Why not ruby slippers in wicked
Confused why the choice was made to go with the silver shoes from L. Frank Baum’s novel.
Usually this is done in OZ movies because MGM has the rights to the ruby slippers
However wicked lifts massive amounts of music, costuming and makeup cues directly from the 1939 version, - if they could have a green witch, Glinda in a bubble, multiple melodies from the 1939 film score and Dorothy in blue and white checked gingham why not just pay mgm to use the ruby slippers too?

In the Broadway show's second act, the silver shoes are turned into ruby slippers.
So presumably we will see this in Part II of the movie next year.

They are no ruby slippers in the L. Frank Baum book. It was added to the original film because of the bright color.

Sadly, it's obvious that R3's reading comprehension is roughly at the third-grade level.

They aren't turned into ruby slippers, they temporarily glow ruby when the spell is cast as a nod to the movie r2.
But I do think they assumed they would die for copyright infringement if they were straight ruby.

I'm not aware that ANY music from the the MGM movie is used in WICKED. Can you please give some examples? And are you talking about the stage version of WICKED, the movie, or both?

Forget it, Jake. It's Munchkintown.

1) re:shoes, wait for Part 2
2) There a brief musical line from “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in the movie’s scoring
Also
3) “Unlimited, my future is” from “The Wizard & I” is the same musical phrase as “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” but to a different rhythm.

The shoes in both the Gregory Maguire book and in the Stephen Schwarz stage musical are the silver shoes of the original L. Frank Baum book, rather than the ruby slippers of the 1939 film. So that is that.

The ruby slippers were copyrighted by MGM, the other things were not.
Dorothy wears a blue-and-white gingham dress in the original W. W. Denslow illustrations to the 1900 L. Frank Baum book, so MGM could never copyright that. And just using a bar of music is considered more or less free use--it's using more than that where you get into trouble

You see Glinda with a pair of ruby slippers when she's giving Elphaba a makeover during Popular

You probably know that the ruby slippers were an MGM addition.
In Baum's original book, they were silver.

These never sounded very comfy to me, as a child. How flexible could metal shoes be?

^^^I caught it. As I recall, it's heard somewhere near the beginning of the film. Maybe when we see that shot of Dorothy and her friends headed towards the Emerald City?

Ah, good catch r19. That was one of my favorite moments of the film.

R16, that’s nothing compared to glass slippers. A mistranslation from the original French tale…they were fur, probably fur-lined.

Fun fact: in the book Dorothy kills the witch purely out of anger.
