Molly Shannon

After her father killed her mother, sister, and cousin while driving drunk, she was raised by an old spinster aunt who sent her to private Catholic school. She left Cleveland for New York, where she worked as a hostess and acted in low budget horror films.

Then, at aged 30 she became a household name when she landed Saturday Night Live. There, she hilariously deglamorized herself while playing the likes of Courtney Love, Monica Lewinsky, Mary Catherine Gallagher, or Sally O'Malley.

Since leaving SNL, she continues to work in showbusiness, with one hilarious role after another.

Molly Shannon jumping out of Jack's bed in the middle of the night is one of the funniest things ever captured on television.

Naturally beautiful

Supremely talented

No onset dramas

A stable personal life

What more can be said? She is a 10/10 across the board.

by Anonymousreply 2November 30, 2024 7:32 PM

The Other Two was a brilliant show.

by Anonymousreply 3November 30, 2024 7:32 PM

If you haven’t listened to Anderson Cooper’s podcast on grief, her episode is a great introduction.

Agreed, r2. I watched I Love That For You and Divorce just to see her. She's a ray of sunshine.

Hilarious, and very sweet. I was at a private function recently where she spoke. She was so funny, and every single person couldn't get over how gracious she was.

by Anonymousreply 7November 30, 2024 7:42 PM

Love her!

by Anonymousreply 8November 30, 2024 7:44 PM

Her dad's alcoholism was a factor in the crash OP mentioned. She later learned he was closeted and it helped her understand his addiction: "So of course you’re going to drink. Imagine if you couldn’t be who you were sexually. It’s horrible."

[quote]Shannon told NPR that she then asked him when he first knew he was gay.

[quote]"And he’s like, oh, Molly, I knew in grade school. I’d go on double dates, and I would look at the boy. And I liked this one boy who was from Poland, and I liked the way his hand held a cigarette. He looked so manly," Shannon said. "And I would look at the J.C. Penney catalogs and see the macho men in their undershirts."

[quote]He told his daughter that he had sexual encounters with men on sales trips and at truck stops.

[quote]"And I was happy for him," Shannon told NPR. "And it was such an honor that he came out to me. And I think it was a relief for him to be able to tell me."

Well, that's tragic. She's done very well for herself, though.

by Anonymousreply 10November 30, 2024 8:01 PM

She was great as the bitchy New England WASP in White Lotus

by Anonymousreply 11November 30, 2024 8:02 PM

Her book is hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 12November 30, 2024 8:08 PM

I loved her in the Seinfeld episode where she doesn't move her arms when she walks.

"Everyone told me what a catty shrew you are, Elaine."

"

by Anonymousreply 13November 30, 2024 8:10 PM

R13 That episode was hilarious and I loved the scene of Elaine playing the crazy phone message that Molly's character left her.

by Anonymousreply 14November 30, 2024 8:26 PM

I think Mary Catherine Gallagher was what she was probably like in Catholic school, sniffing armpits and all.

by Anonymousreply 15November 30, 2024 8:34 PM

Her book is one of my favorite SNL autobiographies and I've read them all

by Anonymousreply 16November 30, 2024 8:36 PM

I liked her on Enlightened.

by Anonymousreply 17November 30, 2024 8:48 PM

You just smile when you see her on the screen

by Anonymousreply 18November 30, 2024 9:15 PM

She was funny on Sex and the City with Amy Sedaris

by Anonymousreply 19November 30, 2024 9:16 PM

R2 Beautiful? She certainly isn’t bad looking but beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 20November 30, 2024 9:18 PM

She’s immensely funny and instantly likable.

Did anyone see her as the dying mother in the gay dramedy Other People with Jesse Plemons? It’s good.

Yeah, r21. I liked that movie but it was pretty sad. She's great in everything.

by Anonymousreply 22November 30, 2024 9:30 PM

R21 I thought her performance in Other People was Oscar worthy. I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I cried after the scene where Molly's character visits the school she taught at and basically says goodbye to her colleagues and leaves the gifts behind for her students.

by Anonymousreply 23November 30, 2024 9:34 PM

I know Mary Katherine Gallagher grated on a lot of people’s nerves, but it shouldn’t deter detractors from the rest of her work. She was terrific on the latest season of “Only Murders…” as the high-strung movie producer. When she blended red bull and beef jerky sticks like it was nothing for her pick-me-up, it was a hoot.

by Anonymousreply 24November 30, 2024 9:40 PM

Her autobiography is amazing. The content is unbelievably grim and sad. But she somehow makes it into something worth celebrating.

by Anonymousreply 25November 30, 2024 9:58 PM

Never knew the backstory, but you can tell she copes with comedy and usually does it pretty well.

by Anonymousreply 26November 30, 2024 10:02 PM

[quote]He told his daughter that he had sexual encounters with men on sales trips and at truck stops.

Where's the requisite: "Molly Shannon's dad -- who's had him?"

by Anonymousreply 27November 30, 2024 10:31 PM

Is she a gay icon?

by Anonymousreply 28November 30, 2024 10:48 PM

Molly's dad? No.

Molly? No. Liked by many, loved by some, iconic by none.

by Anonymousreply 29November 30, 2024 10:49 PM

Still kicking ass at 50!

R30 I’M 50! 50 YEARS OLD!

by Anonymousreply 36December 1, 2024 3:08 AM

She IS Molly Shannon.

by Anonymousreply 37December 1, 2024 3:35 AM

I can't get enough of her. So fun.

by Anonymousreply 38December 1, 2024 3:40 AM

r7 I know a couple of people who met Molly Shannon and they both said she's lovely.

by Anonymousreply 39December 1, 2024 3:50 AM

I was so shocked when she passed. She hid it for a long time.

by Anonymousreply 40December 1, 2024 4:11 AM

^ Say what?

by Anonymousreply 41December 1, 2024 4:13 AM

R39 you beat me to it!

by Anonymousreply 42December 1, 2024 4:14 AM

Her book is very interesting.

I think she is really a person that seems to be genuinely nice, or at least not a cynical person. There's an innocence that is unusual in someone her age.

by Anonymousreply 43December 1, 2024 4:17 AM

R41 Ignore it - one of those “I’m desperate for any kind of attention” things

by Anonymousreply 44December 1, 2024 4:26 AM

Yet unfunny cunts like Ellen got so far ahead.

by Anonymousreply 45December 1, 2024 4:54 AM

She is like an endless fountain of creative juice; the way she can sustain a character in a scene is just incredible. The scene on the airplane in "The Other Two" where she confessed how her husband actually died was heartbreaking, I bawled. I've been through early life trauma like her, and i can see how she directs all that tough stuff into her performances.

by Anonymousreply 46December 1, 2024 9:21 AM

Rumor has it that she had a very nasty yeast infection the entire run of SNL. Lorne used to ask her “Hey Molly, what’s cooking?” She would always reply, “A loaf of pussynickle.”

by Anonymousreply 47December 1, 2024 9:44 AM

It was a small part, but she was wonderful in The Little Hours. She had great chemistry with John C. O'Reilly and she brought such a sense of sadness & loneliness to the role. I wanted that movie to end with those two crazy kids leaving their religious orders and running off together.

by Anonymousreply 48December 1, 2024 11:13 AM

She’s fantastic in everything and never disappoints. She should have been Oscar nominated for Other People.

Here’s her acceptance speech from the Independent Spirit Awards. Love her.

I think she's tremendous!

I also think she's incredibly talented at both comedy and drama.

I **do** think she's best showcased by the work of someone like Mike White who really gets the sad and melancholy nuances in her comic work, or knows the sadness underneath.
