Are 007 movies over?

James Bond hasn't been around in awhile.

by Anonymousreply 75November 27, 2024 1:17 AM

Oh wow OP. I was just thinking about watching No Time to Die once this Philly game goes off.

by Anonymousreply 1November 25, 2024 2:47 AM

Should have added some sort of fun reference link

by Anonymousreply 2November 25, 2024 2:47 AM

Pretty much OP.

by Anonymousreply 3November 25, 2024 2:47 AM

They're a piece of Americana, we can't let them die. Plus, they're entertaining.

by Anonymousreply 4November 25, 2024 2:51 AM

They panned to announce Aaron Taylor Johnson as the new Bond this year. Something happened and he walked away. So they are looking for a new one now.

by Anonymousreply 5November 25, 2024 2:55 AM

AHEM!

by Anonymousreply 6November 25, 2024 2:55 AM

The Daniel Craig movies were too serious and action oriented, like a Bourne movie. They need to go back to the fun movies where they foiled someone from robbing Fort Knox or going to outer space or some such shit.

by Anonymousreply 7November 25, 2024 2:56 AM

[quote]They're a piece of Americana

They really aren't R4. The premise of Bond is that the topic and films are about an infamous British spy and the British government's involvement in world affairs.

The brand has stagnated recently as there doesn't seem to be a suitable replacement for Craig that everybody can agree on and move ahead with. The last Bond film was released in 2021 and the previous was released in 2015 so we are due for a new film in a few years if everybody can work it out.

by Anonymousreply 8November 25, 2024 3:01 AM

No Time to Die was just a running unimaginative string of 007 cliches.

I thought it was bad to the point of embarrassment.

by Anonymousreply 9November 25, 2024 3:04 AM

After Skyfall, the Craig 007 movies were awful. Humorless. Cynical. Self-absorbed.

by Anonymousreply 10November 25, 2024 3:05 AM

I liked Casino Royale. WHET Eva Green? I don't think I've seen her since Penny Dreadful.

by Anonymousreply 11November 25, 2024 3:07 AM

Oh please, No Time is awesome and has a 83% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

by Anonymousreply 12November 25, 2024 3:07 AM

R12 - Well, so did Chevy Chase's Fletch and Get Him to The Greek, so that's not exactly great company.

I said what I said - some fun action scenes - but cliche over cliche over cliche.

by Anonymousreply 13November 25, 2024 3:15 AM

Fletch is a really good movie.

by Anonymousreply 14November 25, 2024 3:26 AM

r13 "I said what I said"

Oh, dear

by Anonymousreply 15November 25, 2024 3:31 AM

r14 The Fletch theme is also fun

by Anonymousreply 16November 25, 2024 3:45 AM

The Felch movies are also fun R16.

by Anonymousreply 17November 25, 2024 3:51 AM

[quote] They panned to announce Aaron Taylor Johnson as the new Bond this year. Something happened and he walked away.

Aaron demanded 007 be updated to be 008.5+ to suit his cocked weapon.

by Anonymousreply 18November 25, 2024 4:08 AM

They should remake On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

by Anonymousreply 19November 25, 2024 4:14 AM

I think Casino Royale and Skyfall were the only decent Craig movies. The others are either completely forgettable (SPECTRE, No Time To Die) or just bad (Quantum of Solace).

Eva Green was the best bond girl of the era, by far.

by Anonymousreply 20November 25, 2024 4:37 AM

No Time to Die was cringe. And the cinematography was so soulless, it mostly looked like a car commercial.

The only good part was Ana de Armas.

by Anonymousreply 21November 25, 2024 4:53 AM

NTtD was the last Craig movie so I wanted it to be perfect or really bad. It's right in the middle. It's not as good as Casino Royale or Skyfall but it's not as bad as the other two. Pretty much the worst outcome for a final movie.

by Anonymousreply 22November 25, 2024 5:27 AM

They killed him.

No take backs.

by Anonymousreply 23November 25, 2024 6:10 AM

Of you didn't see the dead body he didn't die.

by Anonymousreply 24November 25, 2024 6:47 AM

The last Bond wasn't particularly handsome.

by Anonymousreply 25November 25, 2024 6:48 AM

IMO, the depiction of 'Bond' is dated, as is 'Danger Man,' 'Secret Agent,' and 'The Prisoner.' Espionage isn't conducted that way anymore, if it ever truly was.

If the British really had a program like the 'Double 0s,' in order to be useful at all, they'd need to do something about people like Trump and Elon Musk, who are real-life Bond villains if anyone ever was.

by Anonymousreply 26November 25, 2024 7:12 AM

Eva Green was in a protracted legal battle about a movie that she was signed for that was put into turnaround. She won the lawsuit, but it may not have done much for her career.

by Anonymousreply 27November 25, 2024 7:23 AM

R26 could we not have one thread that doesn’t mention those two?

by Anonymousreply 28November 25, 2024 7:24 AM

R26 Fuck off bitch. Stop politicizing everything.

by Anonymousreply 29November 25, 2024 7:25 AM

R23 and r24

NTtD established that 007/Bond is an alias and not an individual. This has been a fan theory for years and they made it real, probably so they could recast Craig with someone drastically different.

by Anonymousreply 30November 25, 2024 7:45 AM

[quote]R29: Fuck off bitch. Stop politicizing everything.

