'A Man on the Inside' on Netflix
Ted Danson as a mild-mannered widowed professor hired to go undercover as a spy at a nursing home to catch a thief.
Danson is great, as is the rest of the cast: Margaret Avery, Susan Ruttan, Veronica Cartwright. And I get all the praise for Sally Struthers on the theater threads. She's probably the best one of all.
This is like "Murders in the Building" with all the twee gone and just genuine easy comedy.

Ted Danson must be the most successful actor in TV history.

It looks good but the retirement home sitcom w/ Vicki Lawrence didn’t fly long-America hates old people.

Ted's three bro-y tween grandsons don't have a lot to do but they're hilarious. Reminds me a bit of the boys on Malcolm in the Middle.

I checked out the original in Spanish already -- the guy is really old and has no charisma at all, so I couldn't make myself watch it for very long.
Hope this one's better.

It doesn't work. Except for Danson the casting is terrible. The premise is dumb. It has funny bits but they're just bits.

The guy who plays Danson's backgammon buddy at the home should get a Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy nod. He's totally natural and believable.
Of course, I looked him up, and — Juillard trained, Tony nominated, frequently worked with August Wilson on Broadway, SAG Award winner. His name is Stephen McKinley Henderson and apparently everyone else in the world knows who he is.

R6 they managed to give them all a bit of character with only a few lines but I thought Bro’ was overused.

R13, Read the OP!
"Thefts at a Nursing Home" is also a theme of the episode "Blue Herrings" from "Midsomer Murders," with, of course, some murders!

Ted Danson is a TV treasure, handsome and funny. He'll be the male Betty White of Sit-Coms.
I'll never understand the Whoopi gig, though.

The series is based on the documentary. True story.

I'm reluctant to watch since I've never cared for Danson, not even on Cheers.

#1 show on Netflix right now.
Michael Schur seems to reuse a lot of his stars from other shows. Danson and Eugene Cordero are from "The Good Place." Stephanie Beatriz and Marc Evan Jackson were from "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." Jackson was also on "Parks and Rec."

I thought that Ted Danson was wonderful in his small part in Body Heat. Do you remember when he was waiting for one of the other characters - probably William Hurt. Anyway - he was alone and practiced a dance routine. Really an odd but human touch .

Mickey Rourke was great as the arsonist too. 40+ years later, Danson still looks good.

Sally Struthers had gotten pretty heavy, but she looks quite svelte on this. Good for her for losing so much weight.

I bawled all day and watched the whole thing. It felt much heavier than comedy to me. Maybe that's mostly because of my aging parent and also my own isolation as someone with disabilities trying to figure out how to be ok with being alone when you're too broke to move into a place like this. Perhaps other folks will feel more of the joy of it but fuck I'm exhausted.

I just finished it last night. As someone mentioned above [r8], my first thought was, "This feels like an episode of Monk" (not a bad thing).
The grandsons are funny, typical teenage louts!
Overall, I really liked it. They explore issues that the elderly encounter but in a heartfelt way.

Just finished the whole series. I wonder what they're planning for next season (if there is one).
What I appreciated about this show was that -- for a comedy, they didn't shy away from tackling some really serious issues.
And one more Schur repeat casting: She only had a couple of lines, but D'Arcy Carden, from "The Good Place" showed up in the last episode.
Did anyone catch the crazy names of some of the characters?

and my personal favorite: Matteo Torte Al Formaggio Fabbrica (translated: "Matthew Cheesecake Factory." )

I despise Ted Manson. He's a bad one-note actor who has had, what, 60 series thrown at him. He's like flies on shit, inescapable and a very bad sign

My mom recently moved into a nice senior living center in San Francisco, so I can relate to this. The show gets a lot right about these centers. The only things I've noticed that are missing is that residents at my mom's place wear their key cards on a lanyard around their necks (and are all given emergency-alert wristbands), and there aren't nearly enough residents in wheelchairs or using walkers or scooters. (Yes, I realize it's not a documentary. The exteriors are the Mark Hopkins Hotel on Nob Hill, and I'm pretty sure you can't see the Golden Gate Bridge from its [imaginary] roof deck.) It took me forEVER to place Susan Ruttan.

I also thought it was charming. The setting was certainly the Arconia of Nursing Homes.
I laughed out loud at the Complaints Meeting, when the guy piped up "The food tastes like pennies and none of us can move our arms", and without a word the person next to him hit the alarm button round his neck and nurses came and took him away as the meeting continued.

My mom's biggest complaint at her senior living center is the food, which is very hit or miss, so that pennies line rang true. Fortunately, my mom still likes to cook and makes most of her meals. We'll find out tomorrow how they handle the Thanksgiving feed, though.
