Denzel Washington Says There Were Rumors About Kevin Spacey Decades Ago: 'That's Between Him and God'

Washington reflected on watching Spacey win an Oscar in 2000 for his performance in 'American Beauty' in a new essay for 'Esquire'

Denzel Washington says many people in Hollywood had suspicions about Kevin Spacey decades before the House of Cards actor faced allegations of sexual assault and harassment.

On Nov. 19, Esquire published a five-part, first-person essay written by Washington, 69, in which the two-time Oscar winner remembered moments in his life and career ahead of the release of Gladiator II. While Washington reflected on attending the 2000 Academy Awards — at which he was nominated for Best Actor for his performance in The Hurricane — the actor recalled watching Spacey, 65, win that year's award instead.

"I’m sure I went home and drank that night. I had to," Washington, who also wrote much about his decision to live a sober lifestyle over the last ten years, wrote in the piece. "I don’t want to sound like, Oh, he won my Oscar, or anything like that. It wasn’t like that."

"And you know, there was talk in the town about what was going on over there on that side of the street, and that’s between him and God," he added. "I ain’t got nothing to do with that. I pray for him. That’s between him and his maker."

Spacey won that year's Best Actor Oscar for his role in 1999's American Beauty; it marked his second Academy Award win after he won Best Supporting Actor in 1996 for the crime thriller The Usual Suspects. 17 years after Spacey won that second Oscar, the actor's career unraveled when Anthony Rapp became the first person to publicly accuse him of sexual assault, with several more accusers coming forward in the years that followed.

In 2022, a jury in New York found that Spacey was not liable for battery in relation to Rapp’s accusations; the following year, a U.K. court found him not guilty of nine counts of alleged sexual assault, with additional initial charges in the case struck as well.

Allegations against Spacey have continued to amass in documentaries like Investigation Discovery's Spacey Unmasked, released in May. Spacey, who has denied all claims made against him — and received criticism for coming out as gay in response to Rapp's initial accusations in 2017 — said in a June interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored that he is struggling to pay his legal bills and that his home in Baltimore was being foreclosed on as a result of the criminal prosecution against him and other lawsuits.

Washington's new movie Gladiator II releases in theaters Nov. 22.

Denzel has received Oscar nominations across 6 decades. That's quite something.

by Anonymousreply 1November 20, 2024 8:28 PM

What if he doesn’t believe in a “maker?”

by Anonymousreply 2November 20, 2024 9:29 PM

Has Kevin Spacey vacated his Bal’mer property yet?

by Anonymousreply 3November 20, 2024 10:45 PM

We been knew

by Anonymousreply 4November 20, 2024 10:47 PM

American Beauty won every top prize except Best Actress. These were the days when the BP winner was always a big hit. Spacey benefited from this.

Washington did win at the Globes.

by Anonymousreply 5November 20, 2024 10:55 PM

Denzel been running that mouth a lot lately. He on his Quincy Jones shit.

by Anonymousreply 6November 20, 2024 11:16 PM

What I want to know is did Diane know?

by Anonymousreply 7November 20, 2024 11:17 PM

In retrospect Spacey’s performance seems less brilliant because he was essentially playing a straight version of himself 😂.

by Anonymousreply 8November 20, 2024 11:20 PM

It’s between him and God but then Washington goes on and on-maybe Denzel is God? He used to be a God…

by Anonymousreply 9November 20, 2024 11:46 PM

I want nothing to do with Kevin Spacey.

by Anonymousreply 10November 20, 2024 11:50 PM

R9 No he’s pointing out the hypocrisy of Hollywood. Notice that with someone like puffy mad people are tryna indict every black personal in the industry. You bitches here do it. What about Kevin Stacey’s friends. What about Harvey Weinstein’s friends. You don’t even hear it. The coverups and those associations with their peers. Because complexion for the protection. But with blacks they all guilty. That’s why Trump won.

by Anonymousreply 11November 20, 2024 11:52 PM

Mafukin' Denzel Washinton done did talk bout dat Spacey man

by Anonymousreply 12November 21, 2024 1:40 AM

[quote] What if he doesn’t believe in a “maker?”

That, too, is between him and his Maker.

by Anonymousreply 13November 21, 2024 2:19 AM

A broken clock is right twice a day. Congratulations, r11.

by Anonymousreply 14November 21, 2024 2:20 AM

Didn’t Spacey move on over to team trump now that he’s officially a sex offender- it is a prerequisite you know.

by Anonymousreply 15November 21, 2024 2:23 AM

[quote] American Beauty won every top prize except Best Actress.

A grave oversight. Not even Bening's finest performance but I would not have guessed she'd still be Oscar-less 25 years later. After Glenn, she is the Academy's biggest embarassment.

by Anonymousreply 16November 21, 2024 2:24 AM

r16 who beat her?

by Anonymousreply 17November 21, 2024 2:42 AM

"I am just another entitled, pompous asshole of limited talent with nothing of value to say."

by Anonymousreply 18November 21, 2024 2:42 AM

R17, you know who, gurl!!!

by Anonymousreply 19November 21, 2024 2:44 AM

Even in print, Denzel bores me so.

by Anonymousreply 20November 21, 2024 3:34 AM

There was no way Bening was winning over Swank that year.

by Anonymousreply 21November 21, 2024 3:59 AM

Ooo Boys Don’t Cry. Nah she wasn’t better than Hillary Swank in that.

by Anonymousreply 22November 21, 2024 4:05 AM

I thought that movie (and everyone's performance) was so overrated. No wonder Denzel drank that night.

by Anonymousreply 23November 21, 2024 5:19 AM

Hillary Swank should be stripped of her Oscar for transphobia and Elliot Page should be digitally created in the role instead.

by Anonymousreply 24November 21, 2024 9:09 AM

No love for Spacey here, but gawd Denzel sounds insufferable.

by Anonymousreply 25November 21, 2024 10:38 AM

R21 Bening won at SAG. I picked Swank to win, but there was a big chance Bening could take the Oscar too. Considering how AB cleaned up in the top awards that year. To say no way isn’t accurate. The film has aged like shit. In retrospect Bening deserved to win and not Spacey.