That's rich coming from you. Teasock, you and your satellite accounts do waaay more political posting than I do.

The two I mentioned (and there's lots more, like Putin and Kim Jong-Un) are real-life analogues to the Bond villains, and it's infuriating that nothing like Bond has intervened.

The sock user behind you and some seventy-plus other accounts is the equivalent of a Bond villain on the Datalounge. Why don't 𝑦𝑜𝑢 fuck off?

by Anonymousreply 31November 25, 2024 8:45 AM

I like the idea of a remake of a Classic Bond but why that one, r19? I'd rather see a remake of Goldfinger, the best of the Connery movies.

by Anonymousreply 32November 25, 2024 9:08 AM

^ I'd prefer a new story. But if remaking an old Bond I'd suggest to pick one that wasn't that great. Re-make You Only Live Twice. It was forgettable (story, villain, performance) in pretty much every way. It deserves a second chance, this time done well.

by Anonymousreply 33November 25, 2024 9:30 AM

[quote]They really aren't [R4]. The premise of Bond is that the topic and films are about an infamous British spy and the British government's involvement in world affairs.

All of the bond films have been co-UK/US productions, with a lot of help from Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 34November 25, 2024 9:32 AM

Would love to be a fly on the wall to know what takes so long.

by Anonymousreply 35November 25, 2024 9:40 AM

It's because they can't find the right person to cast as 007 R35.

by Anonymousreply 36November 25, 2024 9:46 AM

Yeah it's pretty clear they're really struggling to find the next Bond.

I think a lot of the actors they'd like for Bond probably don't want it. After all, those actors will be in demand and likely don't fancy getting typecast.

Of course a lot of lesser known actors would jump at the chance, but the scriptwriters don't want them.

Whoever it ends up being will be criticised to the nth degree, but I can understand them wanting to keep that to a minimum. I expect they want to stick to a straight white man because if they deviate from that, the "woke" accusations will be mammoth.

by Anonymousreply 37November 25, 2024 12:04 PM

r21 "was cringe"

Oh, dear

by Anonymousreply 38November 25, 2024 1:11 PM

Daniel Craig was a VERY controversial pick as James Bond and he turned out to be the best since Sean Connery.

I don’t think the public will go for the suave, pretty Moore/Brosnan type again. Even Superman is dark nowadays. Pierce Brosnan’s post-Bond movies have shown he can sidestep the suaveness so the problem was the silly scripts.

Aaron Taylor Johnson is too pretty. There’s not a line on his face.

by Anonymousreply 39November 25, 2024 1:28 PM

[quote] NTtD established that 007/Bond is an alias and not an individual

How? By replacing Bond with a new 007? It’s always been clear that the numbers would be re-assigned. But the new 007 did not use the name James Bond.

Why would a spy find having a notorious spy name useful?

by Anonymousreply 40November 25, 2024 1:35 PM

[quote] I expect they want to stick to a straight white man because if they deviate from that,

Pleasing not just the Western but also the Chinese market is probably part of the challenge. China is very specific what you can show and what you can't. The European and US market may be ready for a Black-British Bond, but China may not be. I think all these national considerations really emasculated the franchise. The franchise could handle a Chinese villain for obvious reasons. But it's unlikely that we ever going to see one. China may not even allow a Russian villain at this point.

by Anonymousreply 41November 25, 2024 1:42 PM

Daniel Craig’s character was a reboot. There is no continuity between him and the other Bonds, as evidenced by the different origin story for the iconic Aston Martin. But he has the same backstory as the other Bonds, so it is not a new character.

Lazenby and Moore had memories of people and events from films where another actor portrayed the character. Moore visits the grave of the woman Lazenby married.

On the other hand, Blofeld met Connery Bond but did not recognize Lazenby Bond. I’ve always regarded this a mere sloppiness since the events in the OHMSS book took place before YOLT.

by Anonymousreply 42November 25, 2024 1:47 PM

The new 007 will be a woman.

by Anonymousreply 43November 25, 2024 2:22 PM

R43 I don't think Jane Bond would be worth the risk.

I'd quite like if it the writers trolled everyone on April 1 by announcing the next Bond as a black, female, disabled lesbian. It'd be worth it to watch the right wing implode for a few hours.

by Anonymousreply 44November 25, 2024 2:29 PM

You forgot Muslim.

by Anonymousreply 45November 25, 2024 2:30 PM

We've gone 7 years without a Bond film before, we'll be fine.

by Anonymousreply 46November 25, 2024 3:27 PM

[quote]If the British really had a program like the 'Double 0s,' in order to be useful at all, they'd need to do something about people like Trump and Elon Musk, who are real-life Bond villains if anyone ever was.

