Why isn't Janis Joplin a gay icon?

I've always wondered why...

Too fugly!

by Anonymousreply 1November 30, 2024 11:17 PM

Not glamorous. We like our Divas glamorous.

by Anonymousreply 2November 30, 2024 11:19 PM

Her shtick was specifically designed to be attractive to straight men. She was not glam enough and did not have a pretty enough voice for the gays.

by Anonymousreply 3November 30, 2024 11:22 PM

She seemed dirty and gross.

by Anonymousreply 4November 30, 2024 11:29 PM

She didn't give a shit what others thought. She was poor white trash, and had fun with it. I agree, OP.

by Anonymousreply 5November 30, 2024 11:30 PM

Too dykey. The most masculine I think the gays will go for a rockstar is someone like Courtney Love, who is still femme but with a masculine swagger. Janis didn’t have a feminine energy at all. I do love her voice though and think she was supremely talented.

by Anonymousreply 6November 30, 2024 11:33 PM

Well she did try to seduce Clive Davis.

by Anonymousreply 7November 30, 2024 11:35 PM

I like her. If that means anything.

by Anonymousreply 8November 30, 2024 11:39 PM

R3, I don't know what you mean with the first sentence.

by Anonymousreply 9December 1, 2024 12:11 AM

Piece of My Heart wouldn't have been the same without her.

by Anonymousreply 10December 1, 2024 12:18 AM

Kinda stinky. I have this on good authority from other telephone operators who worked with her at General Telephone.

by Anonymousreply 11December 1, 2024 12:33 AM

R11, what did they say she smelled like?

by Anonymousreply 12December 1, 2024 1:05 AM

Liquor and BBQ farts

by Anonymousreply 13December 1, 2024 1:06 AM

She was hot even with the bad skin.

by Anonymousreply 14December 1, 2024 1:51 AM

Perfect skin

by Anonymousreply 15December 1, 2024 1:52 AM

Melissa Etheridge did a fantastic cover of Piece of My Heart.

by Anonymousreply 16December 1, 2024 2:20 AM

What was her best song?

by Anonymousreply 17December 1, 2024 2:39 AM

Love her. But I'm a straight woman-- don't know if that makes a difference.

by Anonymousreply 18December 1, 2024 2:41 AM

I loved her when I was very young but r2 is right no glamour. She looked like a bruiser

by Anonymousreply 19December 1, 2024 2:46 AM

[quote]Love her. But I'm a straight woman-- don't know if that makes a difference.

It kinda does R18. I say that with love... but yeah.

by Anonymousreply 20December 1, 2024 2:56 AM

Hard to believe she's been gone 54 years now and that if she (b. 1943) were alive today, she'd be 81.

For perspective, when she died in 1970 at age 27, "54 years ago" was 1916 and someone 81 years old was born in 1889!

by Anonymousreply 21December 1, 2024 2:58 AM

She was pretty tough. She hit Jim Morrison over the head with a bottle of Jack Daniel's for being an asshole. I had read that she had a girlfriend at one point. She was just herself and probably loved who she wanted to.

by Anonymousreply 22December 1, 2024 3:18 AM

r3 She was not attractive to straight men though.

by Anonymousreply 23December 1, 2024 3:39 AM

Who is the new Janis?

by Anonymousreply 24December 1, 2024 4:39 AM

She consistently needed to be hosed down with a garden hose in the front lawn. There was very little appealing about her.

by Anonymousreply 25December 1, 2024 4:46 AM

She was pretty to me.

by Anonymousreply 26December 1, 2024 4:56 AM

Melissa mugged her way through the cover of Piece of My Heart. It completely ruined the song.

by Anonymousreply 27December 1, 2024 5:00 AM

Her lesbian drug friend, Peggy Caserta, who wrote a book about her after her death called "Going Down with Janis" just died last week, age 84. The New York Times ran an obituary about her. (It mentions that besides taking drugs, they hooked up.)

The article wasn't behind a paywall (for me).

Janis was bi, she had lots of girlfriends, both serious ones and casual lovers. Her family were Southern evangelicals though and she had a lot of shame about this subject and didn’t want it publicly known. She made a big deal about publicizing her one night stand with Joe Namath because lesbian rumors were swirling and she wanted it known she fucked manly men.

by Anonymousreply 29December 1, 2024 12:20 PM

[quote]She hit Jim Morrison over the head with a bottle of Jack Daniel's for being an asshole.

