Courtney Love asked PJ Harvey to play on her new album and got no response

Longtime PJ fan Courtney is not happy. PJ is serving radio silence, of course.

Smart lady, that PJ Harvey.

by Anonymousreply 1November 27, 2024 1:36 AM

That is rude. I fucking love Courtney, I have all her albums. PJ...I don't have anything of hers. I'm sure "Nobody's Daughter" is more recent than any PJ stuff.

by Anonymousreply 2November 27, 2024 1:46 AM

I love both of them as well.

I wonder why P.J. put Courtney on ignore?

by Anonymousreply 3November 27, 2024 1:51 AM

Fuck that brain damaged Kurt killing twat

PJ is a true artist, not a stealing grasping cunt like Courtney Love is. No one is obligated to respond to anything. Courtney sounds like a fat fem Asian on Grindr

I love them both, but Polly was probably wise to avoid Courtney, who can be a messy bitch and a lot.

I love Courtney and Hole is my all-time favorite band to this day. I appreciate her reckless, unfiltered dumpster fire persona. She is a true rock and roll bitch and she is talented despite what her detractors say.

The reality is that PJ is a much more disciplined and focused person who has transitioned into a more refined artist as the years have gone on. Courtney is not and never will be that, and I think she knows it. She has always sung PJ’s praises, going back to the early ‘90s.

Courtney clearly took the lack of response personally and shouldn’t have, but the fact that she talks about it publicly like this is part of what I like about her. She is a flawed person with a limited sense of self-awareness, but she doesn’t put on airs that would suggest otherwise. We don’t get enough candor from celebrities these days, so I appreciate the fact that Courtney lets us know what’s on her mind, for better or worse.

You are pathetic

by Anonymousreply 7November 27, 2024 2:14 AM

R7 wow, truly thought-provoking

by Anonymousreply 8November 27, 2024 2:19 AM

I’ve met Courtney, & while she’s nutty, or at least was when I met her, she’s also the type of person who seems to be a blast, in a good way.

by Anonymousreply 9November 27, 2024 2:21 AM

Great contribution R7. If you hate Courtney, why are you here?

R6 Yes, she's a true rock and roll bitch, it's great. Now it's all turned into loser dust.

One of these performers is light years ahead of the other.

I’m on Datalounge because I have oceans of rage and hate…like EVERYONE here r10

Are you new here ?

by Anonymousreply 12November 27, 2024 3:08 AM

R11 we all know PJ is an accomplished artiste. I would never take that away from her. But Courtney’s also given us four great albums and three plus decades of utterly deranged pop culture moments.

Both women embody starkly different archetypes. In the context of a high school classroom, PJ would be the brainy, arty, perfectionistic student who writes poetry and carries around a hardbound notebook with a fine-tip pen. Courtney would be the chubby goth girl from a broken home who is screechy and extremely insecure despite exhibiting obnoxious displays of brassiness. She’s intelligent, but not remotely as in control of her primal impulses.

What does Courtney Love have to offer PJ Harvey, though? The former doesn't have anything that the latter needs. She is uninteresting to her as a collaborator and likely uninspiring to her as a performer. I can see it: their sensibilities are completely different, both artistically and temperamentally. Blabbing in public about her "rejection" by a superior artist shows poor judgment on Love's part and may have only confirmed for Harvey that she made the right decision. Harvey has collaborated successfully with other artists: Nick Cave, Marianne Faithfull, John Parish, Thom Yorke, Tricky. They enriched her work and she enriched theirs (with apologies to that old Judy Garland post on DL). Can you picture any of *them* working with Courtney Love? She has a history of pursuing far more talented people than her; this is nothing new.

PJ Harvey has reinvented herself virtuallly with every new album, something CL always lacked the talent or imagination to do. Harvey released an epic poem two years ago ("Olam"), for which she was inspired by the rituals, children’s songs, chants, and superstitions of the rural West Country in England, where she grew up. She made "The Hope Six Demolition Project" after traveling through Kosovo and Afghanistan, accompanied by a documentary film. Around the same time, Courtney Love was getting facial fillers and "lip enhancements" in Dubai. Different stratospheres.

R14 I see what you're saying, but to be fair, Courtney did reinvent herself a bit between albums. "Pretty on the Inside" is a macabre art punk album that is markedly different from "Live Through This", and "Celebrity Skin" is significantly more poppy than either of them; it almost sounds like it could have been written and sung by a different person.

That being said, PJ has really built an eclectic and large body of work that Courtney was simply never built to do, which I think is partly due to a mixture of talent and a solid work ethic. I think PJ grew up on a farm, and I suspect she approaches her art with a pragmatism that echoes that sort of lifestyle. She has a clear vision, and she puts in the hours.

Courtney, on the other hand, was a troubled, emancipated trust fund kid-turned-stripper who spent her late teens and early twenties slingshotting herself around the world, stalking new wave musicians, and shaking her tits onstage for cash. Innately, she is a much different archetype of a person. I think inherent mental issues, lack of focus and discipline, drug use, and general paranoia/neurosis have all contributed to the woes that have followed her through her life. Still, I think she is very intelligent. I am sure PJ has her own problems too, but she is poised and mentally coherent enough to know that blabbing about them to the press is kind of ridiculous.

Taylor is more her speed:

R17 that's funny considering a few months ago Courtney was sounding off about how Taylor was "not important" as an artist (which is sort of true).

by Anonymousreply 18November 27, 2024 8:16 PM

She should go for Chappel Roan.

by Anonymousreply 19November 27, 2024 11:21 PM

One of the most discreet people in popular music versus one of the most indiscreet. It was never going to work!

You could easily make the same argument about Courtney. She wasn’t at the forefront of the riot girl movement, she just became more famous than, for example, Bikini Kill and Kathleen Hanna. And that’s only because Courtney was married to Kurt Cobain. (Who, ironically, was roommates with and a friend of Kathleen Hanna’s before he hooked up with Courtney. So, out of jealousy, Courtney punched Kathleen Hanna in the face once, but I digress.)
