Guns N' Roses: Don't Cry

DJB was counting down the Top 30 hits of 1991 yesterday on Sirius XM's 90s on 9 and I heard this song again for the first time in decades.

Wasn't really a big GnR fan in high school but I have to admit this song is just beautiful and hits totally different as a middle-aged adult.

November Rain gets the glory (rightfully so) but this is another gem. Song features backing vocals from Blind Melon's late Shannon Hoon.

Any other fans of this song or songs that hit you differently as an adult vs your childhood?

I was a huge fan of this album. Listen to the alternate version of "Don't Cry", it's even better. Another great one from that album is "Estranged".

OP, I like that song, too

Nirvana came along and totally dethroned GnR. I was 11 at the time and became the biggest Nirvana fan ever. GnR was relegated to my older sister's generation. Over night the band and all their songs became "so 80s" to my younger self!

But, I agree OP: Now I can appreciate this song. It's really quite good.

Kurt & Courtney hated Axl. I believe it came to fisticuffs at the VMAs.

But listening to this song and November Rain, looking back with time, Nirvana never recorded anything this epic or with such a high degree of musicality.

Maybe if Kurt had lived longer, recorded more but that is time and its judgments for you to decide.

Yes, I love this song and November Rain. I always listen to those. I really liked Shannon Hoon, too. Don't Cry is so hauntingly beautiful.

R4 I agree Kurt really wasn't into the (often) overly indulgent epic metal lite music that GnR was great at.

But Nirvana is probably the most popular "classic rock" band in the world (after the Beatles, I guess). Gen Z loves them. So they must have done something right.

Axl’s voice is shot. He played piano amd sang November Rain at Lisa Presley’s funeral and he sounded like he had completely lost his ability to sing.

Agree op. I was never a fan but my (younger teenage sister at the time) was obsssed with them, so I inevitably heard them (no pods the ). But a couple of hears ago heard this one and loved it, to my surprise…
