Because Da’vine Joy Randolph became the clear frontrunner for Best Supporting Actress. With one actor of color certain to win one category, Oscar voters felt free to vote for whom they liked the best for Lead Actress, Emma Stone. As long as ONE actor of color wins an Oscar, no one complains and accuses Hollywood of being institutionally racist.

The last time all four Oscar acting winners were white, you know what won Best Picture? “Parasite.” Choosing Parasite was the Academy’s Get Out of Jail free card on the racism question. “1917” was expected to win.
