Contemporary Art is usually dated as Post World WWII so not all 20th Century artists qualify. But the avant-garde such as Dadaists qualify, in my estimation. I give you Marcel Duchamp. I think he's swell but I know the common critique is that readymades are not creative and not really art. Of course this is one gesture that started Contemporary Art. Fountain is from 1917. Maurizio Cattelan's 2019 "Comedian" - a fresh banana duck-taped to a wall - and which sold on 20 November 2024 for $5,200,000, isn't any improvement on Duchamp's century old Fountain.
Contemporary Artists you absolutely cannot abide.

^Damien Hirst...yeah, he was the first one who came to my mind as well. But I will admit that I don't much care for most contemporary art in general.

J. Seward Johnson who, sadly for treacle-loving mayor's and parks administrators everywhere, has been dead only 4 years.

yeah J Seward Johnson sculpture is mostly quite awful. There are a couple I don't mind.

Basquiat. The whole over-the-top adulation of him in the art world feels gimmicky and self-congratulatory.

Basquiat is one of the few who was worthy of the hype. His paintings are bursting with energy.

Obviously this is all opinion so I'll listen to others. I think some Basquiat is very good.
