Wicked will probably be a significant Oscar winner due to lack of major competition

I agree it is now the favorite for Best Picture and the two actresses

Director I think they will go with Brady Corbett for The Brutalist because he is a former actor and I remember how Rob Marshall was snubbed for Roman Polanski (oddly also for a film about a Holocaust survivor played by Adrien Brody)

Below the line: Art Direction, Costumes, Hair & Makeup, Sound, and Visual Effects are probably guaranteed.

I'm betting Winnie Holzmann has a good shot at Best Adapted Screenplay as well.

And if they don't win for Art Direction, Costumes, and Sound, there is no justice.

I don't think Jon Chu will even get nominated for Best Director. The director's branch is a tougher, artsier crowd to impress. (See: Gerwig's lack of a nomination for "Barbie.")

I could see "Wicked" pulling an "Argo" (or a "CODA" or a "Green Book") and win Best Picture even without a Best Director nod.

It will be the "Barbie" of the 2025 Academy Awards.

All HYPE and then get SNUBBED.

That will be fucking hilarious!!!

Barbie was a metatextual satire. Wicked is a very traditional studio musical. Remember Steven Spielberg was nominated for West Side Story, probably edging out Sian Heder whose CODA won Best Picture.

Steven Spielberg is... Steven Spielberg. And he almost certainly edged out Denis Villeneuve. No way in hell was the director's branch ever going to nominate CODA.

I saw Wicked last night. Packed theater. Everyone in the room seemed to enjoy it. I thought it was a bit long but the performance of Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba was just thrilling to watch. She will most definitely be Oscar nominated if not win Best Actress for her performance. Her singing reminded me of at different times of Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand. Her acting had so much emoting in just her facial expressions alone. When she sang “I’m Not That Girl” i even teared up a bit. Ariana was totally dedicated to her role. She sang in a higher pitch than normal though. Her role was definitely a supporting one though and if she’s nominated it will be in that category. One of the best movie musicals to come out in a long time.

I could see it. It seems more likely than Conclave or Anora. It’s a so-so year for film.

I guess the only reason they keep people showing up is the rich giving extravagant gift bags to the rich.

Why isn’t Jonathan Bailey getting more attention?

Because he doesn't have a green pussy.

Conclave is silly. A really stupid plot held, up by very good actors.

by Anonymousreply 12November 30, 2024 8:15 AM

I prefer Cynthia’s singing to Idina’s. No screeching.