R25 true. Washington knows how the Oscars work. It’s timing and luck. He goes on to say they didn’t appreciate him and let his wife fill out the annual ballot. Fuck man you already won once. He did some of his best work in the 90s, but doesn’t bitch about losing to Pacinos career award. Glenn Close is really not appreciated going home 8 times empty handed. My heart doesn’t bleed for you Denzel.

by Anonymousreply 26November 22, 2024 9:00 PM

R26 -

He has won 2 Oscars: Supporting (Glory Days) and Best (Training Days)

He should have won for Malcolm X

by Anonymousreply 27November 23, 2024 6:16 PM

Denzel is a homophobic asshole.

by Anonymousreply 28November 23, 2024 11:40 PM

R27 he had won once at the time he lost to Spacey.

by Anonymousreply 29November 28, 2024 6:18 PM

All this talk about God. What does his Maker think of Denzel's notorious womanizing? The man has spent decades cheating on his wife.

by Anonymousreply 30November 28, 2024 6:26 PM

Denzel& Spacy are both predator assholes!!

by Anonymousreply 31November 28, 2024 6:52 PM

I don’t know her.

by Anonymousreply 32November 28, 2024 6:53 PM

R28 Any receipts? Did he drop F bombs around his children like Matt Damon?

by Anonymousreply 33November 29, 2024 10:44 PM

R31 why bring feminism back 50 years?

by Anonymousreply 34November 29, 2024 10:44 PM

R27 Glory and Training Day

by Anonymousreply 35November 30, 2024 12:41 AM

He was never going to win the year in question, brilliant as he was in The Hurricane. That year was ALL about American Beauty. I'm surprised he's surprised he lost.

He also should not have won for Glory or Training Day. I bet he'd love to hear someone say that to his face.

That said, I do think in most other years he'd have deservedly won for The Hurricane, and he should have won for Malcolm X too, but that was the year of Al Pacino finally getting his due.

So much of this stuff depends on luck and timing.

by Anonymousreply 36November 30, 2024 1:27 AM

R36 Perhaps he thought maybe the Academy wanted to mend itself of its 30 year streak and award him the Oscar rather than the guy they knew were groping their teenage sons once they left the room to get coffee lol.

Everyone knows about your side of the street, Denzel. In fact, you used to be pretty good at taking it bareback a few streets down from the piers in New York around 1983 ;)

by Anonymousreply 39November 30, 2024 8:02 AM

R39 Please spill the tea if you aren’t lying. Was he on drugs back then?

by Anonymousreply 40November 30, 2024 9:19 AM

When Denzel Washington won the Oscar for Training Day, that was not supposed to happen, as Russell Crowe was winning all of the post Oscar awards for Best Actor (BAFTA, SAG, Golden Globe & Critic's Choice) for A Beautiful Mind. Two things happened during voting: RC was being quite obnoxious (being a prickly a-hole during interviews, and when he won at the SAG awards, he was going to read a poem, but he was cut off. He angrily threatened a crew member backstage afterward) and during an interview, Julia Roberts, who had won Best Actress the year before and had shot the Pelican Brief with DW, spoke glowingly about working with him and how he was such an excellent act and it was a shame that he had been nominated more than once and had yet to win a Best Actor statue.

On Oscar night 2002, A Beautiful Mind won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress.

by Anonymousreply 41November 30, 2024 7:35 PM

act - Actor

by Anonymousreply 42November 30, 2024 7:36 PM

R41. Also people have to remember the Oscars are so prestigious, it’s part legacy award. It’s hard to be nominated once for leading actor let alone 3 times in a single decade. Denzel was well liked and the Academy knew it was the year to break the 40 something gap between the last time a black male won. It’s funny because after Halle won, every black family was like well Denzel is going to be 0-3. And then he actually won.

by Anonymousreply 43November 30, 2024 7:39 PM

On the same night that Sidney Poitier was given a special Oscar.

Such a touching moment:

Wasn't that also the year Russell Crowe threw a phone at a bellboy? He totally fucked up his chances.

Just like Eddie Murphy a few years later for Dreamgirls.

by Anonymousreply 45November 30, 2024 7:54 PM

R45 I think that happened a few years after that Oscars. He hadn’t gone full cray cray yet.

by Anonymousreply 46November 30, 2024 7:56 PM

Russel Crowe had just won the previous year for Gladiator. It is very hard to win 2 consecutive years in a row.

by Anonymousreply 47November 30, 2024 7:58 PM

You are so right (*eye roll*)

by Anonymousreply 48December 1, 2024 4:48 AM

r48 Hard not impossible.

by Anonymousreply 49December 1, 2024 4:59 AM

I remember Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks, and others raving about his performance in Training Day. His Hollywood peers felt it was his time to win that year.

by Anonymousreply 50December 1, 2024 7:42 AM

[quote]Wasn't that also the year Russell Crowe threw a phone at a bellboy?

The YEAR? I do that every time I check into a hotel.
