What a movie!! Zoe Saldana's performance is incredible. She will absolutely get an Oscar nom.

With the Gothams, NYFCC and NBR all ignoring this film, it seems like Emilia Perez is slipping out of the awards conversation with the velocity of a mud slide.
I don’t know if it was eligible but even the Indie Spirits ignored it for their Top 5 International Films. NBR didn’t even include it on their Top 10 list. There was a time when awards watchers thought it was a shoo-in for a Best Picture nomination but now that seems unlikely. There still seems to be regard for Zoe Saldana and Karla Sofia Gascon but with the arrival of Wicked, which kind of over performed at the NBR, taking the two top prizes and a special prize for Erivo and Grande (which seems really fan-gurly, like an “we promised our daughters” kind of prize), the Emilia Perez stars who once seemed like locks might be edged out to make room for Wicked.
The shared prize for the Wicked stars might be an early indicator of how the film plays at the Oscars with nominations for both actresses. Nothing would spike the ratings more than a Wicked night at the Oscars.
For the record, aside from the populist choices of Wicked, NBR also tapped performances on the bubble with awards for Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman, and completely ignored The Brutalist as well in their Top 10 list and the Top 10 Indie list, which is odd because the film reportedly only cost $9M with a 3.5 hour running time is some sort of triumph of indie production at the very least. But not to them.
It’s a good year for film though, despite the strikes last year. There’s a lot of interesting films about.

It was a crazy weird film that I absolutely loved. I was humming the main tune for days afterwards. You guys have to watch it, Give a chance.

Didn’t you start the same thread last week with no traction. It’s amusing Netflix is pushing Zoe Saldana as best supporting actress when she has the most screen time of anyone in the film.

Zoe Saldana should be nominated for Best Actress but maybe the competition is too strong this year

This was such an enjoyable watch.
Love how they blended the musical elements in a way that really worked and made it fun and visually appealing.
That guy knows how to direct.

Emilia Perez is in trouble. I still think it’s pretty safe for a best picture nomination but I could see it getting snubbed in other categories. It’s a very polarizing film. Saldana is absolutely committing category fraud but at least she’s miles better than Gomez and the sex changed lead.

I liked the musical elements. I immediately grasped that it was just a different mode of expression for these characters and not to be taken literally as a “movie musical” which I think is what a lot of viewers were expecting. I just thought it was more avant garde.
I liked it but it probably would’ve been better as an Almodovar film.

[quote] It’s a very polarizing film.
Solely because it has a trans character in it. As if trans people shouldn't ever be portrayed in movies.

I understand the backlash. The Netflix bias as well as the closeted conservative crowd in Hollywood.

Because of the trans character? seriously?
Conservatives were like this with gay men too--trying to block all portrayal in media

It’s a bizarre film because of the music. I think without it, there would be more recognition for awards. I appreciated the ambition behind it.

I was surprised by the fact that it was a musical, but ultimately it made it more interesting

I hate musicals and I really liked this.

Saldana should definitely be in the lead actress category. I guess they want to give Gascon the big push, but I wasn't that impressed with her. She's no more than competent.
Gomez is more animated than she is on Only Murders in the Building, but there's nothing all that special about her performance.

I hope the GG nods get more people to see the film.

Gomez was awful. She doesn't speak Spanish well enough to be able to understand what she's saying. Her dialogue almost sounded down syndrome

Zoe was so good. Don’t think I’ve seen her in anything before (I never saw Avatar).

R19, I think she was supposed to be American in the movie. She makes reference to her sister who lives in the US

Okay I just watched this. I actually thought it was very good and the reveal musical number at the very end was very moving.
I actually watched the song a couple of times.
Gomez should get a nomination for this alone
by Anonymous | reply 22 | December 15, 2024 3:51 AM |
Gomez is supposed to be a Chicana so her bad accent in Spanish is appropriate for the character.
I agree that Zoe is amazing in this movie and should be nominated. The acting nominations for Karla Sofia Gascon are a ridiculous toss to the woke. She's good in it but nowhere near award level.
The music sucked big time except for maybe two songs and not even.

“The woke.” Ever heard of smart, non-prejudiced person utter that?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 21, 2024 3:28 PM |
If anything, I’ve seen more backlash from “the woke” than from conservatives on this film. Which means it’s probably doing something right.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 21, 2024 5:17 PM |
“Woke” has just come to mean “not featuring straight white men”
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 21, 2024 5:25 PM |
No, "woke" means wanting to be considered correct, and wanting everyone to know just how correct you are.
