Why is Kendrick Lamar so popular?
He’s not handsome. He’s not as good looking as Charlie Puth or Justin Bieber or Shawn Mendes or Benson Boone.
He can’t sing. He doesn’t play any musical instruments.
He can’t pronounce proper English.
His music sucks and sounds terrible.
Why is he debuting at No. 1? I don’t understand.

He's fiery, fierce, charismatic and a highly talented lyricist and performer. It's not complicated.

Charlie Puth is not that good looking.

Give me an example of good lyrics from him, R1.
Show me a video of him being charismatic.
You know he’s just another Diddy in training. He’s from that culture.

OP put down the liquor bottle. Why would you compare a rapper to a list of white singers. Saying a rapper cannot sing is like saying a NFL linebacker can't dribble a basketball. LOG OFF BOOMER.

Well, he did win the Pulitzer Prize in Music so some people take him seriously.

r9 You don't know shit about hip-hop you dumb ass bitch. Kendrick is a conscious rapper in the vein of Tribe Called Quest, Talib Kweli, Pharcyde. He just made it very mainstream and to a next level they never achieved. Your dumb ass probably doesn't even realize, Puffy was an R&B producer first.

Hi Teafake! You've started early on the pipe this week. Or is your weekend binge still going?

I've confused Kendrick Lamar with Common. This is a good song.

R11, no, it is not like comparing an NFL linebacker to a basketball player, it’s like comparing a tricycle rider to a motorcycle rider or a BMX rider!

I know nothing about rap. Nothing. I can't stand it at worst and am indifferent to it at best.
But whenever I hear a rap song that I actually like? It always ends up being either Kendrick or Eminem.
So there's that.

R21 If you're trying to make a case for Kendrick Lamar with that clip, you're failing.

Eww...how old are you OP? He's a rapper. Looks have NOTHING to do with it, you cornball.

I thought To Pimp a Butterfly was a terrible name for an album.
Didn’t they give him a Peabody that year? 🤣
Fuck Drake too. Ghetto culture is toxic and holds the black people back.

Lamar stans say Drake isn’t black enough.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 3, 2024 6:53 PM

R25 Which is complete bullshit and I prefer Kendrick. It’s just jealousy. Drake presents black and completely grew up with black culture. All of a sudden, Drake is not black because he keeps breaking all these records. Nobody was making this argument when Drake and his black homies at Young Money hit the scene in the late aughts.

I don't understand why people continue to compare Drake and Kendrick. I get it to some extent, but they are two distinctly different artists. It's similar to comparing Lennon to McCartney.
To clarify, this is not about comparing the talents of these individuals in terms of legacy, impact, or skill. Rather, it's just a comparison I thought might resonate with DL. It’s like comparing Sleater-Kinney to Bikini Kill, or Nirvana to the Foo Fighters. They belong to the same genre, but the results are different.
Drake would be McCartney, and Lamar would be the Lennon.

R26 Drake is mixed race and was raised by his white mother in the white suburbs. I don’t know what you’re talking about him being raised in a black neighborhood in black culture in Canada. I don’t think so.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | December 10, 2024 3:27 AM

R31 First of all he was not always raised in white suburbs. He was raised in both Toronto and Memphis. But more importantly my larger point was he was socialized as black and grew up with hip hop. Even growing up in your typical upper middle class suburbs, Drake is black. And his father has always been in his life even not being the primary caretaker. Drake has talked about this. Drake grew up in Canada’s version of Hollywood since the age of 12 as he was child actor on a hit television show.

I don't know what he's talking about either, R31. I'm not a Drake fan, but, I liked Aubrey Graham on Degrassi.

Drake around same age as me. I’ve had black mixed race homies Jamaican dad, Jewish mom in high school. Everyone considered them black even if acknowledging their mixed raceness. It’s just jealousy in my opinion why this is an “issue” now.

And these same black clowns who want to diminish Drake’s blackness would never ever do it to Barack Obama. It’s like they forget Obama the Greatmom is a whole white woman.
