Eldergays, tell me about Dame Margaret Rutherford.
Was she more of a Dame May Whitty or an Edith Evans? Would Patricia Routledge be her modern day counterpart?

I remember watching Murder at the Gallop years and years ago. It was a funny movie.

I could watch the openings of her Miss Marple films for hours if were there so many.

She is the best and only reason to watch the film " Blithe Spirit ".

She was also great in Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. Though Edith Evans is the one who walks away with that film.

She was the Aaron Taylor-Johnson of her day. Cum gutters for days.

I was a nerdy movie obsessed gay as a youngster. I watched the VIPs and thought, “they gave her an Oscar for that?!”
Now I can see how talented she was.
She had a very tough private life.

R3 why?

If there were Oscars for scene-stealing, she'd have twenty of them. Perhaps her best vehicle is The Happiest Days of Your Life', setting her against the equally magnificent Alastair Sim, and indeed the similarly accomplished scene-stealer, Joyce Grenfell.

She's my favorite cinema Miss Marple. Angela Lansbury needs to stick to J.B. Fletcher.

She WAS Dame Margaret Rutherford!

I agree. Rutherford played Lady Bracknell (Evans' part in the movie) on Broadway with John Gielgud, but after seeing Evans' performance, it's hard to imagine anyone else doing it better.

She was a scene stealer. I love her in everything.

Rutherford was the first one to bring Miss Marple to the screen, although her interpretation was rather rough around the edges. Joan Hickson's TV version in the 1980's & 90's was closer to the way Agatha Christie wrote the character.
Julia McKenzie has also done a decent job of playing Marple in more recent years.
