Seriously, why not? I did an internship with the federal government years ago and I had to get fingerprinted and undergo a background investigation, including an interview. All for an internship. They even asked me if I had any ties to terrorist groups or adversarial governments. Why is this not required for the office of the president?
Why aren’t background checks required to run for president?

Because the requirements for President are spelled out in the Constitution. Full stop.

r2 (eldergay63) is correct, but it's still a reasonable question

The framers of The Constitution did say that the public has the right to know the character, and know if the candidate has inappropriate ties to foreign governments. Still, it doesn't seem to fully say to do background checks, but it's reasonable to assume a background check should or could be done, in today's understanding. I wish I could send a link to what I read, but DL won't let me. It's a good question.
It's a good question.
