There's a dead girl in town!

Alice doesn’t live here anymore.

Now who will pick up the straws?

Here's a link that's not paywalled, though has a ton of ads.
Nice statement from Guthrie:
[quote]“I first met Alice in 1962 when she was the school librarian at The Stockbridge School, in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. I was there beginning my second of four years. I also met, Rick Robbins, another student, and we've been friends ever since,” Guthrie recalled. “Rick and I went to visit Ray and Alice for Thanksgiving in 1965. The rest is history. Alice went into the restaurant business and I began my years as an entertainer. We were, both in our own ways, successful. As well as being a restauranteur, Alice also became an author, and an artist. We worked together on various projects. During the next few decades we remained friends while our lives kept us busy. She was a no-nonsense gal, with a great sense of humor.”
[quote]“This coming Thanksgiving will be the first without her,” Guthrie continued, describing Brock as a "lifelong friend." “Alice and I spoke by phone a couple of weeks ago, and she sounded like her old self. We joked around and had a couple of good laughs even though we knew we'd never have another chance to talk together.”

I don’t know about elsewhere, but Alice’s Restaurant is a minor Thanksgiving leitmotif in Massachusetts among MA Gen X hippie wannabees.
So this news is slightly sad for several friends.

[quote]Alice from Alice's Restaurant has died
She lasted almost as long as that fucking song.

I’ll be damned. I own her book “How to Massage Your cat” and had no idea it was done by her.

‘ceptin’ Alice, of course . . .
by Anonymous | reply 8 | November 23, 2024 3:32 PM |
I can’t believe she was still alive!

Is Arlo still one of those "9/11 conservative Republicans"?

Not anymore, it would seem.

Whew. I thought this was going to be Linda Lavin who died.

Was it in a grease fire?

Never heard of it - looking at the jumble of lyrics, it sounds like drug-induced word vomit. Below are the lyrics - seriously.
Jesus Christ it's long - this isn't a song.
This is someone talking to a guitar background or something. I refuse to listen to it.
Not every piece of culture needs to be revered.

The classic rock station always plays it on Thanksgiving. It's an annual tradition for many boomers, r15, but not for you.
R15 refuses to listen!! Did everyone get that?🙄
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 23, 2024 9:45 PM |
R16 - I tried it on YouTube - it's exactly what I thought it was. Couldn't make it through.
Again - not every piece of culture or nostalgia is great.

R15 can’t believe the song is longer than a TikTok

"I had to take off, start enjoyin' 'cause life's too short!"

A song so long they made a movie out of it :) Just saw it not that long ago.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | November 23, 2024 11:08 PM |
r17. That's not singing, that's talking. Actually, it's rambling on and on and on...

R5 this news is slightly sad for me as a Massachusetts bred Gen X daughter of actual hippies who listened to this song every Thanksgiving.
Has Matt Damon commented yet?

Alice’s last dish.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | November 25, 2024 1:06 PM |
Died just before Thanksgiving.

The song is awful but very much of its' time.
The whole Berkshire/Stockbridge/James Taylor/ patchouli oil cult is just about dead here in MA.
And somehow Sweet Caroline (another awful song) remains Bostons' anthem.

R25 Yes, well you'll always have North Hampton, but, I love that dirty water. #BostonStrong

In other unexpected news, Alice from "Alice" is still alive, as is Alice from "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore."

Oh, DEAR!
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 25, 2024 9:33 PM |
Yeah, it's not singing, it's talking ... and talking.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | November 25, 2024 9:56 PM |
Legend has it that the length of the song (18 minutes and 34 seconds) is the same length as the erased Nixon Watergate tapes.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | November 26, 2024 12:41 AM |
It's a charming song and you're all a bunch of squares.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | November 26, 2024 12:53 AM |
That's disappointing. Kiss my you-know-whats.
