The Gladiator II star, who said he has been sober for 10 years, revealed he is now focused on getting stronger after Lenny Kravitz hooked him up with a trainer
Two bottles a day and a 10,000 bottle wine cellar: Denzel Washington opens up about his past drinking problem

There’s a Korean stereotype of 65 year old women going from eternally young to Ed Asner overnight.
Our american version has men of color going from Denzel to Scatman Crothers.
I wonder if there was some long covid involved.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | November 22, 2024 3:35 AM |
My guess is that it's his weight loss that makes him look so aged. He's nearly 70, after all, and extra weight can hide wrinkles.

Wealthy people cover up their alcoholism by being "wine connoisseurs." I know a well-off couple (gay men) who have a shitload of wine. The both just look like alcoholics, to me.
Denzel does look older, but he still looks better, IMO. More clear-eyed.

That’s what I was downing before I got sober, R32.
It was more than too much. It was fucking AWFUL.
Anyone who’s drinking 2 bottles of wine every night has an unhealthy relationship with alcohol. It’s just as bad as vodka, scotch, or any type of booze.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | November 22, 2024 4:18 PM |

Are you out of your mind?
by Anonymous | reply 43 | November 22, 2024 5:50 PM |
That’s only 8% ABV so it’s probably less than a liter of whiskey - that’s three good drinks per night. Perhaps if they were spaced….that may work with delusional alcoholics, but medium and late stage drunks don’t space our drinks unless we can have a free gulp in between.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | November 22, 2024 6:03 PM |
Two bottles of wine is twelve glasses. Each glass of wine is a serving of alcohol. There’s no point in translating it to a volume of whiskey.
12 drinks a night, every night, is a serious problem.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | November 22, 2024 6:07 PM |
He looks like a befuddled beaver in that picture.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | November 22, 2024 6:12 PM |
Two bottles of wine a night is closer to eight drinks, R45. I don’t think Denzel gets those monstrous gallon jugs at Costco like you do.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | November 22, 2024 7:01 PM |
Denzel has talked about his alcoholism before and there have always been rumors on celebs site including here. Why yall acting brand new? Someone can still be beautiful, smart, charming, a great actor and be an alcoholic. I cannot wait until boomers die because they truly see being an addict as a character flaw even the ones that are addicts. You can’t change that. They been brainwashed. Addiction is a disease. Just say no the first time.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | November 22, 2024 7:11 PM |
Exactly, r47. Four glasses in a bottle. Spread out over the course of a day, eight glasses of wine, while excessive and certainly consumed to stay feeling buzzed, is not a falling down drunk amount. The health risks that can occur from drinking so much -- high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar, gastric upset, and increased risk of cancer are far more dangerous than just being drunk. Plus the weight gain and dehydration make you look like shit.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | November 22, 2024 7:12 PM |
Denzel's rampant alcohol abuse gave his film performances an extra level of gravitas and emotional heft. It's like when you think someone is interesting or special, only to later find out they are an addict and/or mentally ill. It's a type of je ne sais quois... albeit hardly magical.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | November 22, 2024 7:18 PM |
r50 Quoi... not quois.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | November 22, 2024 7:20 PM |
yeah...8 glasses of wine is not a big deal
by Anonymous | reply 52 | November 22, 2024 7:21 PM |
According to the CDC, a serving of wine is 5 ounces, so there are 5 servings per bottle. Ten drinks a night is a big deal.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | November 22, 2024 7:44 PM |
What kind of large ass glasses are y'all drinking on? Usually its 5/6 glasses of wine per bottle. And one bottle a day on, say, a Saturday or Sunday, is one thing, especially when spread out throughout the day. But Denzel was saying 2 bottles and every day.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | November 22, 2024 7:45 PM |
I've always felt the 750ml size for 1 bottle of wine was just a smidge too little. It should be 1L - that's a perfect amount, particularly if you're splitting at dinner.
But often you have 1 bottle of wine, split it at dinner and want just a little more - but not enough to buy a whole other bottle of wine. I believe it's intentional.
Some of you people are lightweights - for a 6ft+ 200 lb man, a bottle of wine is not THAT much.
2 bottles EVERY night? I can see mistakingly doing that partying with friends and not keeping track like once or twice a year.
But once you're past 45, that's just unthinkable to do an a regular basis - particularly every night. It makes me wince and get sick just thinking about it.
I can drink a whole bottle of wine on a Saturday night - but I usually do the 0 sugar and 9% (low alcohol) wine. Most wines are 12-13%.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | November 22, 2024 8:08 PM |
Where do you buy zero sugar wine? Any good? I like white wine
by Anonymous | reply 56 | November 22, 2024 9:00 PM |
I was a caregiver for six excruciating months for members of a few golf clubs..
Everyone was over 70. Two glasses of scotch at lunch, half a bottle of wine at dinner, and two large glasses of famous grouse at the end of the day was part of the day.
They did very well alcoholically.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | November 22, 2024 9:09 PM |
[quote] Some of you people are lightweights - for a 6ft+ 200 lb man, a bottle of wine is not THAT much.
It’s five drinks which for most people is a lot of alcohol. I don’t think the ability to drink a lot is anything to boast about, though I realize is some cultures, where early death is expected, it is boasted about.
Just smoke copious amounts of pot, silly.

