Timmy Chalamet gives a “Tour de Force” performance in “A Complete Unknown”
by Anonymous | reply 312 | December 17, 2024 4:45 AM |
It seems like Chalamet is good but the supporting actors are better.
Best Actor is widely expected to go to Adrien Brody for The Brutalist.

Listen. The 2022 critics' reviews of, their descriptive adjectives for, Austin Butler as Elvis would, in retrospect, astound you in light of his not winning the Academy Award.
In fact, "astonishing" was one of their words, along with (all legit sources, not SM): bravura performance; captivating; dazzling; electrifying; fantastic; grit and grace; hypnotizing stage presence; The King Incarnate; jaw-dropping; magnetic; nails it; Oscar-worthy; phenomenal; a revelation; stunning, sexy, spectacular, sublime, sensational; transformative; unforgettable. UNDENIABLE.
Yet denied he was of the Oscar, after winning the GG and BAFTA.
So I, as a Butler fan, don't want to read about how terrific Timmy (or, frankly, anyone else) is in his role as another music icon where the actor doesn't even have to look any different from his normal self (but for a tiny change to his nose). And Austin sang for real, also.
Not that I want to have some silly "fan war," but where are all the cries NOW of "there have been too many music biopics already!"? No, instead NOW we are going full-steam ahead to praise "A Complete Unknown" and, soon, "Maria."

1. He seized for himself an entire restroom trailer which caused massive lines of 150 crew members.
2. He flew into a rage when a low level production assistant accidentally included him in a photo’s frame.
3. He told everyone to not look him in the eye or introduce themselves to him.
4. He hates when production assistants and stand ins would watch rehearsals on A Complete Unknown.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | November 21, 2024 3:19 PM |
Every single entertainment outlet is essentially a surrogate for his PR. They’ve always been in the tank for him. Just watch that trailer again.

While the reactions to “A Complete Unknown” have been mostly positive so far, the biopic received some mixed responses, including from Los Angeles film critic Ryan Swen, who described the movie as “frequently incoherent/inaccurate” and “not terrible but often unsuccessful.”
by Anonymous | reply 20 | November 21, 2024 4:01 PM |
He has a lot of things going for him: goodwill from Dune 2, Searchlight is one of the best campaigners in the business, he loves to campaign his ass off, the Academy loves biopics, etc. However, being a film's sole nomination is hard for any actor. I remember he was the sole nomination for Beautiful Boy and got in everywhere except the Oscars. Furthermore, other dark horse contenders (Craig, Stan, Eisenberg) can rise in the polls and ACU's reviews and box office will heavily factor. Basically, I won't be shocked if he gets in and I won't be shocked if he gets snubbed.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | November 21, 2024 4:01 PM |
It will be Ralph Fiennes for Conclave or Colman Domingo for Sing Sing. Timmy may get a nomination through spending but he won’t win.

by Anonymous | reply 38 | November 23, 2024 9:06 AM |
Timmy would have to have a truly bravura performance to get a win this early in his career.
They'll make him wait like they did with Leo.
It's a weird year for the Oscars...there are frontrunners for noms but there's really not solid sure things for probable wins like so many recent years.
Best Actor is probably Brody, Fiennes, Domingo. The other two spots seem to be pretty open with Timmy likely to get in there.
But, how many people have actually seen this movie? It smells like publicists working overtime again.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | November 23, 2024 9:38 AM |
He’s never going to win an Oscar.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | November 23, 2024 11:16 AM |
Even with a very weak Best Actor category this year, there are still more deserving performances than cheap Bob Dylan.
Brody and Fiennes are the only locks. It seemed like the buzz for Sing Sing died after the summer but Colman Domingo is on fire right now and A24 is one of the best campaigners in the industry. I think he’s a lock for the third slot.
I hope Eisenberg and Stan get the fourth and fifth slots. A golden globe win should help Eisenberg and I think the Actors on Actors controversy might actually backfire and galvanize support for Stan. I wouldn’t even mind seeing Craig get in for his first overdue nomination.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | November 24, 2024 1:32 AM |
This years Best Actor isn’t weak at all. There are tons of performances in the race. Supporting Actress is weak this year.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | November 24, 2024 1:44 AM |
Yeah I think Zoe Saldana is winning Best Supporting Actress and it will be one of the most egregious examples of category fraud. Granted she is miles better than Gomez and the sex changed lead.

