I had one today and it was delicious, although I love Eastern European food.
Anything involving Russian + food = gross.
Sorry.

R1 You know not what you say. I went to a Russian restaurant in Riga and the €120 black caviar was to die for.

“Fur Coat Salad” is what I’d call my full-frontal nude photospreads in my humor coffee-table pictorial, “Sex.”

Pickled herring + beets + root vegetables in a glistening jellied salad?
I'll pass.

R5 It’s not jellied.

Looks like pink carpet that the dog threw up on after eating a whole carrot.
You tried to clean the carpet with some foamy stuff, but half of the barf sank below the surface where it will stay and begin to rot on top of the foam padding.

I have Russian friends that serve this to me nearly every time I visit them at their house. Shuba, Olivier (Potato salad with bits of bologna mixed in), borscht, sometimes korean carrot salad, which is also a thing for Russians for some reason. I usually bring them homemade bread from my oven. Then they casually bring out trays of cakes and sweets, all served with tea. I will eat what they set in front of me, but I don't rush out to try to imitate the recipes at home.
In spite of a few delicious dishes such as Chicken Kiev, beef Stroganov, and Plov, Russian food is not a cuisine that people from other nations adore.
They use dill in lots of dishes that we wouldn't normally include it in. There is a tasty soupy salad called okroshka, and it's refreshing, but again, not something that I try to emulate at home. The one time, I tried, the Russian people laughed because I didn't mince the vegetables into small enough pieces.

I had this at Kashka, a Russian restaurant considered amongst the best in Portland, OR. It's definitely... different.
