Entertainment trivia
Let’s share interesting, little-known facts about entertainment productions.
I’ll start — SoongeBob SquarePants was originally named “SoongeBoy.” The creator of the show was a marine biologist who wanted kids to be aware of tidal animals, so he named his sponge protagonist “SpongeBoy.” The entire first episode was recorded.
Then Legal at Nickelodeon discovered the name “SpongeBoy” was copyrighted.
So they either had to go back and redo the audio for the entire episode, or figure out some way to patch over it. Boy became Bob, an easy fix in editing. It’s a very strange name but was created out of need, not quirk.

Geri Reischl - who is best known as “Fake Jan” in the Brady Bunch variety series - was the original choice to play Blair on The Facts of Life. She was even at the first table read, but later the same day was informed by her agent that being on FOL was in conflict with a contract she’d signed with a breakfast cereal company to do their commercials. Lisa Whelchel was then brought in to play Blair.

Following BONANZA's cancellation, Lorne Greene bought "Buck" -- the beautiful buckskin horse he'd ridden for the entirety of the series -- and donated him to an equine-rehabilitation program for kids with disabilities.
Buck was well into his twenties when the series ended. While not a horse-guy by nature, Lorne had grown to love Buck & couldn't stand the idea that the gentle old guy might be sent off to the "glue factory" because he was no longer viable to Fat Jones' stable (provider of horses to film/TV productions). Buck lived almost another twenty years -- to 45! (he outlived Lorne)
Anyway, Lorne Greene was a mensch of the first order.

Dark Bonanza-horse trivia:
In 1964, some psycho POS broke into Fat Jones' Stables one night, drugged seven horses, and then maimed them with a knife. Some of the horses had to be euthanized due to the severity of their injuries, including Tomahawk -- known to audiences as "Cochise" -- the beautiful pinto ridden by Little Joe since the show's debut.
Michael Landon was distraught (he adored Tomahawk) and outraged that someone would do that to any horse. He offered a $25,000 reward (about $250,000 today!) for any information leading to the perpetrator's identity, to no avail. The crime was never solved.

In the film version of A Little Night Music, Elizabeth Taylor (Desiree), Lesley-Anne Down (Anne), and Chloe Franks (Fredericka) were all dubbed -by the same singer, Elaine Tomkinson. Taylor did do her own singing for "Send in the Clowns" but it required hundreds of edits from multiple takes (and a bit of "sweetening" with a dubbed-in voice after the fact). Madame Armfeldt's song, "Liaisons" was rewritten and recorded for the film, but never actually filmed.

Albert Finney was screen tested and almost cast as T.E. Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia. Finney got into an argument with producer Sam Spiegel, so it did not work out. Peter O'Toole was cast instead.
At the time, O'Toole was playing Henry II in an Royal Shakespeare Production of Becket with Eric Porter, Ian Holm, and Diana Rigg. When O'Toole left to film Lawrence, he was replaced by Christopher Plummer. Plummer signed onto the film adaptation, but producer Hal Wallis bought him out when O'Toole become available. The film cast included O'Toole, Richard Burton, John Gielgud, Sian Phillips, and Sir Donald Wolfit.

R28 It’s a diner in the Midwest that serves a sandwich that resembles sloppy Joe without sauce. Just ground beef cooked in its juices and a little seasoning. They serve the sandwich with something as simple as a bag of chips. They’ll probably have slices of pie for dessert. Your beverage is always a “can of cold pop”.

Executives at CBS pushed for Roddy McDowell to be cast as Niles on THE NANNY. Fran Drescher & Peter Marc Jacobson said "absolutely not", they'd keep looking. It was nothing against Roddy McDowell. As Fran Drescher later said to Daniel Davis (who was shocked to get the part, knowing that McDowell's name was in the mix): "Then it would have been the Roddy McDowell show -- and this is the Fran Drescher show."

[quote] Ron Howard has put his brother in every movie he has ever directed.
[R26] Inaccurate - he has been in many of them but not every one.
Speaking of Ron Howard....Garry Marshall's kids pop-up as extras, or in minor speaking roles, in almost everything he did -- and some of aunt Penny's things, too. (And he employed his other sister, Ronny Hallin, on a bunch of stuff)
Both of his daughters, Lori & Kathleen, were in YOUNG DOCTORS IN LOVE (an underrated daytime-soap spoof). Eventually, Kathi was Julie Andrews' mostly-silent secretary, "Miss Kutaway" (ha!), in THE PRINCESS DIARIES films. She was also "Mumbles Brockman", one of the background Rockford Peaches in a of A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN. (She's standing next to Tom Hanks on the dugout-steps when he nails "Stillwell" with a baseball glove to the head). You can't help but laugh at that.
Also: Garry's son, Scott, was the horny-kid who propositioned Geena Davis in the car, outside of the Suds Bucket. "Can't we do both?"
