'A Man on the Inside' on Netflix

Ted Danson as a mild-mannered widowed professor hired to go undercover as a spy at a nursing home to catch a thief.

Danson is great, as is the rest of the cast: Margaret Avery, Susan Ruttan, Veronica Cartwright. And I get all the praise for Sally Struthers on the theater threads. She's probably the best one of all.

This is like "Murders in the Building" with all the twee gone and just genuine easy comedy.

I just started it and am enjoying it a lot. Lots of heart

by Anonymousreply 1November 22, 2024 11:17 AM

Ted Danson must be the most successful actor in TV history.

by Anonymousreply 2November 22, 2024 2:22 PM

Excuse me, R2?!

by Anonymousreply 3November 22, 2024 2:43 PM

Sorry Kelsey, but there is no excuse for you.

by Anonymousreply 4November 22, 2024 2:46 PM

It looks good but the retirement home sitcom w/ Vicki Lawrence didn’t fly long-America hates old people.

by Anonymousreply 5November 22, 2024 2:51 PM

Ted's three bro-y tween grandsons don't have a lot to do but they're hilarious. Reminds me a bit of the boys on Malcolm in the Middle.

by Anonymousreply 6November 22, 2024 7:41 PM

I checked out the original in Spanish already -- the guy is really old and has no charisma at all, so I couldn't make myself watch it for very long.

Hope this one's better.

by Anonymousreply 7November 22, 2024 7:51 PM

It sounds like an episode of Monk.

by Anonymousreply 8November 22, 2024 8:34 PM

Sounds good. I'll have something to watch tonight.

by Anonymousreply 9November 22, 2024 10:25 PM

It doesn't work. Except for Danson the casting is terrible. The premise is dumb. It has funny bits but they're just bits.

by Anonymousreply 10November 22, 2024 11:06 PM

i'll check out the first few eps this weekend.

by Anonymousreply 11November 22, 2024 11:08 PM

The guy who plays Danson's backgammon buddy at the home should get a Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy nod. He's totally natural and believable.

Of course, I looked him up, and — Juillard trained, Tony nominated, frequently worked with August Wilson on Broadway, SAG Award winner. His name is Stephen McKinley Henderson and apparently everyone else in the world knows who he is.

by Anonymousreply 12November 23, 2024 4:46 AM

Nobody is gonna mention DL fav Sally Struthers?!?!

by Anonymousreply 13November 23, 2024 7:51 AM

R6 they managed to give them all a bit of character with only a few lines but I thought Bro’ was overused.

by Anonymousreply 14November 23, 2024 9:38 AM

"Frasier 2," r3.

by Anonymousreply 15November 23, 2024 10:53 AM

R13, Read the OP!

"Thefts at a Nursing Home" is also a theme of the episode "Blue Herrings" from "Midsomer Murders," with, of course, some murders!

by Anonymousreply 16November 23, 2024 1:53 PM

R3 Danson has led 3 successful series now-can Kelsey say the same?

Plus don’t forget Something About Amelia.

by Anonymousreply 17November 23, 2024 2:15 PM

r17 Or maybe four?

Cheers

The Good Place

CSI

Becker

Less successful or not the lead: Ink. Mr. Mayor, Damages, Help Me Help You, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Fargo, Bored to Death

by Anonymousreply 18November 23, 2024 3:06 PM

Ted Danson is a TV treasure, handsome and funny. He'll be the male Betty White of Sit-Coms.

I'll never understand the Whoopi gig, though.

by Anonymousreply 19November 23, 2024 3:28 PM

The series is based on the documentary. True story.

by Anonymousreply 20November 23, 2024 10:31 PM

I don’t know what to think of the actress who plays his daughter.

by Anonymousreply 21November 23, 2024 10:34 PM

The daughter is the actress from It's Always Sunny...the waitress that Charlie was always chasing.

by Anonymousreply 22November 25, 2024 2:59 AM

I'm reluctant to watch since I've never cared for Danson, not even on Cheers.

by Anonymousreply 23November 25, 2024 3:03 AM

I need a man on the inside.

by Anonymousreply 24November 25, 2024 3:05 AM

#1 show on Netflix right now.

