I heard on Meet the Press the other day that they all have their own private bathrooms in their offices and that there are plenty of unisex bathrooms to use and they reported that an agreement had already been made.

As a woman, I wouldn't want McBride in a public bathroom with me because he's a man. He also looks like a big man, so in real-world situations his presence could be intimidating.

The issue is bigger than just McBride though. If he's allowed into women's bathrooms then all men who claim to be women will have to be allowed into women's bathrooms. Why not just let all men into women's bathrooms then, since only a minority of men are abusers? Or gay men at least, who aren't sexually interested in women.

Once upon a time there could indeed have been exceptions and compromises in individual cases, e.g. a man who had been fully operated on, no penis, had undergone several years of therapy and a rigorous process to get legal gender recognition. R118, my experience is that "masculine presenting transmen" in online photos are pretty obviously female in real life. If I encountered the woman in that photo in a women's loo in real life I personally would probably assume she's trans identified. Maybe some older, less versed women might, at first sight, question what she's doing in the women's loos but she could then explain that she's actually a biological female.

The real issue is how that trans-identified woman in the photo you link would be treated in a men's bathroom. But, then again, the issue is rarely about women wanting to use men's bathrooms and almost invariably about men wanting to use women's bathrooms. Because transmen don't use men's facilities so much because they know there is a physical risk from men, while transwomen have no concerns about barging into women's bathrooms because they have no intuition of how women feel physical risk from men - because they're not actually women themselves, they are men.

Also r116 and r86, the fact that the only thing r86 - a man - thinks is intimidating behaviour for women from transmen/men is that they might check us out simply shows how he has no understanding of the physical vulnerability of women in relation to men. Men are more powerful than women. Transwomen are men. If you really don't think there's a physical difference between males - including transwomen - and females, then why not make all public restrooms gender neutral? Transmen are women (r86 seems to think they're all lesbians) so are unlikely to check women out in an overt and intimidating way, especially in the loos.

By the way, I also check women out ocassionally, if I encounter a very attractive woman in public, but that's hardly done in an intimidatingly sexual way and I try not to make it apparent, because it's creepy for the other woman. That's the difference between men such as r86 and women.

And there is zero threat of violence. In a couple of the video rants, she mentions "men invading women's spaces", but the videos I saw she doesn't mention any specific dangers. The whole thing is dumb on her part given that McBride served in state level politics at the Delaware General Assembly and was using the women's bathrooms there and also McBride interned and worked at the White House years ago. McBride has been using state and federal facility bathrooms for a long time.

I don't live in a swing state or watch sports, so I missed out on the anti-trans ads that the GOP spent millions on. Were they really about bathroom use - something that was demonstrated to be a non-issue by elections in North Carolina years ago?

I thought the focus was on tax dollars going to re-assignment surgery for incarcerated immigrants.

I live in New Mexico and saw the anti-trans ads for awhile. But, the week before the election they stopped airing in my area.

I'm female and used the men's room at Wrigley Field. A lot of older stadiums have fewer women's restrooms. The line was massive. It's not that I was dying to go, but I'm too impatient so I scooted into the men's room (which had no line at all) and straight into a stall. I wasn't fearful at all except for maybe embarrassment. My plan for a confrontation was "sorry, I really had to go," run and disappear into the crowd.

Nobidy said anything to me and I didn't overhear anything. While I washed my hands I looked a little in the mirror for reactions, but didn't notice any. Then I scooted right out. A couple of guys had a surprised look as tge were walking in, but nothing hostile. They'd probably brought a wfe or SO to a game and knew the bathroom situation.

This was '99 or so.

R134 YouTube has lots of videos by Europeans sharing what surprised them when visiting the U.S. The women all mention their alarm at the narrow open spaces on the sides of bathroom stall doors, as well as the large opening at the bottom. Clearly they are accustomed to more privacy.
