I think it would be Marsha P. Johnson, Harvey Milk, Judy Garland (I read "The Season: A Candid Look at Broadway" and holy crap did the gays love her), and Matthew Shepard
Who do you think would be on the gay and lesbian Mount Rushmore?
by Anonymous | reply 73 | December 2, 2024 11:46 PM |
Perhaps some non-victims?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | November 30, 2024 11:53 PM |
Harvey Milk, James Baldwin, Jodie Foster, Alice Walker, RuPaul

A *gay* Mt. Rushmore? Why, perish the thought!

[quote]Marsha P. Johnson
For Christ's sake, why? She wasn't the first person to throw a brick at Stonewall.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 1, 2024 12:39 AM |
I understand that Marsha P. Johnson was not there (or may not have been there) the first night of Stonewall. But I think it's farily corroborated that she came the second night and fought.
That's why, R7.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 1, 2024 12:44 AM |
Harvey Milk deserves to be on there.
No people who are famous JUST for being victims. I don't say that to deny their importance. But Matthew Shepard is not who I'd want to see on a gay Mount Rushmore.
And, I'm sorry, but listing Marsha P. Johnson as the first suggestion, and more importantly, pretending to act surprised that the gays loved Judy Garland is screaming troll to me. Is AcrylicDesires another teacake name?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 1, 2024 12:47 AM |
I have no idea who Teacake is, R9.
But I do think that someone from Stonewall ought to be on it. And Marsha P. Johnson showed up during the riot and fought. Maybe you are this Teacake for hating on someone who did more than type from their keyboard.

I'll give some more serious answers, although I'm not sure the question merits it. Walt Whitman, Susan B. Anthony, Harry Hay, and Gertrude Stein.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 1, 2024 1:44 AM |
Walt Whitman? Closeted gays are allowed on Rushmore?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 1, 2024 1:47 AM |
I would never describe Walt Whitman as closeted, since his homosexual imagery is so explicit for the historical period. But it's true that he denied at some point that he slept with men. There was no safe way for a man to proclaim to the world at that time in history that he was interested in sleeping with other men, but his poetry virtually shouts it and gave generations that followed a template for using artistic expression to express sexuality.

Have it be a spectrum ordered from gay to lesbian and have the bi/pan/ace in the center. Perhaps each one is a different color like the rainbow flag.

R21 I'd suggest we save Rock to replace the Statue of Liberty. We'll make him twice as tall, and he can be like the Colossus of Rhodes. People will be able to walk under his spread legs and check out the anatomically-correct rendering.

I suppose Milk would be the most obvious.
Seems like the namesake for Obergefell v Hodges, James "Jim" Obergefell, might be worth considering.
How about Larry Kramer who co-founded Act-Up.
Alan Turing? I know some queen has decided that victims should not be included, but he was famous for other things besides being a victim.
From professional sports, where blazing a trail was extremely difficult, Bill Tilden was openly gay. But, I think David Kopay might be a better choice since he played in the NFL. Martain Navratilova would be a better choice than Billie Jean King.
Then again, we really would only need to fill 1 or 2 spots on Mount Rushmore for a Gay Rushmore, given what has come out about Lincoln, Washington, and some questionable passages regarding Jefferson and Bob Hemings.