Michael Schur seems to reuse a lot of his stars from other shows. Danson and Eugene Cordero are from "The Good Place." Stephanie Beatriz and Marc Evan Jackson were from "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." Jackson was also on "Parks and Rec."

by Anonymousreply 25November 25, 2024 3:47 AM

R8 I was thinking that too. I’ve always liked Ted Danson.

by Anonymousreply 26November 25, 2024 4:04 AM

I thought that Ted Danson was wonderful in his small part in Body Heat. Do you remember when he was waiting for one of the other characters - probably William Hurt. Anyway - he was alone and practiced a dance routine. Really an odd but human touch .

by Anonymousreply 27November 25, 2024 4:25 AM

Mickey Rourke was great as the arsonist too. 40+ years later, Danson still looks good.

by Anonymousreply 28November 25, 2024 4:52 AM

Sally Struthers had gotten pretty heavy, but she looks quite svelte on this. Good for her for losing so much weight.

by Anonymousreply 29November 25, 2024 5:15 AM

Still chunky.

by Anonymousreply 30November 25, 2024 5:18 AM

I bawled all day and watched the whole thing. It felt much heavier than comedy to me. Maybe that's mostly because of my aging parent and also my own isolation as someone with disabilities trying to figure out how to be ok with being alone when you're too broke to move into a place like this. Perhaps other folks will feel more of the joy of it but fuck I'm exhausted.

by Anonymousreply 31November 25, 2024 5:20 AM

I'm glad DL has adopted Sally Struthers as a lovely person.

by Anonymousreply 32November 25, 2024 8:46 AM

I just finished it last night. As someone mentioned above [r8], my first thought was, "This feels like an episode of Monk" (not a bad thing).

The grandsons are funny, typical teenage louts!

Overall, I really liked it. They explore issues that the elderly encounter but in a heartfelt way.

by Anonymousreply 33November 25, 2024 12:05 PM

[quote] and also my own isolation as someone with disabilities trying to figure out how to be ok with being alone when you're too broke to move into a place like this.

I thought you worked in an 'upper class gym' obsessed with skinny white ladies?

by Anonymousreply 34November 25, 2024 3:30 PM

Just finished the whole series. I wonder what they're planning for next season (if there is one).

What I appreciated about this show was that -- for a comedy, they didn't shy away from tackling some really serious issues.

And one more Schur repeat casting: She only had a couple of lines, but D'Arcy Carden, from "The Good Place" showed up in the last episode.

Did anyone catch the crazy names of some of the characters?

You seem peculiarly invested in this show, r35.

by Anonymousreply 36November 26, 2024 8:34 AM

I despise Ted Manson. He's a bad one-note actor who has had, what, 60 series thrown at him. He's like flies on shit, inescapable and a very bad sign

by Anonymousreply 37November 26, 2024 8:52 AM

Plus all those killings...

by Anonymousreply 38November 26, 2024 11:09 AM

Just started this, and it's like the Great British Baking show for me- pleasant mindless viewing. Glad to hear D'Arcy Carden has a bit r33, she was great in the Good Place.

by Anonymousreply 39November 26, 2024 9:06 PM

R39, it gets better as it goes.

by Anonymousreply 40November 26, 2024 9:18 PM

My mom recently moved into a nice senior living center in San Francisco, so I can relate to this. The show gets a lot right about these centers. The only things I've noticed that are missing is that residents at my mom's place wear their key cards on a lanyard around their necks (and are all given emergency-alert wristbands), and there aren't nearly enough residents in wheelchairs or using walkers or scooters. (Yes, I realize it's not a documentary. The exteriors are the Mark Hopkins Hotel on Nob Hill, and I'm pretty sure you can't see the Golden Gate Bridge from its [imaginary] roof deck.) It took me forEVER to place Susan Ruttan.

Perfect description!

by Anonymousreply 43November 27, 2024 3:14 AM

I also thought it was charming. The setting was certainly the Arconia of Nursing Homes.

I laughed out loud at the Complaints Meeting, when the guy piped up "The food tastes like pennies and none of us can move our arms", and without a word the person next to him hit the alarm button round his neck and nurses came and took him away as the meeting continued.

by Anonymousreply 44November 27, 2024 2:52 PM

My mom's biggest complaint at her senior living center is the food, which is very hit or miss, so that pennies line rang true. Fortunately, my mom still likes to cook and makes most of her meals. We'll find out tomorrow how they handle the Thanksgiving feed, though.
