My cousin (early 40s) and 3 of his kids (8 to 11 years old) say they have it.
My parents got vaxxed but say their 80 something neighbors have it.
Is walking pneumonia so common now that pre teens and 80-somethings get it?

I read an article last week (can't recall where) that said walking pneumonia was seeing a surge this year.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | November 28, 2024 1:24 AM |
how does it differ from "regular" pneumonia?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | November 28, 2024 1:26 AM |
"Walking" pneumonia is the same thing as "regular." It's just that the symptoms are milder, allowing you to be up and about. Left untreated, it can cause very serious problems.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | November 28, 2024 1:31 AM |
My dad had it a couple of months ago. My friend from the atheists' group has it now.
Just some anecdotal evidence.

7 years ago (at age 48) I got pneumonia and I woke up in the middle of night feeling like I was drowning. I had to call a friend to take me to the ER.
They called it "community-acquired pneumonia" because a fuck buddy had it before I developed it.

The Wall Street Journal had and article about it on Nov. 5th.
Cases of walking pneumonia are up across all age groups, with children 17 and under experiencing the largest rise, says Edens.
Symptoms of the respiratory illness caused by mycoplasma pneumoniae can include cough, fever and a sore throat, say doctors. If the bacteria damages the throat and lungs, the result can be a less severe form of pneumonia.
Someone with typical pneumonia feels ill enough to stay home in bed, but if you have walking pneumonia, it might take an X-ray of your lungs to reveal significant infection, says Edens.

WSJ:
Mycoplasma pneumoniae isn’t as infectious as Covid-19 or measles, which spread more easily through the air. And the incubation period—the time between your first exposure and when your symptoms show up—can be relatively long, at one to four weeks.
“If you have passing contact, you’re not likely to get it,” says Snyder. “It’s really something that transmits effectively when people are in close contact, in households or schools or college dorms.”

So if we run fast enough, it won't catch us?

When fans come at me wheezing and coughing like some zombie apocalypto I tell them to walk on by and spray them with mace.
I myself have had no such issues since I had my lungs made portable so Damont can take them to the carwash and srub them up some.

Very funny, OP.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 28, 2024 4:17 AM |
I think I might have it. I've had chest pain, cough, shortness of breath since Sunday. Saw the doctor who gave me antibiotics and sent me for a chest X-ray, the results of which are still out.

Everyone's smoking something these days be it a vape, weed, cigs, dope plus breathing in all these chemicals in the air and long COVID is a recipe for this shit.

I hope you get diagnosed and treated, r17.
Waking up when you feel like you're drowning in liquid is an awful feeling. second to feeling life I was dying.

I’m in healthcare.
We’re seeing a lot more Flu coming in ER.
Because more people are not getting vaccinated!!!!!! And it will just get worse with the anti vaxxers trump is putting in his cabinet.😡😡😡

I'm a little bit noisy wheezing with a bit of mucus. But I have been laying down while working for the last day and a half.
I am hoping this is nothing. But i'm the poster that had pneumonia in 2017 and since then, tend to get respiratory illnesses despite vaccinations.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | November 28, 2024 7:47 AM |
R20, let's not forget about the covid vaccine debacle (untested and no proof that it did anything) and the lies Fauci and the media told to the public about the vaccine and covid in general.

Heard something was going around. I was a little run down for a day or two then stuck with a nighttime cough + a tiny bit of congestion for over a week! Allergies?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | November 28, 2024 2:14 PM |
I think that is what I've been suffering from. It started 3 weeks ago. I began having major trouble getting oxygen and couldn't breathe deep at all. My lungs were full of mucus. I started taking anti-mucus pills daily and after a couple days I began to have some relief. I'm better now, but I still have periods, mainly first thing in the morning, when I'm hacking up gobs of mucus.
I'll be honest, I'm 71 years old and there were a few days when I thought this may be the beginning of the end for me. Laying in bed at night gasping for air is a quite scary thing.

Walking pneumonia is another term for atypical, i.e., non-bacterial, pneumonia. It’s caused by viruses, fungi, and protozoae.
Walking pneumonia in older people is usually RSV. Get a vaccine.
Mycoplasma pneumonia affects mostly younger people and the principal symptom is rash.
Walking pneumonia rarely causes productive coughs. A lot of people with bronchitis seem to self diagnose as walking pneumonia.

I want to but they won't give it to me! My doc said I have to be 70.

I once, in the course of research, had a nurse tell me, "It ain't the old timer's that gets them. It's the ammonia!"
Not that this contributes to the serious questions raised on the matter at hand: the OP's sanity.

I remember when I had my store in the early 90s, I hired someone who seemed like a very nice Asian American woman whose husband was a big banker and she wanted a PT job. She turned out to be the most self-absorbed woman I ever met. At least every other week she would come to work and say she had walking pneumonia. It got tiring. I asked if she was diagnosed with this and she said she never went to her doctor - she just 'knew'. She used to tell our customers she had it and they would respond, "AGAIN ?" She needed a lot of attention. I was thrilled when she told me her husband got her a job in the bank he worked in FT - I couldn't wait for her last day.

A lot of the older women (35+) in my Midwest city have come down with waddling pneumonia.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | November 29, 2024 12:55 AM |
I'm 61, and I had to fight to get the RSV vaccine this year. I had to tell them my doctor ordered it due to another medical problem. (My doctor recommended it, but didn't order it.) The pharmacist was actually calling my doctor's office to verify my medical problem when the manager told her to take my word for it. It was a huge hassle, and I wouldn't have gotten the shot if I hadn't been so determined.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | November 29, 2024 3:32 AM |
If you have pneumonia you don't do much walking.

by Anonymous | reply 43 | November 29, 2024 3:54 AM |
That's strange, R41 - I didn't have any problem at all getting my RSV shot at Kroger pharmacy. Yes, I go to my local Kroger pharmacy. Much better service and friendlier that CVS or Walgreens.. The pharmacist knows me by name now.
My granddaughter had parainfluenza a few weeks back and had to go to emergency twice. She sounded like she had smoker's cough too. Croup, wheezing, stridor, etc. Now my son and daughter-in-law both have strep. All with breathing difficulties. Ugh.