He's odd looking and will age into character actor face by the time he's 40.
Also: not that great an actor.
He's had 3 big hits: Dune 1 and 2 and the Wonka thing. All tentpole type movies based on long established IP. His presence didn't make them huge hits.

by Anonymous | reply 71 | November 27, 2024 8:24 PM |
I think it will depend on how honest the critics are going to be. The box office will factor as well. I don’t want to prematurely declare it a flop as some have suggested but I don’t think it’s going to get Bohemian Rhapsody or Elvis numbers.

This is an important movie for TimOtay....a test for him and his career. After the huge success of him starring in big tentpole movies it will prove if he can carry a movie on his own without the help of pre-existing major intellectual properties (though I guess you could argue that 'Dylan' is an intellectual property, he's not quite the same as Willie Wonka and Dune...)
If it's a big hit, TimTim is officially a big Box Office Leading Man Star with the pick of scripts and major pull in H'wood.
If it's just an Art House Hit...well, then it's a minor win for him. He's been in several of these...it'll just establish him as a Star who can lead in big properties and arty fare. Not a bad place to be.
It it barely breaks even or just bombs...not so good. He's just the weird looking aging kid who does well if it's a well known property with a role he's suited for. He needs to start mooching around for a good Marvel role.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | November 28, 2024 8:48 PM |
He can't hide behind IPs forever.
Dylan's style is polarizing but I agree you can make the claim that there is some intellectual property aspect there.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | November 28, 2024 9:09 PM |
He's had a year of bad press between the diva hit piece that dropped this summer and all things Kartrashian. We'll see if any of that will impact ACU at the box office. I think a true testament to his "star power" will be if he gets in as the sole nomination for ACU. That's hard to do for an actor of any stature and it will be even harder if ACU gets sort of middling reviews.

Both "Wonka" and "Dune: Part 2" are associated with prior popular films, with the latter especially having a ready fan base from the books, much like "Game of Thrones." Hence, Timothée could "carry" each of his abovementioned.
But "A Complete Unknown" is not a movie being clamored for (is it??). There are likely no obsessives just waiting to see a tiny detail depicted "incorrectly." Nobody is hankering to buy a Bob Dylan Action Figurine. Sure, we old Boomers will probably go see the movie out of nostalgia, but maybe not so many in these post-Election days of Liberalism rejected. ("The Times, They Are A-Changin'," for sure.)
Oscar? I predict Fiennes.

According to the latest GoldDerby video, Chalamet is better than the movie. Again, Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen (both annoying) said the same thing about Austin Butler. While they couldn't say much because there's an embargo in place until December 10th, the musical numbers are apparently better than the dialogue scenes and supposedly there's a song every two minutes in the film.

R109, Because it's a musical biopic, a genre that has long been known as being both incredibly formulaic and a great showcase for actors. "Great lead performance, the movie's only okay" has been the standard line on even the most acclaimed biopics from the past twenty years or so.
The critical consensus for A Complete Unknown is entirely predictable.

Chalamet is 28 and about to hit a wall in looks and age. He's been nearing that wall for about two years. I'm saying he has been losing his striking looks of his twink years.
Who knows if his face will go through the next 5-7 years and come back mature and handsome as a man.
I see little evidence that he will transform into a stunning looking mature male actor. He's by no means ugly, but he's not exceptional looking at the moment.

R161 what other actors besides Timmay and Brody are considered possible nominees for the GG or the Oscar? They would seem to be the front runners.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | December 4, 2024 9:08 PM |
Brody’s win reignites his Oscar prospects surrounding his performance in Corbet’s historical epic, which has already been described as a towering achievement. The actor, who made history in 2002 as the youngest-ever best actor Oscar winner for “The Pianist” at age 29, could now become the youngest two-time winner at 51. However, he faces stiff competition from a strong field that includes Timothée Chalamet in “A Complete Unknown,” Ralph Fiennes in “Conclave” and Colman Domingo in “Sing Sing,” who beat Brody at the Gothams on Monday. -VARIETY

Chalamet has that big-screen conventional, commercial appeal.
That's apparent because it's just factual that both the Dune movies and that ridiculous, oh so stupid, yet appealing "Wonka" movie were financial hits.
I've argued that he has to make his movie star career now because his particular, unique facial features aren't going to age well.
Still, he has to carry "A Complete Unknown". It'll be interesting to see what the box office will be on it, or, if it's one of the "prestige" releases where Oscar and GG noms will happen even if the movie isn't a big hit.

