I haven’t seen this movie but a lot of people are saying this is category fraud

Best Supporting Actor : Kiernan Culkin

by Anonymousreply 2December 3, 2024 4:13 PM

Kieran....

It basically is category fraud, R1. Culkin and Eisenberg are the two leads, and while Eisenberg has a little more screen time, the difference is slight. Both characters drive the entire plot.

A good comparison is Green Book, another movie that's basically about only two characters. Even in that movie, the perspective is weighted mostly toward Viggo Mortensen's character, and he gets more to do that doesn't involve Mahershala Ali. That's not really the case with A Real Pain. It's a lot more balanced, and people rightfully considered Ali's placement in Supporting questionable. This is even less defensible.

FRAUD!

If "Thelma & Louise" were released today, you know they'd put Sarandon in Lead and Davis in Supporting.

Best Actress went to Marianne Jean-Baptiste for Mike Leigh's Hard Truths.

They voted for this category before Supporting Actress. Not sure if that means anything.

No such thing.

Best Supporting Actress: Carol Kane for Between the Temples.

She won't get anywhere near an Oscar nomination for this, but who cares? It's Carol Kane.

by Anonymousreply 9December 3, 2024 4:47 PM

LILLIAN!

by Anonymousreply 10December 3, 2024 4:49 PM

R7 I haven't seen this movie yet so can't speak to the quality of her performance, but I would love to see an actor from a Mike Leigh film finally rewarded with an Oscar.

Best ACTRESS Drama...Lady Gaga,

BEST ACTRESS: Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Hard Truths

Screenplay: Sean Baker, Anora

I don’t put much stock anymore into these critics or regional groups. The televised awards have completely different voting bodies and procedures. Golden Globes and SAG do their own thing. Also, Bafta actually is becoming even more important than SAG. The critics groups may start the train but ultimately the Academy looks at what GG, SAG, CC, and Bafta have done.

The point of these awards is not to predict the Oscars.

by Anonymousreply 16December 3, 2024 9:31 PM

That's the job of the Critics Choice Awards, which exist basically just to predict the eventual Oscar winners. Everyone makes fun of the Golden Globes, but at least they have their own peculiar quirks.

Also, The Brutalist won Best Film and Adrien Brody won Best Actor for his performance in it. RaMell Ross won Best Director for Nickel Boys. That closes out the major awards at NYFCC.

Is Culkin really that good in A Real Pain?

Louder for the people in the back. Everything is not about the Oscars.

These are different groups of people giving their opinions on the best films and performances. Often more more interesting and off the beaten path picks.

r4: Everybody knows these awards are not based on merit. They're based on who ran the best campaign.

by Anonymousreply 20December 3, 2024 9:56 PM

R4= Cynthia Erivo.
