South Korea has fallen

Once again, the Asians beat us to it.

OMG, I just also posted the same topic on a thread regarding this. And I checked before doing so.

Apologies.

by Anonymousreply 5December 3, 2024 3:47 PM

What time is Trump's inauguration on 1/20/25? I'm guessing 5 minutes after he's sworn in there will be some sort of "national emergency" that will require Martial Law.

Trump is, after all, an inveterate drama queen, as we saw on 1/6/21.

[quote]“Great deals on the brands you love, that’s Marshall’s Law!”

I love KKKhol's.

[quote]At least someone has the balls to protect Democracy.

He is a deeply unpopular right-winger trying to avoid being impeached for multiple scandals. He is no hero.

by Anonymousreply 8December 3, 2024 4:05 PM

It's not just that he's declared martial law. Military officials have decided to back him up even though the South Korean parliament voted to overturn the declaration of martial law.

by Anonymousreply 9December 3, 2024 4:55 PM

Military troops tried to storm parliament. Parliamentary aides used fire extinguishers to try to stop them. Argentina-level stuff!

by Anonymousreply 10December 3, 2024 4:59 PM

Assembly overturned his martial law decree and police and military are being pulled back. He is very unpopular so the next step for him is impeachment.

Nothing has fucking fallen Yoon is toast after this outrage.

by Anonymousreply 17December 3, 2024 5:48 PM

Ho Lee Fuk!

by Anonymousreply 18December 3, 2024 5:50 PM

Can't it get up?

by Anonymousreply 19December 3, 2024 6:29 PM

R19, no. South Korea is a fat whore!

by Anonymousreply 20December 3, 2024 6:31 PM

So he put in martial law - and the assembly unanimously voted to repeal it several hours later.

He's going DOWN! He's desperate. He's a right wing asshole with low popularity numbers.

by Anonymousreply 21December 3, 2024 6:35 PM

Whats going on?

by Anonymousreply 22December 3, 2024 6:37 PM

R22 - right-winger President was extremely unpopular and couldn't get anything passed so he threw a hissy fit and declared martial law, which was overturned several hours later by their Congress.

A lot to do about nothing - he'll be out of office shortly. Impeachment is coming. His own party doesn't like him.

by Anonymousreply 23December 3, 2024 6:47 PM

R23, I wouldn’t be that blasé about this. South Korea has not been a democracy for very long and, so far, the military has said that only the president can rescind the order for martial law.

by Anonymousreply 24December 3, 2024 7:02 PM

In any crisis we can always depend on the ‘’Sum Ting Wong’’ guy-I feel better already.

by Anonymousreply 25December 3, 2024 7:26 PM

Martial Law is now over (so is presidents career)

by Anonymousreply 26December 3, 2024 7:32 PM

All because his bitch wife accepted a $2,200 Dior handbag.

by Anonymousreply 27December 3, 2024 7:36 PM

It is helpful for Trump to witness this, and witness its failure, because the odds are greater than zero that he’ll be tempted to try it in a very similar dynamic.

by Anonymousreply 32December 3, 2024 9:00 PM

They don't fuck around with their impeachments. The last one to be impeached was Park Geun-hye, who was found guilty of corruption.

[quote]Park was formally sentenced to 24 years in prison on 6 April 2018 after being found guilty of abuse of power and coercion. This was later raised to 25 years and a fine of ₩20 billion (US$17.86 million) following an appeal by prosecutors.

Here is a report about 800,000 people ( expected 1.5 million total as the evening went on) gathering to demand impeachment. Imagine the same thing happening in the US. You couldn't.

Oh I don't count Trump out in that regard at all. If he gets as crazy as I think he will it will not shock me if it gets so bad the military has to make a move.

[quote]It is helpful for Trump to witness this, and witness its failure, because the odds are greater than zero that he’ll be tempted to try it in a very similar dynamic.

The difference between South Korea and the U.S. under Trump is the opposition holds a majority there as opposed to Republicans who will control both chambers of Congress. They'd never assert themselves against the desires of their dear leader. If they did, Elon Musk would threaten to finance primary challengers if they act independently and comply with their constitutional obligations, like he's already trying to do.

by Anonymousreply 35December 3, 2024 9:25 PM

r34 The purging of the military of anyone who might stand up to him is going to start as soon as he's in office.

by Anonymousreply 36December 3, 2024 9:33 PM

Damn, R17, who went pee-pee in YOUR Coke?

by Anonymousreply 37December 3, 2024 9:42 PM

KIA 10 year warranty over now. Martial Law say so.

by Anonymousreply 42December 3, 2024 10:13 PM

R41 Prosperous, not that stable yet since the country has only been a parliamentary democracy since 1987. Looong history of military rule, old habits die hard.

by Anonymousreply 43December 3, 2024 10:17 PM

[quote]Damn, R17, who went pee-pee in YOUR Coke?

