CNN and MSNBC ratings plummet

NEW: The audience exodus from CNN and especially MSNBC since the election is staggering. CNN and MSNBC have seen totals decline by 27% and 38%, respectively. In 25-54 demo, CNN has averaged 70,000 while MSNBC has averaged 53,000.

I haven't watched since election night.

by Anonymousreply 1November 23, 2024 11:26 AM

Fuck cable noise.

by Anonymousreply 2November 24, 2024 2:10 AM

The accomplished the feat of alienating the public.

by Anonymousreply 3November 24, 2024 2:11 AM

Now that social media and posting are ubiquitous, viewers no longer need to or care about tuning in to these bunch of pundits giving their own opinions on, rather than providing the news. We users can do that ourselves now.

by Anonymousreply 4November 24, 2024 5:51 AM

Comcast spinning off MSNBC will be brilliant. I hope the new org will be situated to do battle with the Fox/Advertising/Marketing/Analytics behemoth that Murdoch positions as an Entertainment outlet.

Only from the left.

by Anonymousreply 5November 24, 2024 6:01 AM

Oh dear, how will I ever get my Andrea Mitchell hot takes if MSNBC goes kaput?

by Anonymousreply 6November 24, 2024 6:07 AM

The latest ratings. Source AdWeek.

It's amazing that some of these people still have multi million dollar paychecks.

Anderson Cooper...CNN's star...gets obliterated in the ratings.

And maybe having so many women leading these shows isn't such a good idea either.

I actually like the line-up of Collins, Phillip and Coates but man, it's a ratings disaster.

Just shut them down. Come January it's going to be Fox News on every restaurant, bar, and JC Penney television anyway, so why fight it now?

by Anonymousreply 8November 24, 2024 6:10 AM

Ya’ll better learn to speak MAGA or else you will be shot in the face.

by Anonymousreply 9November 24, 2024 6:15 AM

The average age of a cable news viewer is now about 70.

by Anonymousreply 10November 24, 2024 6:30 AM

Does this mean we won't have to put up with Cohen/Cooper on New Year's Eve?

by Anonymousreply 11November 24, 2024 6:32 AM

R11 There's the bright spot we were looking for

by Anonymousreply 12November 24, 2024 6:35 AM

I have forbidden Eldergay to watch MSNBC all day, and yes he's 70, we do not watch the national news either anymore, I know he reads stuff which I tell him not to do, there's is nothing that can be changed, sit back and watch the shit show.

by Anonymousreply 13November 24, 2024 6:41 AM

R13 just go along for the ride. We survived Reagan, we can survive this

by Anonymousreply 14November 24, 2024 6:48 AM

R10 They're the same ones that buy into that whole "DVR" sham

by Anonymousreply 15November 24, 2024 6:48 AM

[quote]Oh dear, how will I ever get my Andrea Mitchell hot takes if MSNBC goes kaput?

Oh Dear! Some old trolls have not realized she retired a month ago and still live in the past with very outdated jokes.

by Anonymousreply 16November 24, 2024 6:51 AM

PBS NewsHour, Meet the Press, and occasionally C-SPAN are more than enough for this eldergay. I'm sorry (not sorry) if that makes me an echo-chamber viewer. Haven't decided yet whether I'll be tuning in for Inauguration Day coverage on C-SPAN or MSNBC.

by Anonymousreply 17November 24, 2024 6:53 AM

Most progressives were so let down by the election it's normal to turn off that source of info for a white. The right is spinning this as the downfall of the progressives of course.

by Anonymousreply 18November 24, 2024 6:53 AM

I wonder if a lot of people are deciding to take a news fast, just like many of us on DL have talked about doing lately?

by Anonymousreply 19November 24, 2024 7:24 AM

R19 it's not a "fast" it's just fucking common sense.

by Anonymousreply 20November 24, 2024 7:25 AM

OP, not saying this story isn’t true (I hope it is actually), but Puck News is as RW as it gets, they have ads all over X. Couldn’t you find a better source?

by Anonymousreply 21November 24, 2024 7:27 AM

R17 Really? You can't decide whether to tune into the Inauguration or not? I don't know about you but I'd have more fun at the laundromat. Go fold your whites or something.

by Anonymousreply 22November 24, 2024 7:32 AM

The traditionalist in me can't resist peeking in on a piece of history, R22, though I would need to be with like-minded friends.

