Annual unwanted gifts
It's that time of year again, folks ...
My cousin is quite pleased with herself about something she is certain my mother will like. But no, in reality it's a waste of money on her part as she's sent the same thing for a couple of years already. Another relative sends a magazine subscription that isn't really my mom's thing.
Do you all accept these graciously, and move on? Or, find a tactful way of hinting it might be better to choose something else? My mother is not an ingrate, realizing they have gone through thought and expense on her behalf.

What is wrong with you, posting on your mommy's behalf?
You say thank you. You do what you want with the gift. It's been settled for centuries, drab.

Just give copious amounts of pot, silly.

If you don't need the magazines, just drop them off at a senior center, or library. They will take them. As for the gift - drop it off at Savers.
Problem solved.

An Indian friend gave me a gold-colored heavy statue of Krishna and his flute - it was so gaudy. He told me how beautiful it was and that I should display it on my table in my entryway so everyone could see it when they came in my house first thing. I admit, I just donated it to Goodwill.

I once told my sister-in-law that I liked that old-fashioned ribbon candy as a kid. Now she buys it for me for Christmas every year. It's always stale and ends up in the trash.

Look on the bright side R6 - at least he didn’t take it back!
I’ll show myself out.

Sheesh, r9. Not only a bad and borderline offensive joke, you've got the wrong kind of Indian. Krishna means dot, not feather.
...and Oh Pee? R1 got it right. You say "thanks" and move on.

"Do you all accept these graciously, and move on?"
Yes, because I'm not trash like you, OP. You are mocked.

I think this happens a lot, it’s ok. After you graciously accept a gift you can do whatever you want with it. i would not try to find a “tactful” way to tell someone to give better gifts.
Christmas feels so sad and wasteful; I love Christmas lights and music and Midnight Mass but the gift part is so often needless waste.
Last year I told Datalounge I was going to grow avocado trees for Christmas gifts this year and I actually did! Working on painting terracotta pots that the trees will go in. I have about 25 people (neighbors, teachers, etc.) that I buy a small gift for every year; this year theyre all getting an avocado trees and a gift card.

R12 A tree is a great gift in itself put if it pleases you to also give a gift card I'm sure they'll appreciate it.

Teenage pregnancy is a very common unwanted gift at Christmas time. It must have something to do with Santa’s big red sack and a lot of ho ho ho-ing

I wouldn't hurt someone's feelings over a gift. Accept it with appreciation and if you don't want it then donate it to somebody who use it.

I say thanks and leave it at the nearest bus stop.
