US universities warn foreign students on Trump immigration crackdown
US universities have been emailing international students and staff advising them to return to campus before President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January, amid concerns over his plans for mass deportations.
"All international students are worried right now," University of Colorado Denver professor Chloe East told the BBC.
Trump, a Republican, has pledged to enact the largest deportation operation in history, and use the US military to help.
More than 400,000 undocumented students are enrolled in US higher education, according to the Higher Ed Immigration Portal.
Officials in Trump's incoming administration have suggested they will build vast holding facilities for undocumented immigrants on the deportation list.
His incoming border tsar Tom Homan has said violent criminals and national security threats will take priority for removal from the country. But that has not allayed concerns in higher education.

I don't understand. Please explain? If these students are enrolled in accredited US university, how on earth can they be "undocumented"!?
"More than 400,000 undocumented students are enrolled in US higher education, according to the Higher Ed Immigration Portal."
I can see undocumented people who LIVE in American being enrolled at universities. Grew up in USA and are undocumented. Sure. But they are NOT "international students".
"International Students" are cash cows - students from other countries who come to USA to get their university diplomas. They are ALL documented with student visas.
Aren't they?

I believe a large number of those "international students" might be here learning English for a semester or two. But they would be documented. I think the problem would be students (mainly Latino students) who are not citizens. However, the latino vote supported most of what they are complaining about now.

I thought all these “undocumented immigrants” were here doing jobs that Americans don’t want, like cleaning houses and working in fields? Why are 400,000 of them in our universities now?

As I said, there may be hundreds of thousands of kids who grew up in America, and undocumented, who now study at universities. But these are NOT "international students".

International students are documented. The end.
The most common student visas are F-1 and M-1.
F-1 visas are for full-time international students pursuing academic studies.
M-1 visas are for full-time international students pursuing vocational studies.

r2 Pretty much. For UK and I expect most places tbh large number of Chinese and Indian students, with Nigeria in 3rd place. The unis love them because they can charge international students higher fees.

R10 none of those students are "undocumented". They must have visas to enrol at legit universities.

I’m sure there are universities who are willing to “bend the rules” for Chinese or Indians or Middle Eastern students who can pay cash.

They are enrolling international students who only have tourist visas? Visa waver (eg no visa) applies to visitors from Qatar and Israel, ONLY, in Middle East. Tourist visas are 90 days.

r11 Didn't see the undocumented bit so fair point. Then no. I've never heard of many actually undocumented students. The main issue with international students (at least in the UK) is the end up overstaying their visa and straight up disappearing, or they'll actually be attending quite dodgy English language college run by Someone's Cousin as a way to get a backdoor visa and work.

Do American universities ask for proof of citizenship today? They did not in my day.
If they are illegal or undocumented they are on the short list for a govt paid ticket out of the country.

Undocumented immigrants get financial aid and being a first generation college student is a big boost in the admissions process.

Mostly blue states , inc mine, plus Texas.

I’m guessing this group of 400,000 includes quite a few young adults who have been in the U.S. a very long time. I don’t want to see then deported, but the fact that there is even a remote possibility demonstrates how unethical the US has been for so many years by allowing people to work jobs, attend public schools, be admitted to public and private universities (which are all funded or subsidized by taxpayers to some degree), and get healthcare while still having the specter of “illegal” hanging over them.
I hope people understand that we’ve created a responsibility to these young people and their parents. I suspect we will see mass deportations of less appealing immigrants but eventually see measures adopted to allow people to remain, hopefully fully legally with a path to citizenship. The schools ought to be ready to step up, too. You admitted them and gave them aid packages, diverting resources that could have educated tax paying US citizens, knowing they were here illegally. Now how are you going to ensure they can finish the education you encouraged them to commit to?

Yes, I believe there are 400K. It's not just Mexicans or Central Americans, but people from Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and African countries, etc., who overstay their VISAs and never leave. If you live in the NY, NJ, or DC areas this is quite common.

It does not seem to be those that came in legally and then over stayed their visa that account for the big numbers.. it’s those who live in the US and are undocumented that make up the bulk of those 408,000.

R40, people do know it because they get really worked up about the college admissions process and the “three ins” or whatever they call them. Athlete, legacy, first generation. First generation college students are largely kids who are undocumented or whose parents are undocumented. Obviously the citizens with undocumented parents are not part of the 400,000. I have no idea what that breakdown would be.

Need Blind doesn’t mean you get to go for free. They cobble together various student loan programs and such to allow you to afford it. Most of that money would be federal student loan, which illegals cannot access

If once is 18-25 year old who grew up in the USA and is undocumented and is now going to college - how is "returning to campus before Trump takes power" going to help you? R46 I didn't say Community Colleges are dirt cheap but they tend to be the lower cost options and in some states they have radically reduced tuition in recent years..
And yes, struggling poor students need loans even for community college.
Very few students are in the category of POOR yet high achievers, who can get the full rides available from well endowed private colleges, or the few full scholarships available at routine public colleges.
