NEW: The audience exodus from CNN and especially MSNBC since the election is staggering. CNN and MSNBC have seen totals decline by 27% and 38%, respectively. In 25-54 demo, CNN has averaged 70,000 while MSNBC has averaged 53,000.
I haven't watched since election night.

Now that social media and posting are ubiquitous, viewers no longer need to or care about tuning in to these bunch of pundits giving their own opinions on, rather than providing the news. We users can do that ourselves now.

Comcast spinning off MSNBC will be brilliant. I hope the new org will be situated to do battle with the Fox/Advertising/Marketing/Analytics behemoth that Murdoch positions as an Entertainment outlet.
Only from the left.

The latest ratings. Source AdWeek.
It's amazing that some of these people still have multi million dollar paychecks.
Anderson Cooper...CNN's star...gets obliterated in the ratings.
And maybe having so many women leading these shows isn't such a good idea either.
I actually like the line-up of Collins, Phillip and Coates but man, it's a ratings disaster.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | November 24, 2024 6:08 AM |
Just shut them down. Come January it's going to be Fox News on every restaurant, bar, and JC Penney television anyway, so why fight it now?

PBS NewsHour, Meet the Press, and occasionally C-SPAN are more than enough for this eldergay. I'm sorry (not sorry) if that makes me an echo-chamber viewer. Haven't decided yet whether I'll be tuning in for Inauguration Day coverage on C-SPAN or MSNBC.

Most progressives were so let down by the election it's normal to turn off that source of info for a white. The right is spinning this as the downfall of the progressives of course.

Their news sources let them down by telling them what they wanted to hear instead of preparing them for what was happening. That's the problem with having a niche audience. If MSNBC/CNN were to just stick with the truth, whatever it may be, they would lose their audience when stating things their audience didn't like.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | November 24, 2024 10:02 AM |
Their audience is in shock. I think their ratings will recover but they need more news and less opinion. Opinions from people who know nothing that is.

by Anonymous | reply 32 | November 24, 2024 2:21 PM |
Over the past year, many viewers finally woke up to the fact they they're being lied to every night, that these "news" programs and "journalists" were really just propagandists and always had been.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | November 24, 2024 2:29 PM |
^^^^But obviously, MILLIONS of other viewers have NOT woken up to that fact, and they were the ones who elected Trump -- because the TV "news" programs they watch are the most hateful propaganda of all.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | November 24, 2024 2:46 PM |
One thing this election made clear, and there’s data to back it up… the % of American voters who tune in regularly to mainstream TV and print news and eyeballs reading mainstream online news has been falling and falling and falling. It is now possible for a right wing Republican to win a national election with voters who do not watch CNN or ABC and do not read the mainstream news either.
And that is what has just happened. Long gone are the days when if Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings covered it, everybody watched and took it in from the mainstream perspective.

Let's not forget the fact that David Muir averages nearly 8 million viewers, Lester Holt: 6,40 million, Norah O'Donnell: 4.65 million.

Except they turn on Fox which is the highest ratings main stream media out of them all and a big part of why they won the election.
You can claim network media is dead and it's all about social media when the number watched network show is FOX and FOX is what drove the election turn out on the right.

With a US population of 335 million - those numbers are miniscule and the viewers are all rusted on Democrats - almost no Republicans consume any of that news.

I think a lot of people are tired of hearing hours of discussion about Trump every day on the news. It has been going on ever since 2015. I like to be well-informed and used to keep up with the terrible things Trump was doing every day but it becomes counterproductive after awhile. What's the point of listening to the same talking heads discussing Trump for hours every night? We know he will cause chaos and destruction, but there's a limit as to how much we need to listen to it.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | November 25, 2024 8:17 AM |
Unfortunately R41 - it's just going to go on and on for the next 5 years at least. Every single detail of Trump & co, all the chaos, the firings, the chaos, the midnight tweets, the chaos, the insults, the chaos, the infighting, more chaos... all dissected in minute detail by drooling commentators. I don't think I have the strength.
What I've noticed is that most of the guest commentators (and most the presenters too) have absolutely no idea what they're talking about. Just like polls. All wrong. I can't be bothered with it anymore. CNN and MSNBC will both be thrilled that Trump won because he gets them ratings and money. Well, that's if anyone watches anymore. But we can expect years and years of talk about Trump 24/7/365. It will be never ending.

I agree. I’m tired of hearing the news discussed. I just want to hear the news, not the opinion of it from talking heads. It’s enough for me to learn that Trump appointed A, B, and C to the cabinet. I don’t need hours of pundits opining on it.

The first time every outrage felt surprising and it was if he was some kind of mistake that everyone was waiting to go away. It was like looking at an accident on the highway
It’s not so satisfying to hear about stupidity and corruption when the voters knew (or should have known) what they were getting and chose it anyway.
We’ve seen this movie before.

R50 lol it has always been their country. It’s a straight person’s world. We don’t like to admit this, but without their goodwill, tolerance or ambivalence we have to live the personal part of our lives underground.
I’m not right wing and I never have been, but I am from a Red State. The truth is they are not going to tolerate children’s access to puberty blockers/cross sex hormones for much longer. Go anywhere right on social media and it won’t take you long to see that gay rights are viewed (stupidly) by many as the bridge that enabled this.
We have seen the backlash already. Let’s just hope that calmer heads prevail and they see that their gay cousin or uncle isn’t the real problem. It’s the progressive agenda that is enabling this.