Most people do not measure the amount of wine they pour in a glass.

In polite circles, it is generally is regarded as beneficial for the amount if alcohol poured to be less than the volume of the glass.

R56 - there are multiple brands. I like the Chateau Ste. Michelle. They have both a Sauv Blanc and a Chardonnay. 80 cal per glass, 0 sugar, 9% alcohol. I'm not a Chard drinker, but my friend has bought it and it's not bad. Obviously not a buttery sugar bomb like some people like it.
You can drink a whole bottle and feel fine the next day.
Kim Crawford also makes them - but they are higher priced. They have two kinds - the 85 and the 70 calorie. Of course, the 70 calorie has like 6 or 7% alcohol - which is just more than a regular beer.
Matua has one. There are like 10 different brands in my local grocery here in SoCal. There's also FitVine - which is a zero sugar wine, but it has 13% alcohol, which is on the higher end of wine alcohol.
The FitVine gets me fucked up - and not in a good way. The problem with wine sipping is that it can get carried away - but the lower alcohol and zero sugar wines help with that.

by Anonymous | reply 68 | November 23, 2024 12:25 AM |

R64 Didn't Will Smith also had and affair with Eva Mendez? Or was that a part of the entanglement?

R70 That was PR. Will Smith is a gay leaning bisexual and only likes domineering women. His oldest child’s mother was a beard.

Just saying.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | November 23, 2024 1:00 AM |
I'm more bothered by him paying $4K for single bottles of wine that he was downing twice a day. And by a wine merchant feeding this outrageously expensive daily wine habit. He could've bought a wine box and done some actual good with the savings while still getting blotto.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | November 23, 2024 1:36 AM |
[quote] Exactly, [R47]. Four glasses in a bottle.
No, that's FIVE glasses in a bottle, according to most websites.
So two bottles per day is ten glasses of wine per day.
That's a ridiculous amount of wine.

1-2 bottles when you're 21 to 30, on a weekend warrior basis, is different from 2 bottles per night.
If I dated someone and I saw him drinking 2 bottles, I would walk away.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | November 23, 2024 3:31 AM |
The key is that is was EVERY DAY supposedly. That's what he's admitting to - it was probably worse but his PR person settled on this amount.
After 30, wine is the drink of choice because somehow it has respectability above beer and spirits.
I could see it would be easier if you're drinking the REALLY GOOD wine - some of that shit is so lovely on the tongue.
But not every day. Twice a month? I could give that a pass.

It’s hysterical . This thread was about Denzel. Now it’s every dler talking justifying making jokes about his drinking or others.
I guess Denzel used to wear a rug. The bald head is very aging . Somehow his blinding white veneers, a little crooked, seem to accentuate his age, as they look so incongruent with the rest of his face.
He was great in the movie Flight. Good on him for stopping drinking. But I did hate him for his bragging — Lenny makes all his meals ???? Denzel could’ve omitted that
He poured out his heart in an embarrassing way - talking about how everyone was looking at him wen Spacy win the Oscar .

And speaking of suffering, Pauletta is one more of those spouses who chose to stay in the marriage, for whatever reasons she has.
But, somebody posted here many years ago who had worked a the set of one Washington’s movies that it was an open secret that Sanaa Latham and Washington were in the midst of a serious affair to the extent that he considered leaving Pauletta.
It wouldn’t surprise me to know that Latham may be a former heavy drinker, too when both were in the midst of their affair.