While I don't go that far, still, I never "got" Bob Dylan. Part of that is because R&B is first in my heart.
Still, once I matured and really took-in the words to "Like a Rolling Stone", I do appreciate his talent.
His observations in LARS are nothing new or original. He's just another human indulging in Schadenfreude, the essence of that song.
Yet, his tone in LARS is so personal and bitter, the images he paints with his words so evocative, I can't deny LARS is compelling.
But the rest of his catalogue, to me, is "meh".

I know, r257. That wasn't my point.
NS, S, r259.
R262, One might wonder what the non-cartoonified original looks like.

When will this mediocre film be released and how much money do you think it will make? My guess - $64 million.

With a not so good film on his hands, look for the meme actor to trot out the reality star just to get some publicity that is not talking about the bad biopic. Timothée Chalamet/Bob Dylan Biopic “A Completely Unknown”/Kylie Jenner (Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet Spotted on Rare Public Date Night at A Complete Unknown Premiere)

Try again grandpa ^
by Anonymous | reply 267 | December 13, 2024 12:47 AM |
It sounds like Timothee's Iron Lady. IOW, he's great, the movie is not. It definitely doesn't have any buzz, but why would a standard bio film on Bob Dylan (who is not a pleasant singer or person) have any mainstream power?

GO TIMMY

R266: I guess he said no to more red carpets after the Golden Globes fiasco.
by Anonymous | reply 270 | December 13, 2024 2:59 AM |
That's a very flat and scrawny ass R261. Completely unfuckable.
by Anonymous | reply 271 | December 13, 2024 3:22 AM |
Let us know when he wins something, r269.
by Anonymous | reply 272 | December 13, 2024 3:31 AM |
Oh, and r269? Check your signature. 😉

R268 Dylan had a way with words and wrote lyrics that other songwriters can only dream of.

TV alert: TC is on Colbert’s show tonight.
by Anonymous | reply 275 | December 13, 2024 4:27 AM |
I was going to go to bed but I'll stay up to watch. I've never seen him interviewed.

R271: The whole package is completely unfuckable.

Facial hair and an orange scarf.

R278: Sunglasses too.
by Anonymous | reply 279 | December 13, 2024 5:06 AM |
Rat moustache. How fitting.
by Anonymous | reply 280 | December 13, 2024 5:07 AM |
He butchered it Takes a Lot to Laugh It Takes a Train to Cry in that clip. One of my favorite songs, Tim don't do that again.
by Anonymous | reply 281 | December 13, 2024 5:10 AM |
He's nervous, observe the bouncing leg.
by Anonymous | reply 282 | December 13, 2024 5:13 AM |
R282: Because he knows his movie is a total dud and that his and Norton's performances are not all they're cracked up to be.
by Anonymous | reply 283 | December 13, 2024 5:16 AM |
He seems like an amiable person.
by Anonymous | reply 284 | December 13, 2024 5:19 AM |
I like him. Seems like a nice kid.
by Anonymous | reply 285 | December 13, 2024 5:21 AM |
I like him more because he enrages the pathetic losers of DL
by Anonymous | reply 286 | December 13, 2024 5:45 AM |
Starting to see the occasional clip and still from this movie. The make up and costumes make him look hilarious. God this is gonna be a great movie, but for the wrong reasons.
by Anonymous | reply 287 | December 13, 2024 6:51 AM |
R285, He's likeable enough.
by Anonymous | reply 288 | December 13, 2024 7:44 AM |
R274 and r268, Dylan had an extraordinary "Met the Moment" life. He passionately embraced the 60s Zeitgeist and sired songs of social protest, of love and longing, of the Changing of the Generational Guard embodied by JFK, and more.
Older than a Baby Boomer, Bob Dylan spoke to us. Seemed to "get" us. So he became our troubadour, whether he liked or admitted it or not (to Ed Bradley, he denied it).
I had the famous psychedelic rainbow poster of Dylan tacked on my bedroom ceiling when I was a teen. In my early 20s I played "If Not For You" constantly.
Now in my 70s, I will go to see this movie for the memories, but I loved "Elvis" too much to hope Timothée is Oscar-worthy!