Are you telling on yourself, R37? Are you the pisser or the pissee? I'm not into that and my point still stands. Can't mention an Asian country, person or culture on DL without "Sum Ting Wong" and "Ho Lee Fuk" popping up. It wasn't amusing in 2013 and isn't funny now. Just stereotypical bullshit. That's all I said.

by Anonymousreply 44December 3, 2024 10:29 PM

Is Johnny Somali involved?

by Anonymousreply 45December 3, 2024 10:35 PM

It's a rich country with relatively low wealth inequality. It's also got the lowest fertility rate in the world so its population is shrinking.

Why is its politics so fuddup?

by Anonymousreply 46December 3, 2024 10:43 PM

South Korea is essentially a western country in terms of highly-developed, high-income and low population growth rates. Japan and much of Europe are experiencing the same issues with high cost of living with regards to housing and education, plus a demanding work culture, and couples waiting later to have children. The U.S. would be in the same boat without immigration, so a radical change of course would have an impact, especially as the overall population ages.

by Anonymousreply 47December 3, 2024 11:07 PM

[quote]The U.S. would be in the same boat without immigration, so a radical change of course would have an impact, especially as the overall population ages.

by Anonymousreply 48December 3, 2024 11:10 PM

I am surprised both that he tried this and that he did it so ineptly, this is one of the most advanced societies in the world.

Now North Korea actually looks like the stable one.

by Anonymousreply 49December 3, 2024 11:18 PM

No-Trump is loved by Repug.Congress unlike South Korean president-his own party wants him out. Repugs. will tolerate anything Dump comes up with-martial law-partial law or any shit that orange prick comes up with-we’re dead-Dems.

by Anonymousreply 55December 4, 2024 12:19 AM

How so? R55

by Anonymousreply 56December 4, 2024 12:20 AM

Apparently the conservatives did not know what they were getting with Pres.Yoon- 17% approval rating before today’s declaration of martial law..

by Anonymousreply 57December 4, 2024 12:22 AM

South Korea's gender wage gap remains the largest in the developed world, with women earning 31% less than men as of 2022. There are smaller proportion of women on corporate boards and in parliament than in most other affluent countries.

by Anonymousreply 58December 4, 2024 12:22 AM

R48 The U.S. population is aging and the thing that is keeping us from population decline is robust immigration. We'd be like much of Europe, South Korea and Japan demographically without it. If Trump implements radical changes to the immigration system that substantially reduces the number of immigrants coming in, the nation's overall population would stagnate or decline. That's what I was explaining in the previous post.

by Anonymousreply 59December 4, 2024 12:33 AM

This is a very troubling situation. Yoon didn’t just think of this on his own. Democracies are under attack everywhere by the Right and billionaires. In case you don’t know, look how Afghanistan used to be before it fell to authoritarianism. Same for Iran. And we all know 1930s Germany. If you think America can’t fall fast and we lose all of our rights, think again.

by Anonymousreply 60December 4, 2024 1:04 AM

^^^ I'm making the most out of this final full month of sane democratic governance before the coming shitshow.

by Anonymousreply 61December 4, 2024 1:08 AM

You all is crazy. Trump is going to behave himself this term. All these crazy appointments he's making at the moment are because he can fire them all and render them powerless. He can then bring on competent people. Read the tea leaves. The man is not stupid.

by Anonymousreply 62December 4, 2024 1:11 AM

[quote]Oh I don't count Trump out in that regard at all. If he gets as crazy as I think he will it will not shock me if it gets so bad the military has to make a move.

I was referring to the 1.5 million protesters assembling to demand the resignation or impeachment of the president. Americans are too busy voting for DWTS.

Earlier, the party said it would start impeachment proceedings against Yoon if he does not step down immediately over his martial law declaration, which it called an act of rebellion. Yoon’s chief of staff and other top officials have already submitted their resignations.

Any country electing a right wing leader at this moment in history is in danger of forces turning that country into a dictatorship.

Thank God Almighty we live in the greatest, most stable country in the world where we’d never elect a felon, adjudicated rapist, conman, sociopathic pathological liar who tried to mount an insurrection once, and who actually said he’d become a dictator on day one!

But the price of eggs and milk were just too high and as the only country in the world that experienced inflation, its alll Biden's fault. So I cast my vote for a felon who will uphold the law, respect the constitution and will instantly lower prices at the grocery store on day one because of his vast knowledge of running successful businesses.

by Anonymousreply 75December 4, 2024 10:54 PM

^^^The President of South Korea's martial law debacle is a scenario that Donald Trump and his followers have floated before, that's why he's brought up so much in this thread. Plus, the thread will catch more attention in the coming days as the National Assembly starts the impeachment process.

by Anonymousreply 77December 5, 2024 10:37 AM

The impeachment vote failed, but President Yoon is done. His party wants him to resign and the opposition said they would continue to file impeachment motions weekly until he's gone.

by Anonymousreply 80December 7, 2024 7:51 PM

Second attempt to impeach and remove the President from office is underway.
