1980s TV: Pat solutions for serious problems
I'm thinking of Mrs. Garrett's advice on the subject of teen suicide: "Girls when you feel you're getting to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on". Or Ann Romano telling Alex to "just get over the fence". Or however she put it.
Clearly, this era was earnest about tackling these social issues, with their very special episodes. But why were their actual prescriptions for social ills so uniquely unserious?

I don't know, OP. Maybe you should start a blog about this.

Why the hell would you go to Ann Romano when feeling suicidal, unless the goal is to end things quicker?
She’d slap you; start screaming at you about how this is HER problem, not yours; then finish with some mawkish monologue transparently written to try to get an Emmy for that evil ginger dwarf.

[quote] Or Ann Romano telling Alex to "just get over the fence".
And then I end up paying the price for her useless pep talks.