When do they announce next year's Oscar nominees?
by Anonymous | reply 290 | December 13, 2024 11:55 AM |
R290: January 17th. Interesting discussion about his “presidential” campaign to get an Oscar.
by Anonymous | reply 291 | December 13, 2024 12:55 PM |
Watched him on Colbert and then GMA this morning. He comes across well. Patient with the same questions. He always seems nervous. Never gets any personal questions not related to the movie. Someone asked his ex, Lily Rose Depp, about him and she offered high praise for his acting. Course no one would ask him about her or Kylie or ask why Hammer unfollowed him after 8 years. His leg would probably bounce through the ceiling!
by Anonymous | reply 292 | December 13, 2024 2:00 PM |
His PR approves the questions that will be asked ahead of time. He’s never really confirmed or denied any relationship: Lily, Kylie, Eiza. He can’t avoid personal questions forever. Personally, I don’t even care about the Hammer unfollow. His PR still sells the artsy, sophisticated facade to the fandom despite all things Kartrashian.
by Anonymous | reply 293 | December 13, 2024 3:22 PM |
The campaign is very strong. Norton and Fanning have been equally pushing it.
by Anonymous | reply 294 | December 13, 2024 4:48 PM |
What campaign? No one cares. The rat looks very unappealing with short hair and a moustache. He's lost his luster, which as we know was primarily his long hair and the unique spelling of Timothy.
by Anonymous | reply 295 | December 13, 2024 6:01 PM |
Barbaro is supposed to be very good in this, as Joan Baez. I'm hoping if this film does well, she gets a "spin off" of her own telling Joan's story. I'd rather pay to see that than a biopic on sourpuss Bob D.

You’re so sweet and naive r295
Timmy will be tormenting your sick mind for decades
You are bringing this on yourself. A normal person wouldn’t harbor this intense hatred and jealousy for an actor who didn’t know. Have you tried meditation or a mood stabilizer drugs?
by Anonymous | reply 297 | December 13, 2024 6:16 PM |
Bad hirsute days abound. Austin got a close buzzcut, Barry Keoghan has gone ice-blond, and Timmy's 'stache looks like some Victorian stage-villain.
by Anonymous | reply 299 | December 13, 2024 7:42 PM |
Timmy mustache is for a role r299
by Anonymous | reply 300 | December 13, 2024 7:48 PM |
R299 He still looks better than Joe Locke.

R302 Brick her mouth up immediately.

Americans under 50 do not know Bob Dylan. And Dylan must be below zero interest to young people all over the world. He's more than a complete unknown. He's a do not care.
by Anonymous | reply 304 | December 15, 2024 10:54 AM |
Were Americans under 50 familiar with Elvis or interested in him? Wasn't that film with Austin Butler a BO hit? A complete unknown might be relying on Timmy's popularity that it will bring in the crowd that made Dune and Wonka hits. But speaking of do not care that's how I would describe the movie Maria. Is anyone going to see this boring, formulaic and cliched film? I tried watching it on Netflix and I lost interest quickly
by Anonymous | reply 305 | December 15, 2024 4:56 PM |
It’s a complete unknown as to whether this film will be a hit. I’ve heard informally that tracking is weak.
by Anonymous | reply 306 | December 15, 2024 4:59 PM |
R301, So?
by Anonymous | reply 307 | December 15, 2024 10:14 PM |
R305, Elvis, like Marilyn Monroe, is a member of the Cultural Pantheon.
by Anonymous | reply 308 | December 15, 2024 10:17 PM |
TMZ got him and Kylie at the premiere for the movie. They’re still together
by Anonymous | reply 309 | December 16, 2024 4:21 PM |
R306: Tracking may be weak but that hasn’t stopped Searchlight from giving it a Barbie, Dune 2, Wicked-esque campaign. It seems like there’s a new profile piece or premiere everyday.

Of course, r399. It's Red Carpet/Premiere/ Awards/Jenner/Gerber/Hadid/Hetero Season.