“Morning Joe” ratings continued to fall after the hosts’ meeting with Trump, with Wednesday’s telecast ranking as its lowest-rated program since 2021

MSNBC will be center-right.

by Anonymousreply 25November 24, 2024 8:27 AM

Ratings are like polls - completely worthless

by Anonymousreply 26November 24, 2024 10:01 AM

[quote]Most progressives were so let down by the election it's normal to turn off that source of info for a white.

Their news sources let them down by telling them what they wanted to hear instead of preparing them for what was happening. That's the problem with having a niche audience. If MSNBC/CNN were to just stick with the truth, whatever it may be, they would lose their audience when stating things their audience didn't like.

by Anonymousreply 27November 24, 2024 10:02 AM

Their audience is in shock. I think their ratings will recover but they need more news and less opinion. Opinions from people who know nothing that is.

by Anonymousreply 28November 24, 2024 11:23 AM

[quote]Opinions from people who know nothing that is.

This x 1000.

by Anonymousreply 29November 24, 2024 12:08 PM

? MSNBC at large never promised me that Kamala was going to win the election. I stopped watching because it’s the next best thing to fleeing the country. I’m informed. I don’t understand the exodus to Fox. I suppose folks want to grow fat headed gobbling up sweet lies?

by Anonymousreply 30November 24, 2024 12:10 PM

Fewer people want to marinate in that shit these days. It made more sense to tune in when we were in election season. But now? We lost… WE KNOW. Trump will be bad… WE KNOW.

by Anonymousreply 31November 24, 2024 12:12 PM

50-70k viewers?? That's all?

How on earth do these channels survive on ratings that need to be tabulated under an electron microscope?

by Anonymousreply 32November 24, 2024 2:21 PM

Over the past year, many viewers finally woke up to the fact they they're being lied to every night, that these "news" programs and "journalists" were really just propagandists and always had been.

by Anonymousreply 33November 24, 2024 2:29 PM

^^^^But obviously, MILLIONS of other viewers have NOT woken up to that fact, and they were the ones who elected Trump -- because the TV "news" programs they watch are the most hateful propaganda of all.

by Anonymousreply 34November 24, 2024 2:46 PM

One thing this election made clear, and there’s data to back it up… the % of American voters who tune in regularly to mainstream TV and print news and eyeballs reading mainstream online news has been falling and falling and falling. It is now possible for a right wing Republican to win a national election with voters who do not watch CNN or ABC and do not read the mainstream news either.

And that is what has just happened. Long gone are the days when if Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings covered it, everybody watched and took it in from the mainstream perspective.

by Anonymousreply 35November 24, 2024 3:00 PM

[quote]And that is what has just happened. Long gone are the days when if Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings covered it, everybody watched and took it in from the mainstream perspective.

Let's not forget the fact that David Muir averages nearly 8 million viewers, Lester Holt: 6,40 million, Norah O'Donnell: 4.65 million.

by Anonymousreply 36November 24, 2024 4:58 PM

[quote]It is now possible for a right wing Republican to win a national election with voters who do not watch CNN or ABC

Except they turn on Fox which is the highest ratings main stream media out of them all and a big part of why they won the election.

You can claim network media is dead and it's all about social media when the number watched network show is FOX and FOX is what drove the election turn out on the right.

by Anonymousreply 37November 25, 2024 5:53 AM

R37 No show on Fox tops the network news programs on ABC, CBS and NBC.

by Anonymousreply 38November 25, 2024 6:00 AM

[quote]Let's not forget the fact that David Muir averages nearly 8 million viewers, Lester Holt: 6,40 million, Norah O'Donnell: 4.65 million.

