How did we end up with such a fragile population and the need for “trigger warnings?”
I’m looking for a serious discussion here, not a “bash the young people” thread.
I’m guessing it was just that society progressed to a point that people got too comfortable and now they can’t handle anything. My mother didn’t care if I got beaten up at school, but it wasn’t until long after I was out of high school that anti-bullying became a thing.
When I did my MBA a few years ago we had to take sexual assault prevention training. There was a section about “sexual assault” where the narrator literally said “if this topic makes you uncomfortable, you can skip to the next section.” I couldn’t believe it. If you’re going to be an adult, you need to accept that things happen. And what if your friend is sexually assaulted and they come to you for help because they don’t know what to do? Don’t you need to know what to do to help them?

That's weird that the instructions provided an opportunity to skip that section. A trigger warning is literally there to let people know what triggering content is coming up. The trigger warning should not be there to tell the reader to skip ahead.
In college fifteen years ago, my lit professor would just state ahead of time eg: "Next week in class we will discuss chapters 8-10. These chapters include the author's recollection of their assault, ensuing investigation and descriptions of these events. We will be discussing these topics in class."
Look, I know people LOVE to make fun of "trigger warning" on here, but it DOESN'T MAKE YOU DO ANYTHING. YOU'RE NOT BEING FORCED INTO SOME WEIRD LEFTIST IDEOLOGY. It's literally an FYINRN situation, which is an acronym for "For Your Information, No Response Needed."

Yeah it'd be cool if no response was needed, the problem is, a response is always given, and no one fucking cares. Just another narsy trait of a new generation. They carefully curate information about themselves and expect people to read it and memorize it, and to act accordingly.

OP, are you actually saying that if a friend of yours were sexually assaulted and asked you for help, you would stand there, mouth agape, smoke coming out of one ear, all because you skipped a portion of a training?

R4 No. my point is, why can’t people handle anything anymore?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | December 1, 2024 6:02 PM

No R4 — OP is speculating that if the friend of the Triggered Section Skipper was actually assaulted that TSS would be of no help because they wouldn’t be able to handle it and fall apart.

The same people who complain about trigger warning are the ones who think kids will be traumatized if they read a book with gay characters in it

No r6, read OP again. Hes clearly saying what I said he’s saying. He doesn’t say, you’re too fragile to help. He says, you don’t know what to do to help.
OP is rightwing trolling here, with the flimsiest “evidence” of libtard fragility I’ve ever seen.
The fascists won last month. Can’t they just shut the fuck up and enjoy their ill-gotten gains? Instead of scraping the bottom of the barrel for even more things to complain about?

The same people who complain about trigger warnings are the ones molesting children between the pews while telling everyone that drag queens are the problem.

Threads like these just show how much the brains of white flyovers have been colonized by Fox News and other rightwing agitprop. It’s like their lives are hollow and meaningless unless they have some complaint to voice about how “the liberals are destroying America.” They are like a closed system. There’s no room in their skull for any other thoughts.

I wonder why this thread is so upsetting to people? Do you all really not find it silly that older movies now need to be introduced with someone saying “back then people said mean things sometimes?” Did no one have to survive middle school after the year 2000?

R5 We can't handle anything anymore because we used to not be so connected. We'd go home, be the queen or king of our own world. Who knows what other people did? That was their prerogative.
Now we can't get away even when we're physically away. Texts and socials come through. There's no stopping at the the door. A block, bans, and muted is what it takes to have distance. So people are in the same web, making up new etiquette rules for a new social society.

How did we get here?
A convergence of several factors have made parents generally much more afraid, so have done a lot more to "protect" their children. Unfortunately, since Columbine (1999) this fear and need to "protect" their children has actually robbed those children of mental and emotional growth opportunities to learn how to cope with every day life.
Coupled with increasing stresses and pressures from a highly competitive market to get into even second rate schools and parents stepping in the manage and control that aspect of their children's lives, "normal" parenting has evolved into what most people would have called "helicopter" parenting. Parents recognizing that every grade matters if you want to get into a decent school now fight their children's battles across all aspects of the child's life - school, work (the few who do work), friends.
Multiple studies have shown that "trigger warnings" actually result in the opposite of the intended result. By not having to deal with tough issues, people never develop the resiliency or emotional self-regulation skills to cope with unpleasant topics.

I’m putting OP on ignore because he’s the sane creature who posted this:
[Quote] Why are certain factions of the LGBTQ community so obsessed with “existing?”
[Quote] I hear this buzzword constantly, with these people all the time saying things like “I exist” and “my right to exist” and “I keep having to prove that I exist.”
[Quote] What exactly does this mean? If I can see you and I can hear you talking, clearly you exist.
It’s the Defacto troll. It is the weekend after all. Not worth wasting energy giving this vile troll what it wants. Ignore.

I’m guessing that this thread is full of fragile niggers and beaners and slanties and ragheads who were told how special they are and how their victimhood should be put on a pedestal. And then when they get out into the real world they are shocked that absolutely no one cares.

I think this is the result of multiple generations of Americans (the trend has migrated to other countries, by the way) who have been immersed in pop psychology demonizing old parenting modes. For a good 2 or 3 decades, television and modern media has been inundated with preachers of overprotective parenting techniques that culminated in a generation of young people who are "triggered" by the most inconsequential things. In turn, adults have mirrored this behavior so you have grown-ups who should know better reacting to the most banal situations as if their life was in imminent danger.

I sure as hell prefer today’s trigger warnings to rampant bullying. It doesn’t hurt anyone. Live and let live, for Christ sake.

It hurts those who are paralyzed by the most inane "triggers". It renders them ineffectual and encourages social cowardice and victimhood. It hurts relationships in that they become unbearable to the little butterflies who can't stand any aspect of reality and confuse their own anxiety with PTSD. It promotes mislabeling: anyone in their view is a bully and an abuser under these norms, even those who aren't.

These types of trigger warnings serve people who have a history with trauma. If it's a class where you have no choice, a student can prepare by making an appointment with their therapist, or not plan to celebrate their birthday right after class or whatever. They won't be blindsided. Or if it's something optional, like a movie, they can decide if it's something they still want to see.
I have no problem with supporting people who have PTSD or other struggles related to traumas.

Yep, R35. And the professional victims now self-diagnose with CPTSD. Because they're so much more special than people who suffer from run-of-the-mill PTSD.

When the tough times finally arrive and this period of stability and riches goes away a lot of overly sensitive bitches are not going to make it. They will go under very quickly while the tough fight and scrap for what they need.
The soft the sensitive the easily triggered will not have a chance.