Southern Comfort, not Jack.

by Anonymousreply 30December 1, 2024 2:23 PM

Yes, you're right! ⬆️

by Anonymousreply 31December 1, 2024 3:53 PM

Some straight men liked her R23. My dad and my husband both liked her a lot. Especially when she She sang " Take another Little Piece of My Heart", at the Glastonbury concert I think. Or maybe Woodstock. My dad used to day she was sharp.

by Anonymousreply 32December 1, 2024 4:15 PM

Was she a great vocalist?

by Anonymousreply 33December 1, 2024 5:01 PM

Hot body

Butterface only, and that is being generous.

by Anonymousreply 35December 1, 2024 7:22 PM

R35, plastic surgeons say she has a perfect face

by Anonymousreply 36December 1, 2024 7:23 PM

Why do people say she was unattractive?

by Anonymousreply 37December 1, 2024 8:22 PM

That’s just like your opinion, man.

by Anonymousreply 38December 1, 2024 8:28 PM

The Pearl abides.

by Anonymousreply 39December 1, 2024 8:40 PM

Was Janis homophobic?

by Anonymousreply 40December 1, 2024 11:28 PM

Who should play her in a biopic?

by Anonymousreply 41December 2, 2024 2:36 AM

The gays like their icons as either bawdy broads (Bette Midler), fragile and damaged (Judy and Marilyn), or with no Fs left (Cher).

by Anonymousreply 42December 2, 2024 2:42 AM

I figured she was a lesbian icon, no?

by Anonymousreply 43December 2, 2024 4:03 AM

[QUOTE]Her shtick was specifically designed to be attractive to straight men.

Must be why she was nominated "ugliest man on campus" by a bunch of frat boys.

by Anonymousreply 44December 2, 2024 4:18 AM

She was much too coarse. And now I think I will watch the Rose, Fredric Forrest and she are great together.

R21 Wow, my mind is blown! My mom is alive still, born in '41. It's insane to think going back from back then would take you to the 1800's.

by Anonymousreply 45December 2, 2024 6:02 AM

She had great taste in music and the charisma to make her act work.

There a was a desperation to her voice that I think worked in context.

She had a cute body (see R4) and little/big sister looks. She looked familial.

I confess I'm not a huge fan of her sound but she was definitely an icon.

by Anonymousreply 46December 2, 2024 6:26 AM

She was the Martha Plimpton of music, for better and for worse.

by Anonymousreply 47December 2, 2024 6:26 AM

I honestly think Jane Krakowski as Jenna Maroney as Janie Jimpler is a bigger gay icon.

Love her hair style.

by Anonymousreply 49December 2, 2024 5:25 PM

[quote]Who should play her in a biopic?

Nicole Kidman

by Anonymousreply 50December 2, 2024 6:10 PM

^ No, John Goodman

by Anonymousreply 51December 2, 2024 7:09 PM

Cynthia Erivo.

by Anonymousreply 52December 2, 2024 7:11 PM

Why should she be a gay icon? Because she was a suicidal, alcoholic, drug junkie with a growly voice? Is that what we admire now?

by Anonymousreply 53December 2, 2024 8:03 PM

She was never suicidal

by Anonymousreply 54December 2, 2024 8:31 PM

Now??? R53 are you lost?

by Anonymousreply 55December 2, 2024 10:40 PM

Janis was a happy drunk who partied too hard, not a tragic case.

by Anonymousreply 56December 2, 2024 10:44 PM

The thought that Janis Joplin was suicidal means that the person has seen The Rose and thought it was an actual bio.

by Anonymousreply 57December 2, 2024 11:14 PM

R57, it was

by Anonymousreply 58December 3, 2024 5:34 PM

Too messy and obnoxious.

She was a trashy heroin addict.

I still get sad about this clip. Swanson was so kind and dignified and Joplin was a sloppy mess who died within the year. The audience was disrespectful.

by Anonymousreply 61December 3, 2024 6:29 PM

Cavett appearance

by Anonymousreply 62December 3, 2024 6:30 PM

She was more of a lesbian icon.

by Anonymousreply 63December 3, 2024 6:37 PM

Her pussy smelled like someone else's pussy.

by Anonymousreply 64December 3, 2024 6:38 PM

A dykon

by Anonymousreply 65December 3, 2024 7:18 PM

Because she was fugly and messy. You're only allowed to be messy as a rock star if you're hot.