With a US population of 335 million - those numbers are miniscule and the viewers are all rusted on Democrats - almost no Republicans consume any of that news.

by Anonymousreply 39November 25, 2024 6:04 AM

Makes sense. People need a break after being disappointed. They’ll be back.

by Anonymousreply 40November 25, 2024 6:04 AM

I think a lot of people are tired of hearing hours of discussion about Trump every day on the news. It has been going on ever since 2015. I like to be well-informed and used to keep up with the terrible things Trump was doing every day but it becomes counterproductive after awhile. What's the point of listening to the same talking heads discussing Trump for hours every night? We know he will cause chaos and destruction, but there's a limit as to how much we need to listen to it.

by Anonymousreply 41November 25, 2024 8:17 AM

Unfortunately R41 - it's just going to go on and on for the next 5 years at least. Every single detail of Trump & co, all the chaos, the firings, the chaos, the midnight tweets, the chaos, the insults, the chaos, the infighting, more chaos... all dissected in minute detail by drooling commentators. I don't think I have the strength.

What I've noticed is that most of the guest commentators (and most the presenters too) have absolutely no idea what they're talking about. Just like polls. All wrong. I can't be bothered with it anymore. CNN and MSNBC will both be thrilled that Trump won because he gets them ratings and money. Well, that's if anyone watches anymore. But we can expect years and years of talk about Trump 24/7/365. It will be never ending.

by Anonymousreply 42November 25, 2024 9:55 AM

So true-that Cohen /Cooper shit has to stop-cringeworthy TV.

by Anonymousreply 43November 25, 2024 11:19 AM

Fox lies about their polls.

by Anonymousreply 44November 25, 2024 11:20 AM

Fox lies about everything.

by Anonymousreply 45November 25, 2024 11:21 AM

[quote] I think a lot of people are tired of hearing hours of discussion about Trump every day on the news.

I agree. I’m tired of hearing the news discussed. I just want to hear the news, not the opinion of it from talking heads. It’s enough for me to learn that Trump appointed A, B, and C to the cabinet. I don’t need hours of pundits opining on it.

by Anonymousreply 46November 25, 2024 2:50 PM

The first time every outrage felt surprising and it was if he was some kind of mistake that everyone was waiting to go away. It was like looking at an accident on the highway

It’s not so satisfying to hear about stupidity and corruption when the voters knew (or should have known) what they were getting and chose it anyway.

We’ve seen this movie before.

by Anonymousreply 47November 25, 2024 2:56 PM

This guy probably pisses off CNN viewers when he talks about poll results, but it’s refreshing to see someone on the channel willing to say the way things are, for better or for worse, whether viewers like the news or not.

by Anonymousreply 49November 25, 2024 4:13 PM

It’s their country now.

America firsters, Nazi, right wing, anti choice, anti gay, anti trans…all of it.

People have no idea what is really coming.

by Anonymousreply 50November 25, 2024 4:40 PM

I would like to be inside Harry Enten quite deeply

by Anonymousreply 51November 25, 2024 5:51 PM

R50 lol it has always been their country. It’s a straight person’s world. We don’t like to admit this, but without their goodwill, tolerance or ambivalence we have to live the personal part of our lives underground.

I’m not right wing and I never have been, but I am from a Red State. The truth is they are not going to tolerate children’s access to puberty blockers/cross sex hormones for much longer. Go anywhere right on social media and it won’t take you long to see that gay rights are viewed (stupidly) by many as the bridge that enabled this.

We have seen the backlash already. Let’s just hope that calmer heads prevail and they see that their gay cousin or uncle isn’t the real problem. It’s the progressive agenda that is enabling this.

by Anonymousreply 52November 25, 2024 8:34 PM

OP = Team Nancy Mace

by Anonymousreply 53November 25, 2024 8:36 PM

[quote]We’ve seen this movie before.

Yeah, maybe the media executives are hoping that all the Trump chaos brings them big ratings again, but based on the numbers reported above, it looks like a lot of us are deciding to limit how much media we watch this time around.