It's a fun movie franchise, not to be taken seriously. JFC.

by Anonymousreply 47November 25, 2024 4:05 PM

NTtD was terrible. Bond a dad with a family who gets killed? I don't think so.

by Anonymousreply 48November 25, 2024 4:10 PM

R48 yeah, it's like a Bond film made for fraus

by Anonymousreply 49November 25, 2024 4:12 PM

Totally.

by Anonymousreply 50November 25, 2024 4:18 PM

Also, Connery came back after OHMSS and was seeking Blofeld for revenge for killing his wife.

Clearly the same man.

by Anonymousreply 51November 25, 2024 10:11 PM

R41 - So much for the Dr. No remake.

by Anonymousreply 52November 25, 2024 10:18 PM

I'm surprised they haven't done any spin off yet, like 008 mini series on Prime.

by Anonymousreply 53November 25, 2024 10:22 PM

If they remake OHMSS it will need a title change.

by Anonymousreply 54November 25, 2024 10:47 PM

I think that old producer Barbra Broccoli (whatever her name is) is too protective of the franchise to allow that.

by Anonymousreply 55November 25, 2024 11:03 PM

R53^

by Anonymousreply 56November 25, 2024 11:03 PM

I would like a May Day origin story

by Anonymousreply 57November 26, 2024 4:25 AM

Being heavily invested in politics is not the same as overly politicizing cinema and non political entertainment. Carry on.

by Anonymousreply 58November 26, 2024 5:05 AM

I vote Damson Idris for the next James Bond.

by Anonymousreply 59November 26, 2024 5:14 AM

David Gyasi, presently playing the Foreign Secretary on The Diplomat. Wears a tuxedo quite well.

by Anonymousreply 60November 26, 2024 2:26 PM

They should go back to the original idea of Bond, none of that "Bond is the father of a little girl" nonsense. Bond was written as a White womanizing cold killer. I think if you cast a Black actor as a that you run into trouble with the stereotypes.

by Anonymousreply 61November 26, 2024 4:24 PM

James Bond will now be portrayed by Cynthia Erivo.

by Anonymousreply 62November 26, 2024 4:28 PM

They should make the next series a period piece set in Bond’s heyday. 1950s and 1960s. No computers. No “me too.” Just pure Bond.

“Quarrel—fetch my shoes!”

by Anonymousreply 63November 26, 2024 4:28 PM

R63 A period piece Bond would be rather interesting.

by Anonymousreply 64November 26, 2024 8:47 PM

R61 you make Bond sound like a serial killer. A black Bond would be just fine.

by Anonymousreply 65November 26, 2024 9:03 PM

A black Bond is simply not the character written. Write another story with a black character.

I really enjoyed Peirce Brosnan. He was beautiful and debonair, a little femme. Daniel Craig looks like a common thug and therefore didn’t really fit the character, who was supposed to be very refined.

by Anonymousreply 66November 26, 2024 10:00 PM

R66 The character has evolved so much from the original Ian Fleming novels. And that’s the beautiful thing about art. As long as he is British or Scottish, race shouldn’t matter.

by Anonymousreply 67November 26, 2024 10:11 PM

Or Irish or Australian.

by Anonymousreply 68November 26, 2024 10:16 PM

Nothing wrong with a black, Indian or Asian Bond unless the character still matches. I think we are beyond the original physical features that Fleming described. Or are we still up in arms that the last Bond was... blond?

by Anonymousreply 69November 26, 2024 10:23 PM

R64 Sam Mendes floated the idea about, of making the next Bond films time apropriate , that is, set to the time they were written in/about. I would LOVE this but I feel the producers will get cold feet.

That said, it is cannon that Bond had a kid, in the novels at least...though all we know is that the baby mamma Kissy Susuki was pregnant and didn't tell Bond when he left her at the end of You only live Twice.

by Anonymousreply 70November 26, 2024 10:54 PM

[quote]Daniel Craig looks like a common thug and therefore didn’t really fit the character, who was supposed to be very refined.

Daniel Craig also looked totally Eastern European, even though he's Welsh. If I hadn't known any better I would've thought he was Polish.

by Anonymousreply 71November 26, 2024 11:07 PM

He’s not Welsh. He’s from Cheshire. He has some Welsh heritage.

by Anonymousreply 72November 26, 2024 11:23 PM

I just hope they reboot the series before I die. A new Bond was always a must-see movie for me. I liked the DC Bond but hated the Roger Moore Bond.

by Anonymousreply 73November 27, 2024 12:02 AM

OP “They're a piece of Americana, we can't let them die. Plus, they're entertaining”

Oh dear.

by Anonymousreply 74November 27, 2024 12:19 AM

[quote] Or are we still up in arms that the last Bond was... blond?

It always perplexed me that people were angry about this because Craig wasn't any blonder than Moore.
