Back in the day, Whoopi Goldberg used to make all kinds of good movies like Jumpin Jack Flash and Ghost and Made in America and so on. There were movies like Back to the Future and the like. These were original stories that were highly entertaining and fun. These days almost everything is a remake of a reboot. What happened?
Whatever happened to good movies with original storylines?

They're all being made into streaming television series.

No one under 40 knows how to do much of anything.
Blame the parents who threatened to sue if their child didn't get an A.

Think of the actors we had in their prime: Hoffman, DeNiro, Pacino, Redford, Hackman, Duvall, Newman, Nicholson, Cruise, Hanks
Now we have Timothee Chalamet, Barry Keoghan, and a bunch of Marvel actors.

It also doesn’t help that DEI is now forced into every movie. Think back to Jumpin Jack Flash in 1986. Whoopi was in the starring role in an original storyline, and that character didn’t have to be a black woman, it could have been any kind of woman, but Whoopi got the part and she was perfect for it. In my opinion, that is the perfect way to cast people of color. But instead they just keep remaking old movies with black actors and shoehorning racial issues into the story.

I agree with OP.
There aren't near as many interesting movies with original storylines.
Everything is a remake or part of some series.
And Jumpin' Jack Flash was a hell of a lot of fun.

Too many unnecessary remakes, sequels, CGI, superheroes. Maybe if they start telling adult stories that adults want to watch, instead of catering to 15-year-old Chinese and Indian boys, we might get some good movies again.

When I was a little boy growing up in Bulgaria, which is the worst by the way, poor people everywhere and cabbage is constantly cooking, there was this woman who was kicked out of her house. She lost all her money and couldn’t even sell her body, so she became a clown on the streets. She would perform all her tricks standing in mud and would just cry and cry.

R10, that already sounds like a much better movie than most of what we get these days!!!!

I have my Mom here for a few days and it was hard to find a feel good movie for adults that wasn't horror or superhero, ended up watching While You Were Sleeping (from 1995). I had already seen it but Mom liked it.

I wonder if a lot of writers and directors are starting to find a 1:30 to 2:00-hour film "too limiting" to fully tell their story?

Screenwriters have forgotten how to tell a story.
