - like a singer who sings so pretty you don’t hear the words. To be an effective actor, you have to get down and show emotion and spontaneity with your voice, even if it sounds unpleasant at times. Raquel was always protecting her pin-up status when she “acted.”

She had a reputation for being a pain in the ass. People didn’t enjoy working with her.

I agree R36, I just don't think Raquel had the edge to become a serious actress. Word on the street is that's why Deirdre Hall and Jaclyn Smith disinvited her from their scene study workshops they held at one another's homes up until fairly recently, wherein they would perform scenes together from the works of Mamet, Labute and Dan Goggin whereupon they would give one another extensive acting notes to one another. Apparently they felt that Raquel wasn't a risk taker and lacked the grittiness to be a real actor.
